Rainbow Company
Cheng Yu looked helplessly at the visibly excited Li Ming, who paced back and forth across the office before giving him a suspicious look.
"Little Yu, your uncle's always treated you well, hasn't he?"
Cheng Yu was completely baffled, but he answered honestly.
"Yes. I owe everything I've achieved to your support, Uncle Li."
Li Ming nodded in satisfaction, then spoke with a hint of reproach.
"Little Yu, that's where you went wrong. Why didn't you tell me sooner that you knew Mr. You?"
Cheng Yu inwardly grumbled, I only met him last night. How was I supposed to tell you? But all he could do was give a wry smile.
"Uncle, who could've known? Who could've guessed that the person who sponsored a poor student's education back then would turn out to be Mr. You? All I did was help someone gather up some luggage he'd dropped.
"Then he told me that good people would be rewarded. I didn't think much of it. After that, an anonymous Mr. Y sponsored my university education."
Yes, the big shot had told him to fill in the details himself. The gist was simply that the big shot was his benefactor.
Li Ming clapped his hands and laughed.
"Well, good people really do get rewarded! You're Rainbow's lucky star! You have no idea-this morning, I'd only just gotten up when my secretary called. She said Universal International had called to ask whether you worked here.
"At first, I thought we'd offended someone. Who knew they'd go on to say that Mr. You would be arriving in Jiangcheng at noon today, and that he'd specifically asked you to pick him up?"
Cheng Yu's inner commentary went into overdrive. Right, this morning he still had no legal identity, and a second later he's a major shareholder in Universal International. He was at my place this morning, and now I have to go to the airport at noon to pick him up.
All he could say was that a big shot was a big shot. Don't ask. If he could play around with the rules themselves, how could a bunch of mortals be any harder?
As for why Li Ming was so excited, Cheng Yu understood that too. Even Rainbow Company's biggest recent contract, the university town project, had been coordinated with them by a department in a subsidiary of one of Universal International's subordinate companies.
He had accompanied Li Ming to negotiate that contract, and the other side had only sent a department head.
Cheng Yu had always known about Universal International. Under the new world order after the war, many companies had gone bankrupt. To rise again, dozens upon dozens of companies had jointly registered a headquarters called Universal International.
That was right. Rather than a company, Universal International was more like a joint chamber of commerce for all the globally recognizable companies, each of which had automatically become a subordinate company.
And until this morning, that chamber of commerce had never had any so-called major individual shareholder. All of Universal International's shares had been held by twelve large corporate groups and ninety-three smaller ones.
But when he checked just now, Mr. Yog alone held fifteen percent of its shares. That meant Mr. You's personal wealth exceeded the combined total output of several underdeveloped countries.
Well, he's a big shot. Makes sense.
Mr. You was coming to Jiangcheng. The news instantly sent the city's upper circles into a frenzy. Of course, ordinary people also knew that someone important was coming.
But did that affect their monthly salary of three thousand? At most, they would say, "Oh, he's pretty famous," then go right back to work.
Noon finally arrived, and Cheng Yu spotted Lin Mo among the people waiting to welcome the arrivals. He wasn't surprised in the slightest. It would have been downright bizarre if that asshole hadn't come. Still, the asshole wasn't acting up today and had actually dressed like a respectable human being.
Lin Mo naturally saw Cheng Yu too, but Cheng Yu wasn't what occupied his mind right now.
He had come for two reasons. First, to steal Cheng Yu's opportunity-he still believed Cheng Yu was this plane's protagonist. This Mr. You was clearly Cheng Yu's greatest opportunity. Even if Lin Mo couldn't steal it, he had to ruin it for him.
Second, he had come to pick up his deputy, Le Shuya. She was capable, beautiful, and had a great figure. He had been lusting after her for ages. Some time ago, he had sent her overseas to negotiate a deal for him. Last night, she had told him the deal was settled, so he had come personally to pick her up as a show of sincerity.
Not long after the plane landed, Yog and a female assistant beside him strolled out through the VIP passage. Cheng Yu immediately went up to greet him with a broad smile.
"Thank you for making the trip, Mr. You, and thank you so much for sponsoring my education. I'll never forget your kindness. Please give me a chance to host you tonight and welcome you properly."
Yog delivered an award-winning performance of his own, warmly patting Cheng Yu's shoulder with a smile. "There's no need for all that. I told you that good people would be rewarded. Everything you've achieved today is thanks to your own efforts. Still, I really will have to let you host me tonight."
"You're too kind. This way, sir."
As they walked, Cheng Yu asked him silently,
Big shot, what exactly are you playing at here?
Tell me, if you were Lin Mo, how would you feel seeing this? Look through the script on the way. It's changed. But since I caused the changes, only my part has changed. Everything else remains the same.
