The second floor had been cleaned thoroughly. No bloodstains remained, and a faint herbal fragrance lingered in the air, soothing his mind.
There was no bedding on the floor. Two quilts lay on the bed.
Gu Yiren said timidly in a low voice, "It wouldn't be right to make you sleep on the floor, but it wouldn't be right for me to keep hugging you either. We'll each have a quilt, with the thirty-eighth parallel between us. Unless there's danger and I have absolutely no choice, I promise I won't cross the line."
Luo Bin had still been tense, but her words startled a laugh out of him.
Gu Yiren's cheeks flushed. She climbed onto the bed from the foot and lay on the innermost side, her back to Luo Bin.
Luo Bin lay flat on his back along the outer edge. His head grew heavier, and with the Pocket Watch clasped in his hand, he closed his eyes and fell asleep.
He never slept deeply. Every so often, he woke to check the Pocket Watch, roughly once every half hour or hour.
The room was quiet. No one was there.
Downstairs was quieter still. He had not heard the door open.
Were the Evil Spirits not coming tonight?
Despite that thought, Luo Bin heard a faint rattling through his drowsiness. The Rolling Shutter Door was being opened.
He glanced at the Pocket Watch. It was one in the morning.
Quickly putting the Pocket Watch away, Luo Bin maintained his sleeping posture without giving anything away.
It was almost time. Once the Evil Spirits watching him left, he would leave the house.
He still had to throw out the Beauty Snake.
He had thought it through. He needed
