| First Appearance | Chapter 89, “Xiao Yu” 89. |
Appearance
- Bird form: About five feet long when first introduced, with broad patches of red, yellow, emerald green, and indigo plumage 89.
- Iridescent feathers: Tiny gleams of rainbow light ripple across her feathers in sunlight; rapid flight can leave a multicolored afterimage 112 224.
- Spiritual form: Appears as a young girl wearing an exquisite feathered garment or multicolored dress. This humanlike appearance belongs to her spirit, rather than a documented physical transformation 89 197 207.
- Voice: Black Snake finds her voice lovely and associates it with the appeal of birdsong 89.
- Unusual radiance: Lin Wei notices her beauty and spiritual radiance, suggesting she may be more than an ordinary demon bird, but does not question her origins 212.
Personality
Xiao Yu is initially cautious but courteous. Unlike the demon cultivators who flee from Black Snake, she stays to observe him and accepts his introduction. Their first conversation includes half an hour of companionable silence—a pattern that continues through later visits, when she is content to sit nearby and preen without needing a particular reason to talk 89 106.
She values freedom and companionship more than a particular home or prestigious affiliation. She accepts moving to Pillowstar Mountain because Jin Si will be there, provided her freedom remains intact; if she dislikes it, she considers herself free to leave 197 207.
Her loyalty is practical and protective. She repeatedly scouts, fights, and runs errands for her friends, but does not regard every risk as worthwhile. During an escort mission, she stays beside Jin Si’s vulnerable body when a threat appears, placing his safety above the mission’s unseen reward. She also warns him against becoming entangled in human struggles and rejects his enthusiasm for lightning-strike cultivation 117 129 232.
Xiao Yu can be blunt and playful. She dismisses Jin Si’s confusing map, corrects his mistaken assumptions about territory, and answers his question about her natural flying ability with the single word “Feathers” 224 248 262.
Abilities & Skills
Flight and Aerial Maneuvering
Xiao Yu’s speed and mobility make her the group’s principal aerial scout and guide 168 210.
- Crosses mountainous terrain much faster than Black Snake; on their first cave expedition, she repeatedly lands to wait for him 99.
- Uses dives, sharp climbs, circling maneuvers, and feints to distract opponents while Jin Si approaches unseen 165 187 250.
- Flies to Pillowstar Mountain’s gate and returns with a white crane feather to demonstrate her speed 224.
- Adjusts her distance during storms because lightning remains dangerous to her 250.
- Faces substantial limitations at night and withdraws from Hu’er’s escort before darkness rather than force a dangerous battle 122.
Keen Eyesight and Reconnaissance
Her eyesight compensates for Jin Si’s poor distance vision 106 210.
- Locates him among clouds and mountain shadows, surveys settlements, and describes distant buildings and terrain 106 168 210.
- Searches Great Black Mountain and nearby villages and towns for a suspected enemy, discovering two powerful ghosts instead 168.
- Guides companions through unfamiliar terrain and checks their home while they are away 105 168 248.
- Cannot reliably see people concealed beneath rocks or inside caves; rain, foliage, and darkness can also obstruct her view 101 105 248.
Piercing Cry
Xiao Yu’s cry can function as a warning or a disorienting attack 101 171.
- Produces a sound wave likened to an invisible sharp awl, causing ringing ears and intense dizziness in the iron-rod cultivator 101.
- Creates openings for Black Snake’s attacks and supports aerial harassment 101 250.
- Warns an unfamiliar Yin Spirit away from her territory 171.
- Can reveal the group’s position: her cry exposes the coveted cave site and draws nearby beings toward it 103.
Talons and Close Combat
Her talons allow precise attacks and practical manipulation of objects 102.
- Blinds the iron-rod cultivator with a diving strike into both eye sockets, decisively turning the battle 102.
- Attacks a living corpse from above while Black Snake engages it head-on 103.
- Tears open clothing, searches pockets, and scratches at a protective inner garment 102.
- A wounded wing can compromise her attacks: after blinding the cultivator, her damaged wing gives way and she crashes 102.
- Cannot break the powerful formation maintained by the dragon-vein defenders through aerial attacks alone 250.
Spiritual Cultivation and Realm Travel
Xiao Yu already possesses a Yin Spirit at her first appearance. Later passages describe her humanlike spiritual manifestation as a primordial spirit, but do not specify a breakthrough chapter or a newly attained realm 89 207.
- Communicates spiritually without leaving her physical body and teaches Black Snake that he can do the same 99.
