Background
Koichi grew up at Hokkai Ranch alongside childhood friend Miku Kuchiki. On returning home, he discovers that his father has run up debts too large for the ranch’s available funds to cover, apparently borrowing against the property before leaving overseas 1.
He attended jockey school, where daily weigh-ins and weight maintenance were especially difficult because of his height. In a later television appearance, he describes childhood enthusiasm for racing and the desire to restore Hokkai Ranch, which had dwindled to a few broodmares with no horses in training 265.
His uncle, Ayumu Kusakawa, introduces him to Aoe Ranch. A chance encounter with a tantrum-throwing Golden Masterpiece leads to their partnership, giving Koichi a professional opening despite the horse’s history of rejecting jockeys 11 265.
Appearance
- Handsome young man: Yosuke notices his looks on his first official workday; Kotomi later remarks that interview makeup enhances them further 8 106.
- Tall for a jockey: His height makes jockey-school weight management more demanding 265.
- Strong upper body: Fukunaga observes his sturdy arms and developed back muscles, praising the stamina and arm strength displayed during the Arc 463.
Personality
Koichi is usually modest and uncomfortable with conspicuous praise. He credits his early opportunity to his uncle and luck, asks Miku to remove a celebratory banner after his first win, and initially has little interest in deliberately building a fan base 6 26 158.
He is considerate toward the people and horses supporting his career. He declines an early celebration because the staff are tired, directs his father’s returned money toward ranch operations, and eases off the whip when the aging Triumphal March begins tiring 6 246 531.
His relaxed manner off the track contrasts with his seriousness in competition. He studies race footage, seeks senior jockeys’ advice, and continues reviewing tactics even after major international victories 213 400 503.
He also has a vindictive competitive streak. Following an earlier fall, he deliberately targets Yasuo Iwata in subsequent races, sometimes baiting him with apparent openings. After Ikezoe warns him against making rivalries personal, Koichi says he knows where to stop 363 366.
Abilities & Skills
Horse Handling and Racecraft
- Builds trust through grooming, regular training, treats, and attention to each horse’s temperament 8 47 179.
- Identifies Golden Masterpiece’s difficulty with left-handed courses and seeks the trainer’s help before the next Tokyo campaign 66 67 72.
- Adapts tactics to a mount’s strengths: his front-running win on Takezono Power exploits quick early acceleration while compensating for a weaker finishing kick 531.
- Uses pace judgment and patience to escape being boxed in, notably waiting for the front-runners’ pace to collapse in the Takarazuka Kinen 410.
- Continues learning in weaker areas. Elite mile-race speed requires adjustment, and he still has no dirt graded-stakes victory when reflecting after Dubai 366 566.
Soothing / Calming
Reduces a horse’s agitation, allowing Koichi to handle mounts that remain difficult for other riders.
- Prevents Golden Masterpiece from threatening a staff member and stops Gold Ship and Epiphaneia from fighting during joint training 13 179.
- Helps him approach and lead away an agitated Golden Masterpiece in Europe 438.
- Has limits: even with Calming and a system-drawn bridle, Epiphaneia approaches a temperamental eruption when trapped among rivals 594.
Telepathic Bond
Supports Koichi’s awareness of a horse’s emotional state 98 614.
- Lets him sense Golden Masterpiece’s moods during training 98.
- May also convey his intentions to the horse; Koichi treats this as a possibility while testing the ability, not as a fully established function 98.
Mighty Arm and Windmill Whip
Finishing-drive skills that Koichi can use together 214 587.
- Mighty Arm helps him withstand Rave’s late challenge and win on Bright Sword by half a head 337.
- Provides a substantial advantage on dirt, where forceful driving produces a stronger speed boost 569.
- Used together on Gaia City in the NHK Mile Cup, securing third despite a pace that ultimately favors the closers 587.
- Cannot guarantee victory or overcome every stamina limitation 587.
Inside-Track Breakthrough
Helps Koichi position for an escape along the rail 569.
- Particularly suited to midfield and closing runners 569.
- Requires a usable opening, correct timing, and a responsive horse; a blocked inside route leaves him trapped in his first race after drawing it 569.
- Later contributes to his Derby victory 614.
Quick Reaction
- Enables him to dodge Golden Masterpiece’s playful stomp during a group photograph 514.
- Does not eliminate the horse’s antics: Golden Masterpiece later lands a light foreleg kick during the same session 514.
Heavy Track
- Provides a passive performance boost on soft or heavy going 614.
- Can help a horse perform somewhat better on unsuitable ground, but positioning and the horse’s own aptitude still matter 614.
Rookie Horse Training
- Improves his ability to guide and develop two-year-old horses 661.
- Works only while the horse is two years old 661.
- Koichi particularly values it for Black North’s approaching debut, while recognizing that skills cannot erase a horse’s limitations 661.
Horse Assessment
- Uses temperament to help choose racing styles, agreeing that the competitive Epiphaneia should be developed as a front-runner or pressing runner 141.
- Assesses physical development through direct observation and discussion with exercise riders 181 183.
- Identifies Man o’ War’s sharp reactions and speed as promising for races around 1,400–1,600 meters 571.
- Earns Saki’s confidence as a buyer through the performances of Epiphaneia and Man o’ War 614.
Equipment & System Items
- Racing silks — Designed and supplied by Ayumu, who also sends information on Koichi’s early opponents 8 15.
- System-drawn bridle — Works alongside Calming to help restrain Epiphaneia under pressure, without completely suppressing his anger 594.
- Track Cards — Improve course familiarity or sharpen his racing form. He uses two during an intense Tokyo race day and another while learning Hanshin 351 400.
- Experience Books — Draw rewards received alongside skills or Track Cards; their precise effects are not explained in the supplied passages 214 468.
- Draw-system carrots — Used as treats and training incentives; carrots left with Megumi can ease horses’ fatigue to some extent 179 535.
- Lucky Draw chances — Earned through racing missions and achievements. His initial debut objective promises ten improved draws for a top-three finish 6.

Horses
- Golden Masterpiece / Asho / Artie — His first major racing partner and the foundation of his early success. Their bond survives the horse’s aggression, mischievous attacks, and a period riding apart; their final race together is their Arc victory 11 438 463 514.

- Japan Jordan — His first independently secured major ride. Winning the Autumn Tenno Sho on him helps demonstrate Koichi’s ability beyond Golden Masterpiece 194 215.
- One-Way Passage — A horse housed at Hokkai Ranch that is fond of Koichi, even when they are about to become race opponents 250 626.
- Man o’ War — Purchased as a yearling and developed as a promising miler. Koichi looks forward to regular rides after the horse’s gate test 571.
- Black North — A younger purchase whose future debut motivates Koichi’s enthusiasm for Rookie Horse Training 614 661.
