Typists were somewhat like modern office workers, chiefly responsible for typing on typewriters. Since this era had nothing as convenient as computers, and typewriters themselves were troublesome to operate, many people hired professional typists to take down their dictation.

Even writers hired typists to work for them. In this era, typing was a suitable, respectable job that women with some education could find relatively easily, and it also gave them opportunities to meet men from different social classes.
