After the mass arrival of Priests in the Stormwind Kingdom triggered a series of reactions, the farmers' associations established by the Holy Church stirred deep resentment among the kingdom's nobles.
Since when had those filthy commoners been entitled to live like nobles? Although the farmers' associations had brought the nobles considerable profits too, watching those wretches on their estates grow more prosperous by the day only fueled their greed.
One after another, they began finding excuses to forcibly impose all manner of taxes on the people of their estates: clothing taxes, head taxes, even taxes on opening a window or taking a piss. Their endless dirty tricks plunged ordinary people, who had thought their lives were finally improving, into misery.
When the Holy Church learned of this, it did not indulge the nobles. The Holy Light Clerics could overlook nobles collecting legitimate taxes, but whenever nobles dared to levy arbitrary taxes on commoners, the clerics drove away every tax collector they sent. Some nobles flew into a rage and brought their soldiers the very next day to drive the Holy Church out of their estates.
But when they arrived with their soldiers and tried to use force, they discovered that inviting someone in was far easier than forcing them out. Against the Holy Light Clerics' overwhelming strength, the nobles' soldiers were routed almost as soon as they clashed. Even nobles who could afford to hire Mages found that those Mages lasted only a few exchanges against the clerics before dying, their magic extinguished with them. The nobles were so terrified that they scarcely dared to breathe.
