Mulan first returned to the York District Police Station. Though the workday was already over, plenty of people were still there. Many officers had been injured, but fortunately, most had only superficial wounds and were having them dressed and treated at the station. The nearby hospitals and clinics were busy taking in the seriously wounded.
Mulan did not go inside. He took a look from outside, then headed straight home.
The Black Castle was much the same as ever, but Mulan had a guilty conscience today. Though he followed his usual routine, he was somewhat nervous on his way back. Fortunately, no one paid him any attention. When he reached his residence, however, he spotted someone standing outside his door from a distance.
Mulan's heart gave a little jolt. He walked toward his residence as though nothing was wrong, only relaxing slightly once he got close enough to see that it was Dolly.
"You're an hour later than usual today."
Before Mulan could speak, Dolly spoke first.
Mulan shrugged and said helplessly,
"There was a major riot in the Industrial District today. The entire York District police force was deployed, and I went to investigate too, so I was busy until late."
Then his tone shifted, and he teased her.
"You keep an eye on when I come home every day?"
"Yes. I know whenever you come home. Are you planning to stand outside and talk to me all evening?"
Mulan hurried forward, took out his key, and opened the door, then gestured for her to enter.
"Please come in, Ms. Dolly. This is your first visit since we came to the Black Castle."
