Background / History
Childhood with Jiang Nian
Song Jici and Jiang Nian grew up together because their parents were close friends and business partners. He frequently looked after her, including catching her when she fell from a tree and taking the blame for a vase she broke. He remembers her as a little shadow who followed him and sweetly called him her big brother—sometimes to obtain his last piece of candy 91.
At ten, he collected star-themed presents after noticing Jiang Nian’s interest in stars. He also chose a star-shaped ring, then moved it into their shared time capsule after watching a televised wedding. Accompanying it was a handwritten request that she marry him someday. They buried the capsule with the intention of opening it ten years later 130 131.
Kidnapping and trauma
At ten, Song Jici was kidnapped by people acting for one of his father’s business rivals. The abductors originally intended to use him as leverage against the Song Corporation, but became greedy and demanded an enormous ransom. He escaped using training he had previously received, only to encounter human traffickers in the wilderness 7 71.
Fu Zhenzhen protected him during his captivity and helped him escape. Unable to find her afterward, he spent six years fearing that she had died because of him. Reports of girls tortured by traffickers could leave him sleepless, and he repeatedly woke from nightmares. His parents viewed his reunion with Fu as a chance for him to finally escape that guilt 71.
Jiang Nian’s thoughts later suggested that Fu had directed the traffickers to him. He began investigating privately, but the elapsed time—and the fact that those involved were dead or imprisoned—made the inquiry difficult 3 71.
Personality
Song Jici is gentle, patient, and attentive, but his kindness has limits. Jiang Nian explicitly distinguishes him from the unquestioningly obedient male lead she remembers reading about: the person she knows has principles, maintains boundaries, and supports her without indulging everything she does 81.
His compassion also makes him vulnerable to guilt. He initially tolerates Fu Zhenzhen’s closeness because he believes she risked her life for him, wants to help an orphan, and hopes to resolve his own uncertainty about the kidnapping. He eventually rejects the idea that gratitude obliges him to overlook her attacks on Jiang Nian 5 71.
His affection for Jiang Nian combines instinctive protectiveness with playful rivalry. He catches her falling from a swing, quietly revives his childhood New Year gift ritual, and boasts about having kissed her cheek when his friends compete over their closeness to her 91 92 102.
Despite his devotion, he is insecure about whether Jiang Nian loves his present self or the previous-timeline Song Jici who sacrificed himself. In his side story, he resolves to pursue her as the person he is now rather than retreat because of that comparison 124 131.
Abilities & Skills
Hearing Jiang Nian’s Thoughts
Song Jici begins hearing Jiang Nian’s unspoken commentary during their reunion at Pluto Academy. He confirms with Wen Jincheng that the voice is not a hallucination, then compares experiences with all three of his closest friends 2 3.
- Learns about the roles and disastrous futures Jiang Nian associates with him and his friends 2 3.
- Uses her warnings to question Fu Zhenzhen’s account of his childhood rescue 3 71.
- Initially theorizes that the ability is connected to being one of the story’s main characters 3 49.
- The later explanation connects Mind Reading to Jiang Wang’s bargain with Vitality to help Jiang Nian survive; it is not presented as Song Jici’s independently acquired cultivation power 124.
Escape Training and Investigation
His preparations for emergencies allow him to escape his original kidnappers when their guard drops 71.
- In a repeated lifetime, changes his escape route and seeks help rather than encountering Fu Zhenzhen again 118.
- Works with his friends to collect evidence of Fu’s bullying and involvement in an orphanage death, securing her imprisonment in one cycle 118.

Memory Across Resets
During the illegal cycles, Song Jici retains memories of earlier lives and discovers that Tan Xuguang, Shen Hui, and Wen Jincheng do as well 117 118.
- Recognizes the kidnapping at age ten as the recurring reset point 117 118.
- Deduces that either Jiang Nian’s death or Fu Zhenzhen’s death can trigger a reset 118.
- In the last illegal cycle, cannot speak or write the truth about their previous lives to Jiang Nian 120.
- The Bureau-assisted final reset erases memories of the illegal cycles; these memories are not continuously available to his current-timeline self 122 123.
