Background / History
During the Warring States era, Madara and Hashirama fought together against numerous beings who claimed to be gods. Their experiences helped shape Madara’s initial contempt for the Holy Church: he dismissed its followers as another cult and regarded reports of Hanzō’s defeat as evidence that the shinobi world had declined 33 108 109.
Madara’s relationship with Hashirama deteriorated over their conflicting answers to suffering. He later described abandoning his hatred after Izuna’s death as something that brought him only loneliness and rejection. He came to believe that an imposed dream world could succeed where the existing world had failed 113.
In old age, Madara selected Obito as his successor because he believed an innocent Uchiha would experience especially powerful despair when his hopes collapsed. He arranged events surrounding Obito’s injuries and Rin’s death, then taught the grieving boy the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan and Yin Release. After entrusting the scheme to Obito, Madara died in his chair 58 71 72 113.
Appearance
Madara’s usual later appearance is a handsome, long-haired man in red plate armor. His Six Paths transformation changes his hair to white and clothes him in white robes 145 153 231 367.
- Elderly body: Numerous tubes protrude from his body during his first appearance 33.
- Sharingan: Scarlet eyes that develop a spinning, pinwheel-like pattern 231.
- Rinnegan: Eyes marked by concentric rings 147.
- Third eye: A nine-tomoe Sharingan opens on his forehead during Infinite Tsukuyomi’s activation 113.
- Susanoo: A blue chakra construct whose complete form resembles a winged samurai carrying a sword 35.
Personality
Madara is proud, combative, and openly contemptuous of opponents he considers weak. He frequently calls others “ants,” “insects,” or “small fry,” and treats a worthwhile fight as a chance to “dance.” His desire to prove himself strongest makes Hashirama’s flattery effective, while perceived humiliation can provoke wildly disproportionate retaliation 143 146 147.
His pursuit of peace is sincere but initially inseparable from control. He exploits Obito’s kindness, engineers his despair, and ultimately sacrifices him for resurrection. Yet his confrontation with Hashirama reveals that loneliness, grief, and rejection—not merely ambition—underlie his rejection of the world 113. Ria acknowledges his desire for peace even while condemning his chosen path 115.
Defeat gradually changes his outlook without eliminating his arrogance. After his arrest, he questions whether his own darkness prevented him from seeing the world’s beauty. Later, having experienced a better life, he rejects the Revolutionary Army leader’s claim that corruption is necessary for change 116 161.
His concern for companions usually appears as irritation rather than tenderness. He stops Hashirama’s ruinous gambling, encourages Kaguya to enjoy her own life, and eventually allows Esdeath to remain close after she earns his respect in battle 144 155 161.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Madara uses ocular illusions to control enemies, immobilize targets, and expose concealed motives 145 152 161.
- Compulsion: Forces Nyau to stab himself 145.
- Tsukuyomi: Immobilizes Hashirama long enough to retaliate for his confinement; also reveals the Revolutionary Army leader’s ambitions 152 161.
- Izanami contingency: Leaves a technique in Nagato’s eyes that Obito can activate with an incantation. It distorts Nagato’s perception so that even the living Yahiko and Konan no longer appear to be themselves 76 77.
- Mental resistance: His early genjutsu fails against Leah’s disciplined will 35.
- External interference: Kong breaks a CP0 agent out of Madara’s illusion 194.
Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara’s ultimate plan uses the moon to impose a dream upon the world, presenting universal illusion as “eternal peace” 113.
- Activated through the nine-tomoe eye on his forehead 113.
- Catches Minato and others who look toward the transformed moon 113.
- Fails against the Holy Light Clerics because Holy Light protects their minds 114.
- Ria’s intervention with the God Tree releases the trapped ninja and allows them to awaken 114.
Susanoo
Madara manifests blue chakra armor ranging from a skeletal frame to Complete Body, or Perfect, Susanoo 35 112.
- Defense: Blocks barrages of light, water dragons, and Esdeath’s ice attacks 35 145 155.
- Sword attacks: The complete construct delivers enormous slashes with its samurai sword 35.
- Protecting allies: Encloses Obito and Black Zetsu against Axel’s descending Holy Sword 112.
- Combined construct: Armors Hashirama’s True Several Thousand Hands Buddha during the assault on Mary Geoise 194 195.
- Limits: Ria destroys it in their early battle; Axel’s legion-powered sword also breaks it. The Holy Light Bracelet destroys the construct by suppressing Madara’s chakra 35 112 147.
