Power Progression
Lee’s Gates are temporary combat states, not permanent ranks. The table records their first documented use and later assessments.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Genin-level taijutsu specialist | 42 43 | Yemu considers him impressive by genin standards, praising his speed and strength while judging his technique to be still developing. |
| Third Gate | 58 | Kakashi identifies the initial transformation by Lee’s reddened skin and green chakra glow before he opens higher Gates. |
| Fourth Gate — Gate of Pain | 58 | Opens against Yemu’s clone disguised as Qingxue. The increase in speed lets him launch his opponent into the air for a Lotus-style assault. |
| Fifth Gate — Gate of Limit | 58 | Opens during the aerial combination. His speed surpasses the speed of sound, but the clone still counters and defeats him. |
| Jonin rank; Sixth Gate — Gate of View | 173 200 201 | Explicitly identified as a jonin while opening the Gate to help Naruto. Later uses it against Neji; his resulting power is described as far beyond an ordinary jonin’s. |
| Seventh Gate — Gate of Wonder | 201 202 | Opens after Neji reflects Morning Peacock. Blue chakra and steam accompany power assessed as approaching Kage level, though Lee admits he has not fully mastered the Gate. |
| Eighth Gate threshold — blood-red state | 202 203 | Stops at the brink of fully opening the fatal Gate, then unleashes a brief red-aura assault that severely injures Neji. Lee collapses with ruptured chakra pathways and rapidly fading life force; full Eighth Gate activation is not explicitly confirmed. |
Appearance
- Green outfit: Wears the same style of green clothing as Might Guy 41 42.
- Bowl-cut hair and thick eyebrows: Prompt Naruto’s “bushy-browed” and “bowl cut” descriptions 41 59.
- Characteristic gesture: Frequently gives a thumbs-up while flashing bright white teeth 41 42.
- Gate transformations: Higher Gates redden his skin and produce green chakra, blue chakra and steam, or blood-red mist as he approaches the fatal threshold 58 200 201 202.
Personality
Lee wants to prove that ordinary people can rival or surpass geniuses through relentless work. Neji has been his benchmark since childhood, and Lee treats taijutsu as the foundation of his identity. His daily training includes weighted runs and punishing practice under Guy 42 200.
His exuberance does not make him immune to discouragement. Yemu’s overwhelming taijutsu victory leaves him devastated, while his impending tournament match against Neji makes him anxious. Guy’s encouragement repeatedly restores his confidence 42 43 200.
Lee is courteous toward opponents, asking the apparent Qingxue to fight seriously and warning her to concede if she cannot withstand his unweighted strength. That consideration coexists with dangerous stubbornness: he refuses to surrender after his body can no longer fight and later risks his life to surpass his limits against Neji 56 57 59 202.
His loyalty remains strong even when former comrades become potential enemies. He hopes Yemu can return peacefully to Konoha and immediately joins Guy in rushing to protect Naruto from Madara’s extraction chains 159 173.
Abilities & Skills
Taijutsu and Jeet Kune Do
Lee fights primarily through physical combat and takes a Jeet Kune Do stance when challenging Yemu 42.
- Konoha Whirlwind: An airborne spinning-kick attack. By the selection tournament, his barrage can shatter boulders and crack the arena floor 42 200.
- Rapid combinations: Exchanges more than a hundred blows with Yemu and later with Neji 42 201.
- Endurance: Continues fighting after repeated heavy impacts and even forces himself upright after Neji’s chakra-point barrage 200 201 202.
- Technical limitation: Yemu initially judges his technique less developed than his physical attributes. Years later, Neji’s force-redirection and chakra-disruption techniques still neutralize much of his offense 43 201.
High-Speed Movement
Lee’s movement is repeatedly described as the Body Flicker Technique or body-flickering taijutsu 41 58 200.
- His initial speed surprises Sasuke and Naruto 41.
- Removing his weights produces afterimages and movement beyond ordinary genin’s ability to follow 57 58.
- His speed does not guarantee an advantage: Yemu, Yemu’s disguised clone, and Neji all successfully read or counter his attacks 42 58 201.
Eight Gates of Death
Guy teaches Lee the forbidden technique, allowing him to force open his body’s chakra restrictions for drastic increases in physical power 58.
- Higher Gates amplify his speed, strength, and the pressure generated by his attacks 58 200 201.
- The Fifth Gate leaves him with torn muscles after the Chunin preliminaries 59.
- Approaching the Eighth Gate burns through his life and damages his body; his tournament assault ends with collapsed chakra circulation and ruptured pathways 202 203.
