Background / History
Arrival and the Rumbar Pirates
Barn initially flees from York’s crew because he assumes pirates are ruthless criminals. Learning the names of the Rumbar Pirates and Brook makes him realize where—and approximately when—he has arrived. He invents a story about losing his family in a shipwreck to secure a place aboard their ship, where the crew welcomes him with music 3.
York entrusts him to Brook. When questioned about his unusual left arm, Barn gives a largely fabricated account of being cursed by “Kazaan, the Wave Devil,” mixing it with an explanation of his Mind’s Eye. Brook believes him and becomes increasingly protective 4.
Barn earns Nidai Kitetsu’s recognition during a treasure expedition. Soon afterward, York discovers a nest and a newly hatched bird on Barn’s head; the bird becomes his companion, Fitz 6.
Sako’s Death and the Plague
During Planck’s attack, the crew initially keeps Barn below deck. Sako’s fatal wounds draw him into the battle: guided by Fitz, Barn kills enemy pirates and finishes Planck with Ground Wave Sword 8 9.
Barn lashes out at York for seeming calm about Sako’s death. After discovering that York has been crying alone, he apologizes and promises to live freely for both himself and Sako 9 10.
The crew later leaves the young Laboon at Reverse Mountain despite their mutual attachment. A subsequent plague infects everyone aboard, including Barn. His knowledge of the crew’s tragic future does not enable him to prevent it 12 13 14.
Barn awakens among his dead crewmates, believing the Life Fruit saved him. He gathers their bodies, says farewell, and leaves with Fitz, supplies, and Brook’s harmonica. He retains hope that Brook’s Revive-Revive Fruit will eventually bring him back 16.
Island Turtle and Amazon Lily
After five days adrift, Barn reaches what appears to be an island. He builds a cabin and defeats its strongest lion, gorilla, and crocodile, becoming the animals’ “king.” His refuge is actually an enormous Island Turtle traveling through the sea 16.
Barn spends five years aboard it because blindness makes independent sea navigation too dangerous. Hunting Sea Kings raises him to level 40. When the turtle returns to Amazon Lily, its empress mistakes him for a malnourished woman and orders his rescue 17 18.
His discovery as a man leads to confinement and intrusive examination by the islanders. Despite that humiliating introduction, he remains on Amazon Lily for fifteen years, training under Aishi and refining his perception and Haki. He also slays the Snake God, whose tooth he later wears as a necklace 18 23.
Whitebeard and a New Direction
Barn asks to stay aboard Whitebeard’s ship because he cannot sail alone. Whitebeard accepts him warmly, although Barn resists being treated as another of his sons. The crew’s welcome revives memories of the family he lost with the Rumbar Pirates 26.
His battle with Zephyr establishes his renewed notoriety. Barn survives Zephyr’s exceptional Armament Haki, defeats him with Immovable Wisdom King Formation, and collapses from exhaustion. He awakens three days later to a bounty of 230 million Beli and the epithet “Asura” 29 30.
At Sabaody, Barn leaves Whitebeard’s crew with Fitz and Adam, a boy he rescued from traffickers and renamed to give him a fresh start. He declares to Sengoku that he has quit piracy, pursues a coal-selling business, and meets the young blacksmith Lia 32.
Founding the Guild and Freeing Slaves
Over the following year, Barn teaches Adam swordsmanship while Adam and Lia manage their business. After identifying Fisher Tiger through scent and Mind’s Eye, Barn offers to help free the Celestial Dragons’ slaves 35.
Before acting, he sends Adam, Lia, and Fitz to the East Blue with approximately one billion Beli. Adam’s instructions are to destroy the Reinforcement Machine and establish a Mercenary Guild capable of eventually rivaling the Marines 35.
Barn accompanies Tiger to Mary Geoise. His resulting reputation includes freeing slaves and slaughtering nearly two hundred Celestial Dragons; afterward, he is imprisoned on Impel Down’s sixth level. Shiki frees him from his chains during the jailbreak 36 39 40.
After escaping, Barn reunites with Laboon and tells him that York and the others are dead. He also reunites with Crocus and Rayleigh before visiting the imprisoned Roger with Shiki and other escapees. Barn offers to free Roger, but Roger refuses and asks him to look after his child 44 45 135.
Building an Alliance
Barn adapts Laboon’s remodeled interior into a mobile home, allowing him to travel without navigating a ship himself. Shiki assists with the journey, while Adam insists on adding a bridge to protect Barn from the whale’s stomach acid 47.
The FFF Guild establishes a Sabaody branch, with Adam serving publicly as its president. Barn remains its concealed leader and supplies Adam with Sword Soul techniques remembered from his DNF system 64 92.
Barn defeats the young Moria but comes to admire his dreams of freedom and becoming Pirate King, which remind him of York. He also defeats and spares the young Mihawk after recognizing his exceptional potential 66 88.
