Background / History
Previous Era
Yog’s original existence was bound to the Previous Era and Azathoth. Although he possessed intelligence, he lacked ordinary rationality and describes his former thought as cold and emotionless. His attempt to acquire rationality failed, but he foresaw Azathoth’s awakening and the resulting disappearance of everything 8.
He participated in Nyarlathotep’s Great Experiment, supplying information and relinquishing control over the testing universe’s space and time. During its final stage, he helped seal the Endless Abyss and became known as its Guardian 14 123.
Yog later reveals that he had suspected attempts to constrain him from the moment he came into existence. He questions Naiog-Sothoth’s supposed role in his birth, M’si Sha’s Time War, and Ghroth’s movements. He believes Ghroth sought the Door of Ultimate Extremity and intended to destroy the Land of the End, condemning him to the Void 194.
Mortal Anchor and Return
The mortal life used as Yog’s anchor was that of a seventy-two-year-old piano professor dying of brain cancer. Having lost his close family early and spent decades devoted to music, the professor reached old age alone. Near death, he favored a doctor’s daughter and donated his body and savings to the doctor’s research in hopes of securing his own future 1.
After death, the professor encountered a vast, many-voiced entity that identified them as the same being. Absorption into its consciousness nearly erased his identity, but a violet-black force preserved enough reason for him to awaken as a young man. He recognized the anchor as part of his own preparations for surviving the end of the multiverse and adopted the name Yog-Sothoth 1.
Avatar and True Self
Yog’s human avatar has preferences, curiosity, and an interest in companionship that his true self does not share. The two can converse as distinct perspectives while remaining one being. His true self calls their activities meaningless; the avatar finds that attitude dull 100 229.
By the New Era, the human avatar exercises unusually extensive authority over the true body. Nyarlathotep describes them as almost two sides of the same coin 197.
Appearance
- Early human disguise: An average-height young man with an unremarkable face, slicked-back hair, and an exquisite black-and-purple suit 2.
- Later presentation: An ordinary-looking middle-aged man, frequently wearing a dark purple suit 120 200 273.
- Forgettable face: Both Wu Juyan and a woman at the bar find his features so ordinary that they seem difficult to remember after looking away 100 120.
- Eyes: Rivers of stars appear in his eyes when he contemplates his plans 128.
- Cosmic manifestation: His presence is associated with nebulae and countless differently colored spheres of light. During his final restoration, his collapsing human body gives way to a vast multicolored orb that settles into black-violet 100 831.
Personality
Yog is composed, dryly humorous, and difficult to provoke. He neither demands worship nor resents Cheng Yu’s ambition, treating devotion and challenges to his power with similar detachment. His human avatar nevertheless dislikes trouble and appreciates people who provide interesting experiences without burdening him 5 229.
He values the journey more than efficient fragment collection. Knowing an ending diminishes a story’s appeal, so he often withholds information and leaves Cheng Yu to choose his own course. Human emotions interest him particularly because of their instability, despite his stated view that they are useless 8 11 23.
His restraint is not benevolence toward everyone. He can use an entire universe as a component of a ritual, permit a world-threatening attack, or reconstruct a subordinate through an agonizing process. At the same time, he protects those under his care and tells Grete that suffering has no inherent value; its significance lies in what someone chooses afterward 81 123 239 363.
Abilities & Skills
Omniscience and Information Perception
Yog reads worlds, minds, and timelines, converting cosmic knowledge into practical guidance 2 3 4.
- Instantly reads the urban world’s information and identifies the fragments carried by Lin Mo and Cheng Yu 2.
- Supplies Cheng Yu with a supernatural “script” describing people and future events connected to him 4.
- Observes Cheng Yu remotely through books and compares agents across different timelines 89 123 202.
- Limits: Shattered authority leaves some outcomes indeterminate. Damage to time obscures future details, while Azathoth’s power and Nyarlathotep’s schemes can interfere with his sight 2 100 161 194.
- Script limitation: Deliberate changes and unstable fragments can make its predictions diverge from events 4 18.
Time, Space, and Causality
Yog governs spacetime on scales ranging from individual rooms to entire eras 13 123 831.
- Stops time with a spoken command and blocks Cheng Yu’s punch with a spatial barrier 13 38.
- Restores damaged surroundings and reverses the destruction of a fragile world 13 201.
- Moves a universe into the Final Void, severs its parallel planes and timelines, then reconnects it to the Chaos Sea 123.
- Erases a stretch of a lower-dimensional timeline and gives Cheng Yu the resulting blank interval to shape 217.
- Anchors a future that he says cannot be changed even with borrowed powers from Azathoth and Ghroth 273.
- Uses repeated temporal reversals and advances to sever the Supreme Archetype from the Lord of the Era 831.
- Limit: Holding other spacetime continuums in place during His Majesty’s descent strains his human body until it breaks apart 831.
Void Power and Rule-Level Erasure
Yog acquires void power through his true body’s connection to the Final Void 195.
- Void power represents the end of all things and opposes Nyarlathotep’s chaos power, which represents their beginning 195.
- Erases an Epic demon’s body at the level of rules, then deletes and restores the Abyss and nearby universe bubbles during Yuan’s challenge 38.
- Destroys Nyarlathotep’s avatars and removes the chaos surrounding a recovered authority fragment 195.
