Jiang Nian hadn't noticed anything unusual about Song Jici at all. She answered his call with a smile:
"What is it, Jici?"
Song Jici stared at the plate of food, and an utterly absurd suspicion suddenly came to him.
He looked back at the smiling Jiang Nian and asked, feigning casualness, "You still hate this dish that much? You can't eat even a little? Carrots and celery are good for you."
Jiang Nian pouted and shook her head. "No. They smell awful. I don't want any."
Song Jici's eyes darkened. More certain of his suspicion now, he fought back the urge to step forward and confront her.
"Since you're finished eating, how about I take you out for a bit? I've made a few new friends lately, and I haven't had a chance to introduce you."
Jiang Nian's eyes lit up at that, and she looked eager to go. "Of course! Let's go, Jici!"
Watching the excited Jiang Nian, Song Jici led her outside while discreetly picking up his phone to send the others a message.

Once they were in the car, he ignored Jiang Nian's attempts to chat and simply closed his eyes, pretending to sleep.

The car slowly came to a stop in front of a small villa standing amid a secluded stretch of woods on the outskirts.
