Conis's words finally shattered Angel Island's peace and quiet, plunging it into unprecedented panic. Everyone ran for their lives with luggage on their backs.
"Hey!"
"Do you know what happened to God's Army? My husband is there! I want to escape with him!"
A woman grabbed the silent Conis by the arm and shook her hard as she spoke.
"My son is there too! God's Army is all right, isn't it?"
"My husband is there too!"
More and more people with family members in God's Army gathered around, each asking more anxiously than the last.
Conis knew that God's Army had probably met a terrible fate. She wanted to tell them what had happened, but she simply couldn't bring herself to speak. After all, it would be too cruel to these people who had waited six whole years for their loved ones...
"I don't know either..."
Faced with their questions, Conis could only offer that vague reply.
"What exactly happened to God's Army?"
"What do you know?"
Seeing Conis's troubled expression, the people around her grew increasingly anxious.
Just as Conis struggled to answer, a voice rang out.
"Leave God's Army to us White Berets! We'll make sure they catch up with you soon!"
"Please go on ahead! Don't panic!"
"Captain McKinley?"
Conis looked in surprise at the captain who had come to her rescue, but he was barely holding himself together as he spoke.
"I understand. To be honest, I'd already guessed what happened to God's Army. That's the kind of man Enel is."
"But getting the islanders to safety is what matters most right now. I won't let Enel repeat what happened at Birka!"
"Birka?"
Conis looked at McKinley in confusion.
"It's
