Over the past few months, Roland had hardly worried about his papers, but that did not mean he had been doing nothing.
He was still filling in details within the framework of his previous achievements, trying to refine the entire system.
Its current development had progressed from "extrapolating" words to syntax and composition. The oracle inscriptions and record inscriptions he had mentioned were ready-made examples.
Setting aside his own "inventions" and considering only the relevant research from Blue Star in his previous life, the preface inscription, also called the narrative inscription, recorded the time of the divination and the names of those involved; the charge inscription recorded the matter to be divined; the divination inscription recorded the result indicated by the cracks; and the verification inscription recorded how events subsequently bore it out.
These could already clearly describe times and places, people and events, causes and consequences, conveying a great deal of information.
The people of the Shang revered spirits and gods, turning to divination at the drop of a hat. Of the various types of Oracle writing, oracle inscriptions were the most important. As it happened, Roland had read the Collected Oracle Bone Inscriptions in his previous life, and they had left a lasting impression. There was a wealth of material here to be mined-or transplanted.
If he could successfully transplant all of it, the entire system would speak for itself.
If not, it would severely undermine his project to transplant its historical and cultural soil.
Writing, after all, was intimately bound up with history and culture. Only with a solid foundation could it flourish.
As for recording events, that had magic of its own, just like poetry.
Everyone was so accustomed to this power that they overlooked what was wondrous about it.
But Roland would not overlook it.
