Background / History

Academy and the Uchiha Massacre

Sasuke initially attends Iruka’s class alongside Yemu, Naruto, Sakura, and Qingxue. Proud of his clan, he resents Qingxue’s devotion to a Hyuga Branch Family member and treats Yemu’s popularity as a challenge to his own standing 2 5.

The Uchiha massacre destroys his family and changes his behavior sharply. Itachi subjects him to Tsukuyomi, forcing him to repeatedly witness his parents’ murders. When Sasuke returns to class a week later, he is withdrawn, hostile, and focused on becoming strong enough to kill his brother 16.

Finding Qingxue alive briefly makes him feel less alone. That relief becomes anger when she appears cheerful rather than grief-stricken. He accuses her of lacking loyalty to their clan, rejects Sakura’s sympathy, and challenges Yemu because he believes Yemu has led Qingxue astray 16.

Rivalry with Yemu

Iruka supervises their first post-massacre duel. Sasuke opens with shuriken, then continues fighting with his one-tomoe Sharingan after Yemu sends him flying with a short-range strike. Yemu defeats him decisively. Sasuke nevertheless accepts his offered hand, forms the Reconciliation Seal, and promises to win their next match 17 18.

During Team 7’s Land of Waves mission, Sasuke fights alongside Naruto against Zabuza’s water clone and is injured. He then witnesses a mysterious white-robed ninja—Yemu in disguise—overwhelm Zabuza. Unable to identify him, Sasuke makes surpassing that stranger another measure of the strength he needs to defeat Itachi 33 34 37.

Before the Chunin Exams, Sasuke challenges Yemu again. His fireball, shuriken, and taijutsu all fail. He asks to learn Yemu’s Great Dragon Fire Technique, but Yemu refuses to teach him and directs him to his instructor instead 37.

His frustration also affects encounters outside their duels. He aggressively attacks Kankuro during the confrontation over Konohamaru, seeks Kabuto’s information on Yemu, and pursues Dosu in the Forest of Death despite Sakura’s warning 38 43 53.

Itachi Confrontation and Departure

In Kumogakure, Sasuke spots Itachi and charges at him despite the surrounding battle. He demands an explanation for the massacre, but Itachi answers cruelly and repeatedly overwhelms him. Sasuke’s Sharingan reaches three tomoe during the beating; Yemu eventually intervenes, and a Shadow Clone frees Sasuke from genjutsu so he can rejoin the Konoha squad 98 99 100.

Afterward, Sasuke confronts Yemu at night and demands an unrestricted fight. Even his combined Fire and Lightning Release cannot close the gap. Defeated again, he announces that he will leave Konoha to seek answers about his brother and clan, obtain greater power, and find a path beyond Yemu’s shadow. Yemu warns him about the consequences but does not stop him 107.

Sasuke subsequently appears with Orochimaru, watching Yemu’s battles and undergoing treatment or experimentation in his laboratory. He questions Orochimaru’s decision to oppose Yemu, recognizing how dangerous that opposition is. After the confrontation with Madara, he withdraws with Orochimaru’s group and Sound Ninja 125 129 145.

Six Paths Conflict

The Sage of Six Paths grants Sasuke power, expecting him to help resist Yemu. Sasuke instead waits and assesses the battlefield. The Sage later tells Naruto that Sasuke obtained the power without truly agreeing to cooperate and then disappeared 172 175.

Sasuke eventually intervenes when Yemu is about to strike Naruto, using Amenotejikara and Susanoo to intercept the attack. He explains that the Sage has threatened to reclaim his power, making intervention necessary from his perspective 184.

Although he joins Naruto, Sasuke rejects the idea that he is fighting for Naruto’s ideals or their old promise. He believes Yemu has surpassed Kaguya and doubts that their Six Paths sealing technique can contain him. Nevertheless, he refuses to accept Yemu’s rule and intends to reshape the shinobi order himself 185.

Their coordinated attacks fail repeatedly. Yemu dismisses Amaterasu, destroys Susanoo with a spatial slash, and injures Sasuke through its defenses. Sasuke continues fighting with a Six Paths-enhanced Susanoo alongside Naruto 185 186.

Return and the Imperial Transition

By the imperial transition, Sasuke has returned to Konoha. His record remains contentious: Tsunade notes his desertion and involvement in nearly destroying the village, while Kakashi argues that his strength, decisiveness, and lack of personal hesitation make him suitable for a critical mission 194.

Sasuke kills the Land of Fire’s Daimyo and his guards during negotiations. Naruto arrives too late to prevent the slaughter and condemns him, but Sasuke leaves without remorse. The killings occur amid the wider removal of national Daimyo that enables Yemu’s political and economic reforms 195.

In a later arena match, Sasuke faces Kurotsuchi. He evades her Earth Release attacks, counters with Great Fireball, and manifests a purple Susanoo when her stone spikes converge on him. The supplied account does not establish the match’s final result 203 204.

Appearance

  • Hair: Short black hair, with bangs that sometimes obscure his eyes 107 185.
  • Expression: Usually cold or impassive; after the massacre, his eyes are described as hollow and filled with revenge 16 185.
  • Eyes: Displays successive Sharingan forms and later a purple Rinnegan 17 71 99 166 185.
  • Later attire: Wears robes and a cloak during his departure and subsequent association with Orochimaru 107 125.