- After completing his authority, confines the whole New Era and its Lord of the Era 832.
Reconstruction and Conceptual Anchoring
Yog can restore beings from retained information and control the conditions of their existence 24 123.
- Recreates the RXT Supreme Intelligence from preserved data, producing Miss Puppet 24.
- Rebuilds Tsathoggua’s conceptual body and uses San Lorenzo’s universe as the foundation of his return 123.
- Retains control over Tsathoggua’s life and death while also blocking the advancement that could free him 123.
- Transforms the Dog-Headed Demon into Grete’s little-black-dog form and later erases and reconstructs Grete to protect him from assimilation 38 239.
- Annihilates Cheng Yu’s original body and True Name, replacing him with a soul replica matching the original pattern as part of a timeline-switching safeguard 198 202.
Apostle Protection and System Control
Yog controls the authority behind Cheng Yu’s system and grants protections far beyond Cheng Yu’s personal rank 3 5.
- Disables, restores, and redesigns the system into the Strongest Wage Earner System, with achievements, a shop, and paid draws 2 3 5.
- Uses spacetime authority to support the system’s delivery of items and equipment; most other functions originate from Cheng Yu’s earlier system 18.
- Grants an Epic title providing information-contamination resistance, portions of his aura, authority-related protection, and potentially endless life while he continues watching 5.
- Shields Cheng Yu from the Abyssal Will and forbids it from harming him before he reaches Mythic 81.
- Removes Nyarlathotep’s contamination and uses reincarnation, names, and timelines as further safeguards against renewed control 195 198 202.
- Danger of borrowed power: Yog’s aura can induce mutation and insanity across a universe. Using his spatial fragment also drains Cheng Yu’s vitality despite the title’s protection 67 160.
Knowledge as Empowerment
Yog provides knowledge that enables others to overcome technological and supernatural limitations 14 261.
- Explains the Previous Era’s ranking system and its experimental origins 14.
- Grants Cheng Yu the Infinite Technique as a one-time concession 84.
- Gives Miss Puppet knowledge that improves Decoders, resource acquisition, legion units, and her ability to survive through any remaining unit 261.
- Helps Miss Puppet identify a path from Epic toward Mythic, intending to make her strong enough to avoid future trouble 261.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- World books and scripts — Supernatural books used to observe people, histories, and changing timelines. Some books on his shelves emanate the aura of worlds 89 209 399.
- Door / Door Seal — Recovered from the Abyss to restore part of his time and space authority; a black-purple Door Seal can also envelop a universe bubble 38 161.
- Galaxy-bearing bracelet and marble — Holds the sleeping phantom of Tsathoggua before Yog releases it into the void 128 139.
- Authority fragments — Portions of his shattered power, sometimes carried by systems or conscious manifestations. He lends Cheng Yu a spatial fragment for combat 2 160 457.
- Chained black book — A mysterious book restrained by blue-violet chains that provokes intense desire in Cheng Yu, Grete, and Miss Puppet. Its nature is not explained in the supplied account 334.
Relationships
- Cheng Yu — Chosen agent and Apostle. Yog protects and equips him while expecting him to turn their journey into worthwhile stories. He later identifies Cheng Yu as his “only Apostle who reached the end” and chooses him for the Agent War 3 8 202 832.
- Miss Puppet — Recreated Supreme Intelligence, attendant, and beneficiary of his knowledge. Yog takes interest in her personal changes and plans her advancement as a climax of Cheng Yu’s story 24 114 261 316.
- Grete — Former Abyssal servant taken as compensation for Yuan’s offense. Yog frees him from the Abyss, protects him from assimilation, and offers the possibility of future help concerning his master 38 114 239 363.
- Nyarlathotep — Ancient acquaintance, collaborator, and adversarial schemer. Their familiar banter accompanies contests over avatars, fragments, and influence. Yog repeatedly limits Nyarlathotep’s access to his worlds 194 195 238 439.
- Shub-Niggurath — Long-familiar peer whose immense life and immortality authorities make her difficult even for Yog to oppose decisively. Their intimacy coexists with suspicion and disagreement over his concealed plans 212 500 523 827.
- Azathoth — The Previous Era’s supreme being, regarded by Yog as Father. His awakening caused the old multiverse’s end; Yog ultimately declares independence from his power 1 160 195.
- Tsathoggua — Great Old One whose return Yog engineers. Yog keeps decisive control over his existence, then warns him against being exploited by Nyarlathotep 123 139.
- Wu Yuan / Abyssal Will — Former experimental survivor who challenges Yog and is overwhelmingly defeated. Yog designates him as Cheng Yu’s future enemy and restricts when he may attack the Apostle 38 81.
- Tobias — Origin’s spokesman and Yog’s covert collaborator. Helps delay Origin’s maturation, but challenges Yog over apparent disruption of the Chaos Sea’s order 61 438.
- Origin — New Era supreme being secretly eroded by Yog’s true body to delay its growth and limit its control 61 438.
- M’si Sha — Mortal enemy and another Unspeakable being with spacetime authority. Yog associates the conflict with attempts to constrain him 194 245.
- Ghroth — A power Yog connects to Azathoth’s desire to awaken and threats against his existence. Yog later insists that Ghroth remains present because he has permitted it 194 831.