- His Seventh Gate remains incompletely mastered when he fights Neji 202.
Lotus-Style Grappling
Lee uses bandages to restrain opponents and combine aerial launches with high-speed strikes 58.
- Attempts a Lotus-style aerial combination against the apparent Qingxue before her blade cuts through his bindings 58.
- Later forms bandages from gathered chakra, binds Neji’s waist and arms, and drives a flying knee into his guard 201.
Morning Peacock
A rapid barrage that generates flames through friction 201.
- Uses it against Neji during the tournament.
- Neji’s Rotation blocks the barrage and reflects the flames back at him 201.
Ninja Beast Combination Technique
Lee says he had learned this technique when he previously considered challenging Yemu. Its partner, mechanics, and combat effects are not described 159.
Ninjutsu and Genjutsu Limitations
- Guy explicitly describes Lee as unable to use ninjutsu or genjutsu and reliant on taijutsu 57.
- He cannot use Shadow Clones to multiply his training time 60.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Iron training weights: Worn around his ankles and later described more broadly as weights on his body. Their removal significantly increases his speed; their impact gouges the arena floor 57 200.
- Bandages: Used to bind opponents during Lotus-style attacks 58.
Relationships
- Might Guy — Teacher and principal source of encouragement. Trains Lee relentlessly, teaches him the Eight Gates, and supports his convictions while fearing the consequences of his self-destructive efforts 43 58 200 202 203.
- Neji Hyuga — Teammate, childhood companion, and long-standing rival. Lee names him as the genius he has always chased; their tournament fight ends with Neji acknowledging his strength and carrying him to the infirmary 41 200 203.
- Tenten — Teammate who watches his early defeats and becomes distraught over his critical tournament injuries 41 42 59 203.
- Yemu Hyuga — Overwhelming opponent and eventual source of medical aid. Defeats Lee in taijutsu, treats his preliminary-match injuries, and later promises to save him when Tsunade’s treatment proves insufficient 42 59 203.
- Qingxue Uchiha — Rejects Lee’s immediate romantic confession. He later fights Yemu’s clone disguised as her in the Chunin preliminaries and confronts the real Qingxue during a separate conflict 41 56 87.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Fellow Konoha shinobi whom Lee rushes to protect from Madara. Naruto later enthusiastically praises his Seventh Gate transformation 173 201.
- Tsunade — Examines Lee after his match with Neji and recognizes that his injuries are beyond what her ongoing treatment can reverse 203.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chunin Exams
Lee arrives at the Academy with Neji and Tenten, immediately confesses to Qingxue, and is rejected. Yemu’s remark about strong people not being shackled by feelings reignites his enthusiasm 41.
He subsequently challenges Yemu at the Academy’s sparring arena. Yemu wins through taijutsu alone, stopping a punch short of Lee’s face; its shockwave leaves a hole several meters wide in a nearby wall. Lee’s confidence falters until Guy teaches him to treat failure as a reason to grow stronger 42 43.
In the preliminaries, Lee faces what he believes is Qingxue, actually Yemu’s remotely controlled Shadow Clone. Despite removing his weights and opening the Fifth Gate, he loses and collapses. Yemu treats his torn muscles, with recovery expected in roughly ten days 56 57 58 59.
Conflict with Qingxue
Lee joins Shikamaru and Neji in approaching Qingxue over her confrontation with Naruto. His attempted attack is predicted and countered by her sword, after which her red chains cut off his escape 87.
War and Changing Loyalties
After witnessing Yemu overpower the Akatsuki, Lee abandons thoughts of challenging him and chooses to concentrate on training. When a later coalition prepares to oppose Yemu, Lee instead voices hope for a peaceful settlement 126 159.
During Madara’s tailed-beast extraction, Lee opens the Sixth Gate and rushes to Naruto’s aid alongside Guy. He is subsequently badly injured by the shockwave of a fire dragon attack 173 174.
Ten Strongest Generals Selection
Lee travels to the Land of Iron with Konoha’s delegation for the tournament whose chosen ten fighters will command the shinobi world’s ten legions. His assigned opponent is Neji 197 198.
Neji initially controls their match, countering Lee’s speed and power through refined taijutsu. Lee escalates from the Sixth to the Seventh Gate, then approaches the Eighth Gate after Neji’s Yang Release Chakra Mode overwhelms him 200 201 202.
His final blood-red assault lasts only ten-odd seconds but nearly cripples Neji. Lee’s body gives out first. Neji carries him to the infirmary, where Tsunade finds catastrophic damage; Yemu’s promise to save him restores the group’s hope without a completed recovery being shown 203.