Rinnegan and Gravitational Techniques
Madara’s Rinnegan supports attraction, repulsion, and battlefield-scale destruction 114 195 231.
- Banshō Ten’in: Pulls rocks into the sky and gathers them into meteors 114.
- Tengai Shinsei: Summons a falling meteor; Axel cuts it apart with the Giant Sword of Light 111.
- Shinra Tensei: Destroys the Imperial Palace and disrupts Syura’s spatial escape network 153.
- Super Shinra Tensei: Incapacitates nearly all the Adventurers on Floor 98 and is later used against an undead army 231 367.
- Six Paths: Shinra Tensei: Sweeps across Mary Geoise, driving its shattered ruins into the sea 195.
- Limits: Ria nullifies his repulsion. Whitebeard’s shock waves penetrate Shinra Tensei and severely damage him 114 231.
Kamui and Spatial Combat
Madara uses spatial distortion offensively and defensively 114 145 153.
- Erases Liver’s upper body with Kamui 145.
- Attempts to escape Ria’s enormous hands through spatial movement, but she commands space and pulls him back before her 114.
- Uses intangibility to let Syura’s dagger and body pass through him before counterattacking 153.
Six Paths Techniques
Six Paths power expands Madara’s arsenal beyond his earlier shinobi techniques 113 114.
- Truth-Seeking Orbs: Break through the Holy Shield after its defenders scatter 113.
- Limbo clones: Deploys six clones against Ria; she blocks and burns them away, causing pain to his soul 114.
- Flight: Hovers and moves through the air in combat 113 367.
- God Tree: Summons the tree at Black Zetsu’s urging, intending to eat its fruit and become stronger. Ria removes it before this succeeds 114.
- Loss of control: Ria takes command of his Truth-Seeking Orbs despite his attempt to reclaim them with Six Paths Sage Power 114.
Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Intimidation
Madara combines large-scale techniques with fast, precise close combat 35 145 231.
- Fire Release: Uses Majestic Destroyer Flame, Great Fireball Technique, and Great Fire Blaze Technique 35 146 231.
- Earth defense: Raises a thick earthen wall against Leah’s light attack 35.
- Body Flicker Technique: Rapidly closes on Daidas and Syura, and evades Whitebeard’s space-shattering strike 145 155 231.
- Weapon combat: Fights Esdeath’s ice blade with a kunai 155.
- Killing intent: Overwhelms Night Raid members and tournament spectators through his presence alone 143 146.
Vulnerabilities and Restraints
- Soul damage: Holy flames harm him even while reincarnated; severing his burning arm lets his undead body regenerate it 112.
- Chakra suppression: The Holy Light Bracelet leaves him unable to summon chakra despite entering Six Paths Form 147.
- Limited physical defense: Minato describes shinobi such as Madara as having high offense but comparatively low defense; their perception normally prevents weaker opponents from exploiting this 367.
- Carelessness: Whitebeard badly damages him after he underestimates the Adventurers’ attacks 231.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Red plate armor — His usual combat clothing in later appearances 153 231.
- Kunai — Used for close combat and to kill the Revolutionary Army leader 153 155 161.
- Black rods — Extends one from his palm to pierce Daidas’s throat; also uses a rod to kill Minister Honest 145 155.
- Communication bracelet — Equipped for Night Raid’s coordinated operation against the minister and his officials 152.
Relationships
- Hashirama — Closest friend, rival, and frequent mediator. Their disagreement over peace drives their earlier conflict; later they fight together while continuing to bicker. Hashirama also restrains Madara’s destructive behavior and meddles in his relationship with Esdeath 113 143 147 194 366.
- Ria / Artoria — Former enemy, later the authority overseeing his service to the Holy Church. She defeats him, refuses to humiliate him after Black Zetsu’s betrayal, and instructs him to follow Hashirama during his sentence 114 115 143.
- Obito — Chosen successor and manipulated pawn. Madara engineers his despair, teaches him the Eye of the Moon Plan, and later sacrifices him to regain a living body 58 72 113.
- Black Zetsu — Apparent subordinate and eventual betrayer. Madara learns that Zetsu altered the Uchiha stone tablet and fabricated the plan’s promised outcome to free Kaguya 33 113 115.
- Kaguya — Treats Madara and Hashirama as her grandsons. Madara initially resists her affection but later shows concern for her happiness and spending habits 143 144 161.
- Esdeath — Persistent admirer and later affectionate companion. Her initial possessive pursuit angers him; after another duel, he acknowledges her strength and permits her to accompany him 146 147 155 161.