Seeking strong allies against the World Government, Barn recruits World into a coalition and cites his connections with Shiki, Whitebeard, and Rayleigh. Leonard supports the project but warns that World’s hatred may make him difficult to control 74 92.
Kazaan, Jig, and the Five Elders
Barn’s Conqueror’s Haki awakens during his fight with Capulias. Inside his mindscape, he encounters Kazaan, who identifies himself as the source of the curse in Barn’s left hand. Barn refuses to surrender his body, but Kazaan overwhelms him and takes control 101 102.
The bald swordsman wielding Shodai Kitetsu defeats Kazaan and breaks Nidai Kitetsu. The blade’s destruction weakens Kazaan’s hold; a strike through Barn’s Ghost Hand helps Barn regain control 107.
While Barn recovers, nine-year-old Jig touches the cursed hand despite a warning. Kazaan transfers into him, and other ghosts gather to prepare a contract. Barn subsequently demonstrates the ability to restrain these hostile spirits 109 110 113.
Barn later faces the bald Elder again, now wielding First-Generation Onikiri. He reveals limb regeneration and uses Dark Sky Wave Eye to turn the fight in his favor, but revenge makes him underestimate the Elder’s endurance. Garp intervenes before Barn can kill him 154 155 156.
Roger’s Promise and Opposition to Slavery
Barn privately tells Ace about Roger and Rouge’s sacrifices. His account challenges Ace’s belief that he was born sinful and conveys Roger’s request that Barn protect him. After Ace leaves in tears, Barn remains alone grieving for Roger 134 135.
Barn also formalizes cooperation with Dragon. Although they share opposition to the World Government, Barn insists on retaining the freedom to act according to his own judgment 143 144 147.
At a Sabaody slave auction, Barn buys Yuna for 610 million Beli, kills the Celestial Dragon Marshuk and his guards, and removes her shackles. He then carries her away rather than fight the surrounding Marines and endanger bystanders. Yuna’s insistence that he take her home leaves him reluctantly responsible for her 166 167 168.
His investigation of the slave trade brings him into conflict with Gladius and leads him to Doflamingo’s palace in Dressrosa. Later, he seriously wounds Kaido using coordinated ghost powers, spares him, and escapes aboard Laboon—but the damage to his soul leaves him unconscious 172 178 186 187 188.
Zephyr and the Primordial Stones
After Shuzo attacks him, Barn kills him and waits for Zephyr. Their renewed duel ends with Barn destroying Zephyr’s mechanical arm and defeating him with Dark Sky Wave Eye. Zephyr refuses to reveal the NEO Marines’ plan even when Barn kills him 193 195 196 197 198.
Barn brings the matter to Dragon rather than assigning it solely to the Guild. Within a year, they dismantle the surviving NEO Marines and uncover Zephyr’s plan involving the Primordial Stones. Barn orders both organizations to locate and protect the stones, while warning that the Five Elders remain formidable and that he is not yet strong enough 199 201.
During later travels, he protects Vivi and Koza from Crocodile in Alabasta. On Jaya, he heals three Shandia warriors at the cost of his own lifespan, but insists that reclaiming their homeland must remain their own achievement 219 247.
Fisher Tiger’s Death and Thriller Bark
Learning that Fisher Tiger has died, Barn demands an explanation from the Marines. He attacks Kizaru and eventually faces Kizaru, Sengoku, Garp, Akainu, and the bald Elder, using lightning, Seastone, regeneration, and ghost power. He asks Dragon to help conceal the Guild’s involvement 265 266 267 268 269.
Barn then visits Wano to address a regret before the coming war. His mission to recover Ryuma’s body and Shusui brings him to Thriller Bark, where he reunites with Brook after fifty years and promises to help retrieve his stolen shadow 276 283.
Moria steals Barn’s shadow, but it resists his control and enters Zephyr’s corpse instead. Barn defeats the enhanced, resurrected Zephyr in Thunder God form; his shadow returns, and he imprisons Kazaan for draining his power 289 295 296.
Barn ultimately kills Moria. His later conversation with Kuma reveals discomfort over the act, particularly his memory of Moria’s tears. Kuma’s news that Blackbeard has handed Ace to the Marines turns Barn’s attention toward his promise to Roger 309.
Farewells and the Coming War
Barn promises Shanks that he will bring Ace back alive, even if he must use the Life Fruit’s last remaining resurrection opportunity. He also asks Shanks to look after Whitebeard’s children if anything happens to Newgate 274.
At Sabaody, Barn stays away from Adam and Lia’s wedding because Government surveillance could endanger them. He nevertheless protects the celebration from Marines and Cipher Pol, then visits the couple at night, apologizes, and leaves them Brook’s harmonica 311 330.