Bureau-Assisted Timeline Search
The Greater Worlds Administration Bureau enables Song Jici to enter the river of time and examine possible futures following another reset 122.
- Searches hundreds of millions of timelines for a future in which Jiang Nian survives 122.
- Briefly meets Jiang Nian in the snowy timeline later shown at the fountain 79 80 122 123.
- Cannot freely repeat the solution: the offered reset is a single opportunity requiring the destruction of his soul 122.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Reunion at Pluto Academy
Song Jici’s first reunion with Jiang Nian involves helping her out of the academy pool, lending her his jacket, and hearing her prediction that he will eventually send her to prison for Fu Zhenzhen. He and his friends use their group chat to establish that they can all hear her thoughts; he dissolves the chat after their investigation turns into teasing him about his supposed future 2 3.
He remains seated beside Jiang Nian despite Fu’s request that he move, accompanies her to the infirmary, and brings her home. He also invites Fu, partly to learn more about her connection to the kidnapping 5 7.
Breaking with Fu Zhenzhen
- Military training: Rejects romantic insinuations about himself and Fu, then publicly denies rumors linking him to Jiang Nian while defending her from gossip 13 19.
- Shen family banquet: Stops Jiang Wenxue from slapping Jiang Nian during the attempt to discredit her 30.
- Dance competition: Plans to give both audience votes to Jiang Nian. To avoid Fu’s request for support, he persuades Wen Jincheng to take his phone so he can pretend not to have seen her messages 41.
- Bodhi Island confrontation: Tells Fu that saving his life does not entitle her to hurt Jiang Nian. He warns that further attacks will make him oppose her without restraint, even at the cost of reviving his nightmares 71.
- Cliff attack: Warns Jiang Nian about Fu’s unsettling behavior, then rushes toward the beach after Jiang falls into the sea while saving Tong Chuhe 72.
Earlier Lives and the Final Reset
The later revelations establish that Song Jici’s devotion predates the current timeline and that his sacrifice made its different outcome possible 122 123 124.
| Event | Chapter | Song Jici’s actions and discoveries |
|---|---|---|
| Original life | 116 117 | Rejects Fu’s malicious remarks about Jiang Nian. After witnessing Fu push Jiang Nian off a cliff, awakens at his kidnapping at age ten. |
| First remembered reset | 117 118 | Recognizes Fu as a threat and kills her. Her death immediately returns him to the same kidnapping scene. |
| Changed strategy | 118 119 | Escapes by a different route, reunites with friends who remember earlier lives, and helps imprison Fu. Jiang Nian’s aversion to a dish she previously enjoyed later arouses his suspicion. |
| Last illegal cycle | 120 | Pretends to accept Fu’s attention while seeking a permanent solution. Rescues Fu instead of Jiang Nian at school and keeps his distance from Jiang, believing it may protect her; cannot explain the past lives. |
| Understanding the reset rules | 121 122 | Learns that deaths during the world’s Stable Period trigger resets. The Bureau explains Despair’s role and why Fu’s soul exchange made her death another trigger. |

| Sacrifice and separation | 123 | Rewinds the world to age ten and arranges for Jiang Nian to spend six years in another world, where she may encounter Vitality. His younger self forgets her after she disappears. |
| Truth revealed in the current timeline | 124 | Receives Jiang Nian’s embrace after Grandma explains his sacrifice. Admits that he would make the same choice again. |
Childhood Promise and Proposal
At twenty, Song Jici opens the time capsule with Jiang Nian. The rediscovered ring exposes his childhood marriage request and forces him to confront his fear that she loves only his sacrificial past-life self. He decides that, whether she accepts him now or not, he will continue loving her 130 131.
He proposes using the wedding vows he copied as a child. Jiang Nian responds warmly but points out two problems: he has knelt on both knees, and he has not yet reached the legal marriage age of twenty-two. Their parents witness the scene, with Jiang Baisong protesting loudly 131.
Restored Memories
When Jiang Nian chooses to recover her lost childhood memories, Song Jici hopes the restoration will confirm experiences that only he remembers. During her temporary regression into a child, he ties her hair into bunny ears and lets her style his hair in return. Once she returns to her adult form with her memories restored, he and Jiang Wang prepare her favorite breakfast 142 143.