- Visits the Spirit Realm before Black Snake and explains how to sense its barrier and open a passage 156 157.
- Independently opens a passage while flying back to the Spirit Realm 187.
- Senses the small unseen reward associated with completing the cultivator escort to Pillowstar Mountain 233.
Literacy, Memory, and Field Care
- Knows a few written characters, but has never properly attended school; she and Jin Si decipher Lin Wei’s letter slowly together 112 207.
- Remembers Lin Wei’s Library Pavilion instructions, giving Jin Si someone to rely on despite his poor memory 212.
- Tends medicinal fields by removing weeds she recognizes, deliberately leaving unfamiliar plants alone 171.
- Is entrusted by Xu Jin with watching his Medicine Field while he leaves to seek a disciple 152.
History
Meeting Black Snake
Xiao Yu first meets Black Snake on a wooded hill beside the River. He approaches through his Yin Spirit, hoping to find another demon cultivator willing to talk. She explains that the others fear being eaten, exchanges names with him, and leaves open the possibility of another visit. Over the following twenty years, she becomes one of his regular companions 89 98.
The Cave Expedition
Xiao Yu invites Black Snake to explore a spiritually rich cave beyond five mountains. Inside, they find the scorched, soulless remains of a cultivator whose body crumbles to dust. Black Snake discovers that tree roots penetrating the ceiling had provided a path for lightning into the cave 99.
An armed cultivator ambushes them, injuring Xiao Yu’s wing with an Iron Pellet. She nevertheless distracts him with her cry and later blinds him with her talons, allowing Black Snake to finish the fight. The attacker admits that he believed the cave offered a route to ascension and wanted to prevent interference 101 102.
The pair recuperate at the cave and fight an approaching living corpse, but abandon the site when outsiders arrive and its location becomes public. They return to Xu Jin’s valley, where he treats Xiao Yu’s injury and helps assess their recovered spoils 103 105.
Helping Friends in the Mortal Realm
Xiao Yu investigates the cultivators pursuing a child said to come from the Upper Realm, then guides Black Snake to Hu’er and his family. During their journey toward Lin Family Crossing, she fetches hot medicinal broth twice for the feverish boy 118 120 122.
She also supports Black Snake’s unsuccessful search for spirit-awakened ginseng before He Ning’s death. Later, she looks after Xu Jin’s medicinal field and asks about further good deeds that might earn unseen cultivation rewards 127 152.
Life in the Spirit Realm
After visiting the newly publicized Spirit Realm, Xiao Yu teaches Black Snake how to reach it. They choose an inconspicuous mountain suitable for peaceful cultivation rather than compete for famous spiritual sites. She helps defend their territory, tends the herb field, and keeps him informed about events beyond his secluded home 156 162 165 171.
Her exploration of the Pale Golden Cloud Sea provides the lead that prompts Black Snake to investigate a distant battle involving Red Clothes. Xiao Yu later supports his confrontation with the old man outside Azure Cloud Monastery and returns to the Spirit Realm when he asks her to withdraw 173 175 187.
Joining Pillowstar Mountain
When Black Snake adopts the name Jin Si and accepts Pillowstar Mountain’s invitation, Xiao Yu agrees to accompany him. She travels there with him and Red Clothes, scouts the mountain, and is formally registered through a portrait and an aura-marked name plaque 197 207 210 211.
Lin Wei appoints Xiao Yu and Jin Si guardians of the Library Pavilion. The pair select a secluded cliffside location for their home, and Xiao Yu retrieves Red Clothes while Jin Si transports their belongings and digs a den. Xiao Yu subsequently spends an extended period at the pavilion carrying out their watch duty 212 215.
Escort Missions and Later Hunts
Xiao Yu accompanies Jin Si and Red Clothes on a mission to escort an accomplished cultivator to Pillowstar Mountain. When an uncanny threat appears, she guards Jin Si’s body and warns him; after the escort succeeds, all three perceive an unseen reward 228 232 233.
She later helps Red Clothes kill fiends attempting to capture her as a Ghost-Refining Slave. During the dragon-vein operation, Xiao Yu serves as lookout, navigator, and diversion, then performs a final aerial search after the group eliminates the remaining marked targets 246 248 250 251.
When Pillowstar Mountain requests help against nearby evil spirits, she joins her companions’ hunts and patrols from above. The group eventually clears a broad stretch of land, although Xiao Yu points out that they have wandered beyond the mountain’s actual territory 259 261 262 265.
