The train attendant Anthony had summoned was the one who had discovered the body. He looked to be in his thirties, and his face was rather pale. When he entered the Salon Car and saw Li Wei, his lips trembled involuntarily, but he quickly regained his composure.
"Hello, detective."
"Hello. Please, sit down."
Li Wei had him sit, then asked his name and age again. The train attendant answered each question truthfully.
Next, Li Wei asked,
"I'd like you to describe how you discovered the body again."
"Certainly, sir. I went to the guest's room to ask whether he wanted afternoon tea. Although he didn't like leaving his room, he always had tea in the late morning and afternoon."
"You certainly took good care of him."
"He gave me a very generous tip, sir."
The train attendant smiled sheepishly.
"And then?"
"I knocked, but there was no response, so I wondered whether something had happened to him-you know how that guest almost never left his room."
"Perhaps he'd gone to the restroom?"
"That didn't occur to me at the time, sir. I just knocked and asked whether he was there, but nobody answered. I was worried he might have suddenly fallen ill..."
"Why would you think that?"
Li Wei interrupted the train attendant, who froze for a moment.
"Ah, because he looked very unhealthy, and when I brought him meals before, I noticed medicine on his table..."
"Medicine?"
"Yes. I don't know what kind, but I imagine the gentleman was taking medication."
"Hmm... go on."
"We train attendants have a master key for emergencies, so I took out my key and opened the door. Then I saw the gentleman lying on the floor. It gave me quite a fright, and I hurried back out. Then I came to find you."
