| Name | Liang Dazhuang (梁大壮) |
| Gender | Male |
| Affiliation | Hu household; Minister’s Residence in Kang Capital 1 |
| Occupation/Role | Hu Xiaotian’s personal attendant; leads the servants assigned to accompany and protect him 1 16 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 1, “A Treacherous Minister’s Son (Part One)” 1 |
Background / History
Liang Dazhuang was assigned to attend Hu Xiaotian six months before his first appearance. His ability to read people and flatter his superiors helped him stand out among the Minister’s Residence servants and secure the position under Hu Buwei. He initially accompanies Xiaotian with three other servants; later, he leads a six-servant escort under orders to remain close to the young master whenever he leaves home 1 14 16.
Dazhuang and the other five personal servants live in side rooms flanking Xiaotian’s bedroom, allowing them to respond quickly to threats at night 26.
Appearance
Dazhuang is tall and stout, weighing nearly two hundred catties. His broad face and smiling expression are compared to an oversized meat bun 1 16.
- Eyes: Tiny, narrowing into slits when he smiles 1.
- Facial hair: A drooping mustache that tilts upward with his grin 1.
- Clothing: A blue servant’s robe and small cap 1.
- Temporary injuries: After the Tang family confrontation, he has a bruised nose, swollen face, crooked mouth, and askew eyes—the worst injuries among Xiaotian’s four attendants 12.
Personality
Despite his clumsy, foolish-looking exterior, Dazhuang is perceptive and socially shrewd. He notices Xiaotian’s displeasure over his arranged marriage and tactfully proposes an outing. His exaggerated praise is calculated to win favor, although he is equally susceptible to flattery himself: Xiaotian persuades him to stay behind at Camel Street by calling him his most trusted servant 1 14 30.
His loyalty has clear limits. He charges to defend Xiaotian and helps resist an attack on the residence, but armed opposition frightens him, and he resents being forced into potentially fatal danger. After Xiaotian’s abduction, he leads the servants in kneeling before their master largely because they fear punishment if anything happens to him 2 4 6 8 34.
Dazhuang also shares the household servants’ assumptions about class and propriety. He privately rejects Xiaotian’s declaration that everyone is born equal, believing birth determines whether someone becomes a master or servant. He mistakes Tang Qingxuan’s emergency treatment for sexual misconduct and later hopes to glimpse her undressed when ordered to bring her out 3 7 24.
Abilities & Skills
Social Perception and Flattery
Dazhuang’s strongest documented talents are reading moods and navigating household hierarchy 1 14.
- Recognizes when Xiaotian needs distraction rather than further discussion of his engagement 1.
- Uses elaborate declarations of admiration and lifelong loyalty to seek approval 14.
- Can misjudge his audience: Xiaotian sees through his attempt to portray forced exposure to danger as voluntary heroism 14.
Knowledge of Capital Affairs
Dazhuang is well informed about local figures and readily passes news to Xiaotian 4 18.
- Immediately identifies Tang Tiehan and warns Xiaotian about the approaching confrontation 4.
- Supplies household gossip and political news, including information about Wu Jingshan’s impeachment of Hu Buwei 18.
Protection and Crowd Coordination
Dazhuang can organize other servants and fight with ordinary weapons, but his performance depends heavily on numbers and circumstances 4 6 22.
- Leads servants in beating back men climbing the residence wall and helps topple their ladder 6.
- Joins the beating of the Qiu brothers and their scholarly allies at Misty Waters Pavilion 22.
- Raises an alarm loud enough to wake the entire Minister’s Residence during a burglary 26.
- Is swiftly disarmed and repeatedly kicked down by Murong Feiyan; the Camel Street abductor likewise knocks him and three servants down with a whip 7 31.
- Limitation: Cannot swim, leaving Xiaotian to rescue Tang Qingxuan himself 3.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Clubs: Used during the defense of the residence wall against the Tang family’s men 6.
- Saber/broadsword: Holds Tang Qingxuan at saberpoint and later carries a broadsword during the nighttime burglary 7 26.
- Li Yifeng’s brocade box: Temporarily entrusted to him by Xiaotian after the gift of surgical instruments 37 40.
Relationships
- Hu Xiaotian — Master and principal charge. Dazhuang alternates between protection, flattery, and private resentment; Xiaotian repeatedly uses him as a target for anger or as cover during danger 1 8 14 16.
- Hu Buwei — Employer who selected him as Xiaotian’s attendant and imposed strict escort duties on the servants 14 16.
- Hu An — Household steward who holds Dazhuang responsible for Xiaotian’s safety and orders him to follow the young master secretly to the literary gathering 17.
- Hu Fo — Fellow attendant who shares his alarm during the Tang confrontation and his misunderstanding of Qingxuan’s treatment 3 4.
- Tang Qingxuan — Opponent whom he holds hostage. She later kicks him on the head after Xiaotian pushes him into her path 7 8.
- Murong Feiyan — Constable who disarms him, frees Qingxuan, and defeats his attempt to intervene on Xiaotian’s behalf 7.

Misty Waters Pavilion
- Is kicked by Xiaotian even though Hu An—not Dazhuang—has voiced the objection to leaving home 16.
- Follows the party secretly with five servants and waits downstairs. Their presence allows them to join Xiaotian’s fight with the Qiu brothers 17 21 22.
- Helps rescue an elderly driver trapped beneath an overturned cart, calling on the others to push together 24.

- Leads the servants’ kneeling appeal after Xiaotian returns, hoping to discourage further trouble that could bring punishment upon them 34.