Barn returns to Amazon Lily and admits that he loves Hancock, but leaves because of the danger ahead. He offers the possibility of a future together if he survives. He then meets World and Shiki to begin their final preparations 330 336.
During the war, the bald Elder again blocks his path. Barn ultimately defeats him with Thunder God Asura Slash, allowing a devastating sword wound to create the opening for the fatal strike. Shodai Kitetsu breaks as the Elder falls 365 369.
Appearance
Barn’s youthful appearance persists for decades because of the Life Fruit, even as his bearing becomes that of an experienced fighter 23 39.
- White hair: Initially silver-white; later shoulder-length and eventually waist-length 11 23 296.
- Pale eyes: Described as vacant or sightless during his blindness. After his sight returns, they retain a pale appearance and can glow with lightning 29 265 365.
- Eye coverings: Commonly wears black ribbons over his eyes; substitutes oversized sunglasses during his auction-house disguise 23 166.
- Ghost Hand: A grotesque dark-red left arm with inscriptions and malformed bones. Its runes glow during attacks 25 173 369.
- Clothing: Wears a silver-white coat early on, later a black-and-white short-sleeved shirt and the Snake God’s Fang necklace 9 23.
- Thunder God form: His loose hair moves without wind, electricity flashes across his skin, and his voice becomes flat and electronically distorted 296.
Personality
Barn is playful, irreverent, and quick to exploit an opening. Early on, he uses invented tragedies and feigned helplessness to win Brook’s sympathy and avoid walking. His teasing continues with Whitebeard, Rayleigh, his disciples, and powerful opponents 4 26 35 276.
Freedom and chosen family shape his loyalties. Sako’s death initially makes him reject piracy, but his reconciliation with York turns that grief into a commitment to live freely. Decades later, Moria’s youthful ideals move him because they recall York’s invitation to pursue freedom 9 10 66.
His compassion does not make him gentle toward everyone. He rescues slaves, mentors vulnerable children, and spends lifespan healing strangers, yet kills traffickers’ associates, Celestial Dragons, and other enemies without hesitation. He distinguishes individuals rather than accepting Zephyr’s blanket condemnation of pirates 29 166 167 168 247.
Barn enjoys testing himself against strong opponents and often conceals information about his abilities. He also recognizes that caution cannot become an excuse for inaction, although revenge can cloud his judgment 29 85 92 156.
His independence repeatedly conflicts with his attachments. He leaves companions behind to keep them safe, but worries that his notoriety will expose them to a Buster Call. His farewells to Adam, Lia, Hancock, and Rayleigh reveal affection, guilt, and uncertainty about his own survival 162 311 330 336.
Abilities & Skills
DNF System
Barn’s abilities originate from an incomplete DNF system that accompanied his transmigration 64.
- Combat grants experience and raises his level 11 17.
- SP purchases skills; equipping a weapon is necessary to activate them 6.
- The interface includes attributes, weapon slots, passive skills, an Awakening skill, and a mailbox for quest rewards 6 17 26.
- Whitebeard’s recognition becomes Proof of the Strong, filling one Awakening requirement 26.
- Barn anticipates major benefits from reaching levels 50 and 85, but those statements are expectations—not documented level achievements 17.
Mind’s Eye and Danger Sense
Mind’s Eye compensates for Barn’s blindness by detecting living presences. Danger Sense is described by the system as an evolved form of Observation Haki 23.
- At maximum investment, living creatures appear as red outlines without recognizable faces 23.
- Detects hostility and approaching danger, helping him block surprise attacks and track opponents 4 154 178.
- Originally cannot reveal inanimate objects, leaving Barn dependent on Fitz for daily navigation and unusual terrain 23.
- Cannot initially locate Kizaru inside his awakened photon field; Barn must infer the technique’s weakness and disrupt it with Haki 327.
Life Fruit
The Life Fruit preserves Barn’s youth, repairs injuries, and provides limited resurrection opportunities 17 23 274.
- Healing: Repairs internal injuries and closes major wounds with a green glow 30 40.
- Hyper regeneration: At the threshold of Awakening, regrows severed limbs 154 268 327.
- Life Return: A passive skill Barn believes revived him after the plague. He interprets its counter as a limited-use ability 17.
- Healing others: Revives the fallen Razor Claw Four Fists sufficiently to recover and heals wounded Shandia by sacrificing his own lifespan 219 247.
- Limits: Repeated severe injuries slow his regeneration and leave him weakened. Bodily healing does not repair the soul damage caused by ghost power 155 156 187.
- Sea vulnerability: Falling into the sea remains potentially fatal despite his healing abilities 196.
Haki and Murderous Intent
Aishi’s training develops Barn’s Armament and Observation Haki; his Conqueror’s Haki awakens later against Capulias 23 101 102.