Personality

Sasuke’s pride predates the massacre. He is conscious of Uchiha status, contemptuous of Qingxue’s attachment to Yemu, and unwilling to be eclipsed by a Hyuga Branch Family member. After losing his family, that pride becomes entwined with grief: he refuses pity and treats revenge as his reason to continue living 2 5 16.

He trains persistently and repeatedly challenges stronger opponents, but frustration often overrides judgment. He pursues Dosu despite the danger to his team and charges at Itachi in the middle of a hostile village. Humiliation usually renews his determination rather than persuading him to retreat 37 53 98.

His protectiveness is selective rather than absent. He backs Naruto against Zabuza’s clone and prevents Sakura from approaching Qingxue after sensing her killing intent. At other times, he dismisses Sakura as weak or rejects her concern harshly 18 33 86.

Later, Sasuke becomes more calculating and openly self-interested. He preserves the power granted by the Sage, opposes Yemu according to his own vision of order, and kills the Daimyo without hesitation. His contemptuous treatment of Kurotsuchi shows that increased strength has not softened his arrogance 184 185 195 203.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

  • Uses the Sharingan during repeated duels with Yemu, though improved eyes do not overcome the difference in their strength 17 99.
  • Tracks and evades Kurotsuchi’s stone pillars with movements described as making the world appear slower 203.
  • Remains vulnerable to Itachi’s genjutsu despite possessing the Sharingan 16 100.
  • Amaterasu: Uses black flames against Yemu; Yemu dismisses them effortlessly 185.

Rinnegan: Amenotejikara

  • Instantly exchanges matter or positions through Amenotejikara 184.
  • Uses the exchange to remove Naruto from Yemu’s immediate attack and take his place behind Susanoo’s defense 184.
  • The exchange is described as impossible to interrupt, but the resulting interception still leaves his Susanoo blade cracking under Yemu’s weapon 184.

Susanoo

  • Manifests a purple Perfect Susanoo hundreds of meters tall, with four blade-wielding arms and wings 181.
  • Uses its blade to block Yemu’s Dragon Blade and combines its attacks with Naruto’s Six Paths Rasenshuriken 184 185.
  • Later displays a Six Paths-enhanced form with four wings, an Amaterasu Black Flame Bow, and a Lightning Release Sword 186.
  • Cannot reliably withstand Yemu: its blade cracks, its complete structure is shattered, and Yemu penetrates its defenses 184 185.
  • Uses Susanoo to withstand Kurotsuchi’s converging stone attack 204.

Fire and Lightning Release

  • Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique: Uses against Yemu, Kankuro, and Kurotsuchi 37 38 203.
  • Combines Fire and Lightning Release during his final duel with Yemu before leaving Konoha 107.
  • Forms a Lightning Release spear entwined with Amaterasu’s black flames while inside Perfect Susanoo 181.

Taijutsu, Movement, and Shurikenjutsu

  • Learns shuriken throwing ahead of his classmates under Itachi’s guidance 17.
  • Coordinates shuriken with direct attacks and uses attached threads during his confrontation with Itachi 17 99.
  • Uses the Body Flicker Technique to close distance, including a surprise kick against Kankuro 38 99.
  • Holds his own against two opponents simultaneously in the Forest of Death 53.
  • Remains consistently outmatched by Yemu in close combat, even after requesting an unrestricted duel 17 37 107.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shuriken and attached threads — Used to support charges, restrict movement, and coordinate attacks 17 37 99.
  • Transplanted eyes from Itachi — Orochimaru confirms the transplant occurred before Sasuke ceased contacting him 175.

Relationships

  • Itachi Uchiha — Older brother, former shuriken instructor, and principal target of revenge. Itachi’s massacre and Tsukuyomi traumatize Sasuke; their later confrontation also triggers his three-tomoe awakening 16 17 99.
  • Yemu Hyuga — Classmate, recurring rival, rescuer, and eventual political opponent. Sasuke measures his progress against Yemu, while Yemu respects his decision to leave Konoha rather than forcibly stopping him 17 37 100 107 185.
  • Qingxue Uchiha — Fellow clan survivor whose attachment to Yemu and apparent lack of mourning anger him. Her faster Sharingan development repeatedly wounds his pride 16 38 71.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Team 7 teammate and reluctant combat partner. Sasuke fights beside him against Zabuza and later Yemu, but rejects Naruto’s idealism; the Daimyo’s killing causes another moral clash 33 185 195.
  • Sakura Haruno — Teammate and admirer. She defends him and repeatedly seeks help for him despite his rejection of her sympathy; Sasuke also protects her from approaching a dangerous Qingxue 16 18 86 98 99.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Team 7 instructor. Sasuke complains that his missions are merely errands; Kakashi later supports entrusting him with a critical assignment despite his past crimes 37 194.
  • Orochimaru — Associate during Sasuke’s missing-nin period. Sasuke appears in his laboratory and withdraws with his group, but later stops contacting him after receiving Itachi’s eyes 125 129 145 175.
  • Sage of Six Paths — Grants Sasuke power expecting cooperation against Yemu. Sasuke initially avoids that obligation, then intervenes when threatened with losing the power 172 175 184.
  • Kurotsuchi — Arena opponent. Sasuke dismisses her courtesy, counters her Earth Release, and uses Susanoo against her strongest documented attack 203 204.
