Knock, knock-knock!
Hidden in Toran's rhythmic knocking was a code unique to the Inner River God Cult.
The contact inside the room immediately called out-
"Who is it?
If you're looking for Miss Gwen, please come back tonight.
She needs to work for Mr. Hux during the day."
This was the second part of the code.
Miss Gwen did indeed exist. She owned this house and was also a highly respected Benevolent Woman. Not only could she read and do arithmetic, but she could also prepare herbal remedies. She ordinarily served as Mr. Hux's Family Consultant, helping his wife manage their three children in a role akin to a nanny and tutor combined.
Thus, there was nothing suspicious about those words.
What truly mattered was the reply.
"All right, I understand that Miss Gwen needs to work for Mr. Hux.
But I would still like to meet with you."
Toran gave his answer.
The door opened.
The man who opened it was Miss Gwen's husband, Mr. Gwen.
He publicly claimed to be a historian, but was actually a Hidden Pawn of the Inner River God Cult.
"Hello, Lord Toran."
Mr. Gwen greeted him warmly.
Dressed in trousers and a shirt, with glasses on his face, Mr. Gwen had curly red hair and a clean face, but his palms were rough, and traces of ink stained his fingertips.
This always made Toran uncomfortable when they shook hands.
He always felt that they were a little dirty.
Dirtier than the clothes he was wearing.
Earlier, while hurrying here, the priest of the Inner River God Cult had been able to endure it. Now that he was safe, however, he could no longer bear it.
