Background / History
Purchase and early training
Koichi chooses Epiphaneia as the colt’s registered name and Divine Might as his nickname after completing the purchase paperwork. Mirai is assigned his initial care. As he settles into ranch life away from his mother, he eagerly joins the other young horses in their paddock 140.
His permanent care team forms around trainer Megumi Mitsumori, groom Kuga Kai, and exercise rider Yamana Takuto. Kuga joins through Hitachi Yosuke’s recommendation. Koichi approves a training plan aimed at stalker or closer tactics, while carrot rewards help Epiphaneia accept unfamiliar exercises 142 146.
Epiphaneia initially progresses faster than Gold Ship did, but competitive workouts reveal a different problem: he cannot tolerate another horse gaining on him. Changing training partners does not resolve the behavior, and the team concludes that it stems from his personality 154 165 179 180 393.
Developing his racing partnerships
Ikezoe first rides Epiphaneia at Koichi’s request for the Ability Test. The colt immediately dislikes the unfamiliar jockey and becomes restless when mounted. Nevertheless, Ikezoe recognizes his potential and continues working with him through exhausting training sessions 330 331 402 403.
With Koichi abroad, Ikezoe handles Epiphaneia’s debut campaign. Their partnership gradually improves: during the debut, gentle restraint allows Epiphaneia to conserve energy rather than chase the leaders immediately. By his first graded stakes, he understands Ikezoe’s commands much more readily 425 426 486.
Koichi takes over for the Yayoi Sho after winter rest. Their close personal bond becomes a racing partnership, and the team adapts its tactics to Epiphaneia rather than insisting on his original training style. The Satsuki Sho demonstrates that he can control a race from the front as well as produce a late finishing burst 535 577 578.
Recovery and later campaign
The Derby leaves Epiphaneia unusually depleted. He eats less than normal, greets Koichi without his usual energy, and quickly returns to lying down. Megumi arranges a pasture break at Hokkai Ranch to help him recover away from the heat 598.
During the summer, Koichi spends more time playing with him. His competitive habits remain, but he learns patience, making race positioning a shared responsibility between horse and jockey. On returning to training, his earlier fatigue has faded and his muscle mass has increased 600 614 617 618 619.
After completing the Triple Crown, Epiphaneia receives another extended ranch holiday. He recovers well and resumes training with Ikezoe for the Arima Kinen, where Koichi is set to partner Gold Ship. The stable plans to keep the rivals apart and use a hood on Epiphaneia for the race 634 641 656 662 665.
Appearance
- Bay coat: Explicitly identified during his Derby contest with the dark bay Gentildonna 595.
- Large, muscular build: At his debut, he weighs 490 kilograms, making him a large horse among the newcomers 425.
- Glossy coat: Koichi notices that his coat has become shinier as he grows 355.
- Family resemblance: Ikezoe sees features of both Symboli Kris S and Special Week in him 330.
- Powerful stride: His finishing runs feature long, fast strides and visibly defined muscles 426 623.
Personality
Epiphaneia is fiercely competitive and resists letting other horses run ahead of him. Early in training, a rival’s approach can provoke immediate acceleration and a tug-of-war with his rider. His confidence also affects stable life: in Gold Ship’s absence, Megumi describes him as another “little tyrant” 179 180 331 355 393.
With Koichi, he is affectionate, clingy, and possessive. As a youngster, he drives his paddock companions away to monopolize Koichi’s attention. Later, merely hearing Koichi’s name makes him look out of his stall; before the Satsuki Sho, he searches for the jockey and settles once he finds him 141 391 484 575.
He enjoys companionship but makes it difficult to provide. Koichi’s attempts to find a compatible horse all fail because Epiphaneia is provocative toward potential companions. His gentler side appears in playful nuzzling, nibbling Koichi’s hair and clothes, and leaning on him during photographs 578 614 634.
Abilities & Skills
Finishing Acceleration
- Produces a powerful final burst even after resisting his rider during the Ability Test 331.
- Wins his debut by four lengths, continuing to widen the gap after taking the lead 426.
- Pulls clear decisively in both the Kobe Shimbun Hai and Kikuka Sho 623 632.
- Limit: Accelerating too early disrupts his rhythm and wastes stamina. Koichi notes that he cannot reproduce Gold Ship’s pattern of accelerating again later in the run 286.
Stamina and Distance Range
- Koichi judges early on that 2,400 meters should present no stamina problem 141.
- Demonstrates winning ability over 1,800 meters in his debut, 2,400 meters in the Kobe Shimbun Hai, and 3,000 meters in the Kikuka Sho 426 622 623 631 632.
- Limit: Major efforts can require substantial recovery; both the Derby and Kikuka Sho leave him exhausted 598 641.
Starting and Race Positioning
- Breaks cleanly in the Ability Test and major races, helping his rider establish a favorable position 331 486 622 634.
- Can race just behind the leaders, settle in fourth, or dictate a slow pace from the front 425 577 622.
- Limit: Being crowded or boxed in provokes frustration. Rival teams identify this as a weakness they can exploit 588 594.
Responsiveness and Learned Patience
- Responds especially well to Koichi’s handling and reassurance 393 535 575.
- Gradually learns to accept restraint and wait for a suitable opening 426 618.
- Follows Koichi’s cues promptly during the Kikuka Sho, moving away from the rail when an obstruction slows 632.
- Limit: Improvement does not eliminate his temperament; Ikezoe still recognizes the same underlying problems before the Arima Kinen 656.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Protective leg wraps — Worn during transport to protect all four legs 329 590.
- System-provided bridle — Supplied by Koichi and used to help control him while boxed in during the Derby 590 594.
- Race hood — Planned for the Arima Kinen while the staff also keep him separated from Gold Ship 662.
- Koichi’s special carrots — Used as training rewards and to ease post-training fatigue to some extent 146 535.
Relationships
- Koichi Sasaki — Owner, jockey, and favorite companion. Epiphaneia eagerly seeks his attention and enjoys their customary post-race cuddles and photographs 427 575 578 634.
- Megumi Mitsumori — Trainer. Designs his training, monitors his condition, and balances confidence in his ability with concern about his temperament 146 393 598.
- Kuga Kai — Groom and regular handler. Oversees his feeding, grooming, transport, and immediate post-race care; prioritizes his safe return from competition 146 329 425 623.
- Yamana Takuto — Initial exercise rider. Helps establish his basic training and briefs Ikezoe on his habits before the Ability Test 146 330.
- Kenichi Ikezoe — Ability Test rider and two-year-old campaign jockey. Persists through Epiphaneia’s resistance and returns to ride him for the planned Arima Kinen campaign 331 402 486 656 662.
- Gold Ship — Persistent rival and eventual “sworn enemy.” Neither yields to the other, and staff frequently separate them to prevent trouble 179 535 590 614.
- Mirai — Early caretaker and publicity support. Initially rejected when attempting to pet him, she later earns more trust through familiar care and treats 140 425 487 523.
- Flagship — Major Classic rival. Epiphaneia narrowly defeats him in the Satsuki Sho 575 578.
- Gentildonna — Opponent in the Derby’s decisive final contest 594 595.
- Deep Bond — A rival Koichi identifies as a serious obstacle during planning for Epiphaneia’s early career and Classic campaign 141 535 588.
Trivia