That's good. That's good. Cheng Yu breathed a sigh of relief. Yes, what he had always feared was the script changing in ways he couldn't control. It had changed, but for the better, giving him more opportunities to mess with Lin Mo's head.
The people around them were quite surprised to see Cheng Yu chatting and laughing with Mr. You. Then came a wave of belated fear. Thankfully, they had never offended Cheng Yu.
From now on, they would have to build a good relationship with Cheng Yu instead. And judging by the situation, none of them could get a word in anyway. Better to leave and sound Cheng Yu out later.
Cheng Yu was in a wonderful mood. Some other people weren't feeling nearly as good-Lin Mo, for instance.
He had heard it clearly: Cheng Yu and Mr. You were old acquaintances, so it wouldn't be appropriate to interrupt. But then an idea struck him, and he instructed one of his men,
"Follow that car and see which restaurant they go to."
His subordinate nodded and went after them.
Then Lin Mo immediately put on a smiling face, because Le Shuya had arrived.
She wore black stockings, high heels, and a black office suit, her long black hair pinned up neatly. Her rimless glasses, curvaceous figure, and exquisite features drew plenty of second glances. Seeing Lin Mo waiting to pick her up, she gave him an utterly alluring smile.
"Sorry for the trouble, President Lin. You didn't need to come pick me up yourself."
Lin Mo smiled too. "My star performer is back. How could I not come? Besides, it feels like it's been ages since I last saw you. I've missed you."
Le Shuya rolled her eyes at him, then grew serious. "President Lin, I heard Mr. You also arrived in Jiangcheng today. You need to seize this opportunity. If you can establish a connection with him, it'll be worth more than a hundred deals I could bring in."
Lin Mo smiled confidently. "Of course. I already have a plan." Just then, a message arrived from his subordinate.
"President Lin, the car you asked me to follow went to Binzhi Restaurant, then headed straight to the Lihao Hotel. I just went in and asked. Cheng Yu booked their highest-tier banquet."
Lin Mo smiled at Le Shuya. "Talk about getting exactly what I wanted. Shuya, come to Binzhi Restaurant with me tonight."
Although Le Shuya was puzzled, she agreed. "All right."
A little earlier.
Cheng Yu looked at the script in his hand and laughed.
"That asshole isn't actually stupid. But the information gap is right there. Tsk, tsk. I've got the advantage."
He then tossed the script into the system's built-in storage space and turned to Yog.
"Big shot, where would you like to go next?"
"Anywhere. I'll leave the arrangements to you. I'm only making a cameo. Once today's scene is over, I'll be going back to the audience." Yog looked utterly unconcerned.
"All right. I'll make sure you get your fill of acting today."
Inside an elegantly furnished private dining room, Yog and Cheng Yu sat opposite each other across a round table. Behind Yog stood a woman with striking, handsome features, her hair in a ponytail and her body clad in a suit.
Cheng Yu had seen her at the airport, but hadn't asked much then. Later, in the car, he had wanted to tentatively ask who she was. Seeing her so close to the genuine big shot, he had assumed she must be someone formidable herself-at least by his standards.
But the genuine big shot's simple answer-"A highly intelligent puppet I made shortly after you left"-had made Cheng Yu swallow his questions. Well, she was formidable too. After all, the genuine big shot had made her personally. He would believe it if someone told him she could destroy a planet.
Just then, Li Ming called. Cheng Yu glanced at Yog across the table. Yog shrugged to show that he didn't mind, so Cheng Yu answered.
Then all that could be heard was,
"All right. Mm-hmm. All right, I know, I know. He said he was only passing through. All right, I'll mention it to him. Okay, don't worry, Uncle Li. All right. Mm-hmm. Okay, then. I'll hang up now."
Cheng Yu let out a deep breath. "Whew. That was exhausting."
From the other side of the round table, Yog smiled. "What, do you want me to join you for an encore?"
Cheng Yu smiled wryly. "I couldn't trouble you with that, big shot. I'll find an excuse to turn him down tomorrow."
"Depends on my mood. Didn't you say you'd let me get my fill of acting? If I'm in a good mood today, I wouldn't mind joining you for an encore tomorrow. Don't worry about the script. I told you, unexpected events caused directly by me will be corrected."
Cheng Yu said nothing more. He knew the big shot was doing him an enormous favor.
Never mind anything else-if even a little news got out that Mr. You had visited Rainbow Company because of him, how much benefit would that bring Rainbow?
And Li Ming had always taken good care of him. He genuinely wanted to repay him too. For a moment, he didn't know what to say.
All he could do was change the subject. "It's about time. Let's eat first. Lin Mo will be here soon."
Yog smiled. "So, are you ready?"
Cheng Yu gave a sinister grin. "I originally thought it would take some effort to turn that woman beside him against him, but the skill I drew this morning is just what I need."