- Tobirama — Bitter antagonist. Their hostility resurfaces upon resurrection, and Madara later shatters Tobirama’s reincarnated body during his confrontation with Hashirama 108 113.
- Minato — Later mission companion who helps manage the group’s travel and smooth over Madara’s behavior 143 152 366.
- Night Raid — Mission allies initially intimidated by his contempt and killing intent. He works under Najenda’s assignments, including a mission alongside Bulat 143 145 152.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Conflict with the Holy Church
Madara initially dismisses the Church despite Black Zetsu’s report that it has repelled Hanzō. In his first major confrontation, he battles Ria—called Leah in the chapter’s battle account—away from the city, using fire techniques, genjutsu, meteors, and Complete Body Susanoo. She challenges his view of ordinary people and shatters his Susanoo with a colossal lance strike 33 35.
The attack appears to vaporize him, but Ria later confirms that he faked his death and escaped. His subsequent appearances show him continuing to prepare Obito as his successor 58 71 114.
Resurrection and the Final Shinobi Conflict
Orochimaru resurrects Madara through Impure World Reincarnation, angering him because he expected Rinne Rebirth. Despite Obito’s warnings, he assumes his restored strength will make the Holy Church insignificant 108.
On the Unbroken Plain, Madara and Obito defend the Eye of the Moon Plan against Axel’s accusation of escapism. Their confidence collapses when the Church breaks Perfect Susanoo, destroys the reincarnated army, and overwhelms the Ten-Tails through coordinated legion power 111 112.
Madara then turns on Obito, obtains true resurrection, restores his Rinnegan, and gains Six Paths power. Rejecting Hashirama’s final appeal, he activates Infinite Tsukuyomi 113.
Ria counters his strongest techniques and removes the God Tree. Black Zetsu then admits that the plan was built on lies and pierces Madara’s heart when he retaliates. Madara survives, recovers, and is arrested with the remaining Akatsuki members. Seeing the transformed shinobi world prompts him to reconsider his actions 114 115 116.
Night Raid and the Empire
Madara arrives with Hashirama, Minato, and Kaguya as Holy Church reinforcements while still serving his sentence. Hashirama explains that completing the mission will secure his freedom 143.
His principal actions include:
- Imperial Dragon Ship: Kills Daidas, compels Nyau to stab himself, and defeats Liver with Susanoo and Kamui 145.
- Esdeath’s tournament: Wins effortlessly, then fights Esdeath after she collars him. His ensuing clash with Hashirama ends when the Holy Light Bracelet suppresses his power 146 147.
- Confinement and release: Remains trapped at Esdeath’s mansion for several days until Hashirama removes the bracelet. He retaliates with Tsukuyomi and a beating before returning to the mission 152.
- Imperial Palace assault: Destroys the palace, defeats Syura, and kills both Syura and Minister Honest 153 155.
- Esdeath’s challenge: Defeats her Ice Crystal Dragons and Perfect Susanoo’s opposition, acknowledges her ice mastery, and invites her to leave with the group 155.
- Revolutionary remnants: Uses Tsukuyomi to expose the Revolutionary Army leader’s desire to become emperor, then kills him 161.
Assault on Mary Geoise
Madara and Hashirama devastate Mary Geoise with five meteors. Madara rejects the Five Elders’ recruitment offer and reinforces Hashirama’s colossal Buddha with Susanoo, overwhelming the Elders and Kong 194 195.
After the three Admirals arrive, Madara enters Six Paths Form and unleashes Six Paths: Shinra Tensei. The attack drives the ruined city into the sea and produces waves that threaten nearby ships and freed slaves 195.
Floor 98
Madara succeeds Hashirama as the Adventurers’ opponent on Floor 98. He dominates their poorly coordinated attacks, but recognizes Whitebeard’s ability to shatter space as a serious threat 230 231.
His Super Shinra Tensei incapacitates nearly everyone. Whitebeard’s shock waves nevertheless penetrate it and ruin half of his body. Madara admits his carelessness and disappears; Ace, Jozu, Kaido, and Senior are confirmed to advance 231.
Later Cross-World Operations
Madara remains protective of Uchiha tradition, angrily denouncing descendants who discuss renaming their Holy Light-altered eyes “God’s Golden Sharingan” 336.
During a later journey, his brawl with Hashirama rocks their shuttle until its pilot orders them to stop. He subsequently enters Six Paths Form and attacks a densely packed undead army with Super Shinra Tensei 366 367.
