Background / History
Upbringing and inheritance
Ovelia grew up confident in her noble birth, intelligence, and family legacy. She studied at the Royal Academy of Medicine and knew Li Wei by reputation before meeting him. Following her social debut, she attracted numerous suitors but encouraged none of them 91.
The Baskervilles descended from a female knight nicknamed “Arthur’s Hound.” Their records showed a roughly thousand-year tradition of female leadership, interrupted by three recent male heads. Ovelia was the first girl born after that interruption 92 93.
Her father’s disappearance left her responsible for the family. The circumstances were urgent enough that the customary succession formalities before the ancestor were simplified; she was already acting as family head during Li Wei’s investigation 93 94.
The Baskerville curse investigation
Ovelia initially blamed the Wolf King for her father’s disappearance and demanded that it be killed publicly to demonstrate the family’s strength. Chief Macmillan feared that she would pursue it herself and asked Li Wei to watch over her 91.
Her cooperation gave Li Wei access to the family’s crests, archives, accounts, cemetery, and sealed rooms. When he uncovered two small skeletons beneath a wolf statue, he tentatively identified them as her grandfather’s sister and her father’s sister. Ovelia promised them proper burials and ordered those present to keep the discovery secret 92 93 94.
Despite warnings that an abandoned storeroom was cursed, she ordered it opened. Li Wei discovered a concealed study beyond its wall, where they subsequently found the Emerald Heart 95 96.
After helping defend the manor against a coordinated wolf attack, Ovelia was abducted by a giant werewolf. In captivity, she recognized her great-grandfather, who admitted murdering his sister and poisoning his mother to seize the family leadership. He took the Emerald Heart and threatened to devour her, claiming that her death would end the curse 98 99.
Ovelia escaped her bindings and stabbed him, but his transformation allowed him to survive. He then ordered her transformed father to attack her. Li Wei intervened, killed the smaller wolf, and eventually returned the necklace to Ovelia. Her blood activated it, summoning the hound that killed and devoured her great-grandfather 99 100 101.
The great-grandfather’s diary revealed that he had spread the curse story to control his descendants and had attacked family members on their thirty-eighth birthdays. Ovelia continued investigating the Luddites’ involvement and paid Li Wei £10,000 after tax for resolving the case 101 102.
Steel City and royal recognition
Ovelia visited Fog City with Little Black and later traveled with Li Wei on the Orient Express. During the journey, she questioned whether the family should retain its female-only inheritance customs, fearing that passing over a future son could recreate the resentment behind its earlier violence 151 153.
In Steel City, she offered to help retake the Central Data Tower. The Queen had authorized her family to use its supernatural strength when the Empire faced a threat. Ovelia also recognized that helping the governor could build useful political connections 171.
Little Black destroyed two construction mechs at the tower entrance and carried Ovelia, Li Wei, and Kia inside. Ovelia fought the rioters with hidden knives while Kia reversed the sabotaged calculations. Ovelia and the hound became a public sensation afterward; she angrily rejected researchers’ proposals to examine, breed, or draw blood from him 172 173 175.
At the New Year’s investiture, the Queen praised Ovelia’s courage in Steel City and formally recognized her as head of the Baskerville Family and lord of Delicat 207.
The monastery expedition
A map recovered from a Luddite headquarters led Ovelia to send investigators into the mountains. When they disappeared, she visited the site herself. The immense, apparently abandoned structure resembled a monastery rather than a castle, and both Ovelia and Little Black sensed danger. She withdrew and sought help from Li Wei and Annie 209 210.
Ovelia insisted on accompanying the expedition because she had sent the missing team and wanted to recover their belongings for their families. She refused her guards’ request to retreat even after the group encountered a monster 210 212.
Inside the monastery, she identified murals depicting King Solomon’s fall. When Li Wei suggested that the Luddites might intend to awaken Solomon and transform Delicate’s inhabitants into monsters, she vowed to stop them 217.
The original investigators were never found and were presumed dead. Ovelia permitted Annie to return with a research team but declined Solomon’s relics, considering them inauspicious 226.
Later investigations and political uncertainty
Ovelia became increasingly concerned that the Queen’s centralization policies would end Baskerville rule over Delicate. Family pressure to marry complicated that prospect: marriage and children could bind her more tightly to the house’s political interests. Li Wei promised to support her if she needed him, sealing the assurance with a pinky swear 437.
She began learning investigative work through operations with local police and instruction from an experienced officer. During a late-night radio-station raid, she deliberately withheld the reason for the arrest, correcting an earlier mistake in which she had revealed too much to a suspect 445.
Later, she requested Li Wei’s help after the Delicate Central Bank’s vault was emptied. She also raised suspicions about Baron Payne, the family’s grain-export agent: investigators looking into him either found nothing or died in supposed accidents 630 633.
By the later discussion of imperial reforms, Ovelia actively welcomed the prospect of losing her territorial office. As the family’s sole surviving blood descendant, she saw little future in preserving its political arrangements and hoped to move to Fog City, open a café, and retire from lordship 712.
Appearance
- Hair: Blonde, with golden curls 91 151.
- Eyes: Clear blue 101.
- Clothing: Wears riding clothes, everyday dresses, and the elaborate fashionable attire of a wealthy young noblewoman 91 153 163.
- Usual companion: Frequently carries Little Black in his harmless-looking puppy form 151 153 206.
Personality
Ovelia is proud, commanding, and protective of the Baskerville name. Servants fear her displeasure, and her orders carry enough authority to overcome both household superstition and police reluctance. Her initial response to the Wolf King is openly defiant rather than cautious 91 94 95.
Her courage does not mean she is immune to fear. She remains cold and composed while confronting her monstrous great-grandfather, but the summoned hound’s violence leaves her struggling not to collapse in terror. She nevertheless acts decisively when escape or cooperation offers a chance to survive 99 100 101.
She is notably warmer and more deferential toward Li Wei than toward others. His investigative ability wins her respect, while his presence makes her nervous and distracts her for hours as she watches him work. Later, she envies Katie’s freedom to accompany him and imagines a quieter future that includes occasional investigations 91 94 437 445 630.
Her aristocratic upbringing can limit her understanding of ordinary people. On the Orient Express, she struggles to believe that someone would kill for what she regards as a small amount of money. In governing Delicate, however, she increasingly focuses on farmers’ needs and learns to persuade through visible results rather than commands alone 157 210 630.
Leadership also exposes her to uncomfortable moral questions. Although she condemns her ancestors’ murders, she briefly describes their handling of succession as the “best of a bad lot” for preventing family division, while still finding it horrible. Li Wei encourages her to question whether those inherited customs remain necessary 153.