- Armament Haki: Reinforces his body and weapons, cushions heavy blows, and enables direct attacks against powerful opponents 30 327.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Incapacitates nearly all of a force of 3,000 pirates and selectively overwhelms Ain while sparing her life 172 196.
- Elemental disruption: Uses Conqueror’s Haki to disturb Kizaru’s photon field and expose his true body 327.
- Murderous Intent Wave: A separate aura of pure killing intent, originally distinguished from Haki. It later cancels the bald Elder’s Conqueror’s Haki during their clash 11 154.
Swordsmanship and Wave Techniques
Years of training make Barn an outstanding swordsman beyond the techniques supplied by his system. His combat emphasizes weapon skill and abilities rather than raw physical strength 64 295.
| Technique | Application or Limit |
|---|---|
| Triple Slash | Three successive sliding sword movements used to enter the battle against Planck 9. |
| Moonlight Slash | Alternating sword strikes capable of cutting arrows approaching from different directions 20. |
| Ground Wave Sword | Finishes Planck and later blasts apart Kaido’s clamped muscles to free Barn’s blade 9 186. |
| Asura Evil Light Slash | Signature large-scale slash, capable of severing warships. Its early charged form consumes substantial energy; Barn later performs it without charging and adds lightning 29 90 198 269. |
| Evil Light Wave Formation | Forcibly traps an opponent within a barrier of evil light 17 29. |
| Wave Explosion / Wave Burst | Releases a close-range blast that repels attackers or projectiles. A later lightning-enhanced version manifests as a lion 173 268 295. |
| Rippling Wave Slash | Breaks through Zephyr’s Armament Haki 30. |
| Immovable Wisdom King Formation | Three enormous black spheres pull in, batter, and blast away the target 30. |
| Ghost Seal Bead | A projectile supplied largely by Wave Insignia energy; later versions carry lightning or ghost attacks 90 295 369. |
| Extreme Ice Wave Sword | Freezes opponents and equipment; Saya’s empowerment makes it effective against Kaido 155 187 196. |
| Extreme Flame Wave Sword | Encloses an opponent in fire or releases a powerful flame attack 155 197. |
| Dark Sky Wave Eye | Awakening technique that creates absolute darkness and deprives opponents of senses. Garp is able to break into the domain 156 197. |
Ghost Hand and Spirit Control
Barn’s cursed left hand links him to Kazaan and other ghosts. Their power initially threatens his bodily autonomy; later, he suppresses and commands spirits using barriers and lightning restraints 102 113 269.
| Spirit | Documented Contribution |
|---|---|
| Kazaan | Barn’s strongest summoned ghost; supplies destructive offensive power and blood energy for Outrage Break 187 269. |
| Kalla | Absorbs most of Kaido’s attack, preventing serious injury 187. |
| Saya | Empowers freezing attacks and helps create an Ice Wall 187 269. |
| Prey | Envelops Kaido and puts him to sleep; later weakens the bald Elder 187 369. |
| John | Combines fire with Saya’s ice to stop the Elder’s sword attack 269. |
| Blade | Supplies shadow-blade attacks and extends the reach of Barn’s sword 328 369. |
- Kazaan’s possession produces overlapping voices, red mist, scarlet eyes, and techniques such as Great Dark Sky and Blood Sword 102 105.
- Ghost empowerment can severely damage Barn’s soul and drain his life force 187 188 269.
- The summoned spirits’ lightning collars are restraints, not signs of freely given cooperation 269.
- After recovering his shadow on Thriller Bark, Barn imprisons Kazaan in a lightning torture space for secretly draining his power 296.
Thunder God Techniques
Barn’s later combat incorporates lightning into his movement, sword attacks, summons, and spirit restraints 267 268 269.
- Thunder God’s Breath: Produces an emotionless transformation with intensified electrical power 296.
- Lightning movement: Matches Kizaru’s attempted escape before the admiral reveals his Awakening 326.
- Heavenly Thunder Wave Sword: Draws down lightning and confines Zephyr within an electrical circle and curtain 296.
- Demon-Subduing Vajra: A lightning-charged weapon summoned from storm clouds; can knock Garp away and expand under additional lightning 268 326.
- Thunder God Asura Slash: His decisive killing attack against the bald Elder 369.
Movement, Mentorship, and Leadership
- Soru: Uses rapid movement to evade attacks and close on opponents 186 172.
- Geppo: Remains airborne to avoid falling into the sea. He learned it from former Marines under his protection 196.
- Enhanced senses: Identifies Fisher Tiger through scent and recognizes combat movements by sound 35 172.
- Instruction: Teaches Adam swordsmanship and Sword Soul skills from his memories; guides Ace through Roger’s legacy 35 64 135.
- Organization: Directs the FFF Guild, recruits powerful allies, delegates work to Adam and Leonard, and coordinates operations with Dragon 92 199 201 276.
