Background / History
In his former life, Luo Bin was an ordinary wage worker and spent years paralysed. During that period, his mind was his only useful organ, and he developed an exceptionally strong memory. His mother suffered from dementia and died accidentally; he carries deep regret over failing to care for her 3 9 41.
He awakens in the body of Luo Shan, a young man presumed dead after an evil-spirit attack. Luo Shan’s parents, Luo Feng and Gu Ya, had attempted a soul-summoning using secretly saved lamp oil and placed his body on a cremation platform when they believed the attempt had failed. Luo Bin receives none of Luo Shan’s memories, leaving him unfamiliar with both the family and the village’s rules 1 2 4.
Luo Feng immediately suspects that the revived young man is not his son, while Gu Ya accepts him without hesitation. Luo Bin initially maintains the impersonation to survive, but eventually embraces Gu Ya as his mother and resolves to protect her. He also inherits Luo Shan’s poor reputation, former associates, and their grudges despite having no personal knowledge of those connections 1 11 14 24.
Appearance
- Face: Luo Shan’s face has hooded double eyelids, slightly sunken eye sockets, faint dark circles, and thick, bushy eyebrows. Luo Bin does not recognise it when he first examines his reflection 3.
- Left little finger: Its nail is missing, and Luo Feng crushes the finger with an axe during the morgue confrontation. The missing nail later becomes both a source of suspicion and a sign associated with his altered condition 1 5 45.
- Visible distress: His eyes become badly bloodshot when his condition worsens; repeated assaults also leave him bruised and wounded 22 24 29.
Personality
Luo Bin is cautious, observant, and quick to improvise. Early on, he survives by feigning confusion, inventing explanations, and pretending to faint rather than answering questions he cannot safely address. His lack of Luo Shan’s memories makes ordinary conversations risky, especially when villagers expect him to know names and relationships 1 2 3 11.
His attachment to Gu Ya changes his priorities. Familiar meals revive his grief over his late mother, and he gradually moves from protecting only himself to protecting the entire Luo family. Threats against Gu Ya can overwhelm his usual restraint: after learning that someone opened the family’s kitchen window to evil spirits, he beats Zhang Jun before the accusation is proven 9 11 15.
He retains a human conscience despite his body’s bloodlust. He rejects thoughts of feeding on the outsiders or allowing them to die to conceal his secret, and he is horrified by a mutilated corpse that had excited him during the previous night. His attempts to help outsiders repeatedly conflict with the village’s harsh rules and his own need for survival 7 8 20 24.
He is awkward around women and vulnerable to Zhang Yunling’s beauty and kindness, but can deliberately withdraw when attraction threatens to distract him from urgent problems. His growing curiosity also pushes him toward investigating the mountain rather than merely enduring village life 19 32 35 36.
Abilities & Skills
Memory Replay
Luo Bin can revisit events with extraordinary clarity, experiencing earlier scenes as if they are replaying or running backward before his eyes. The first detailed occurrence includes an apparent backward jump of the room’s clock; later uses are explicitly described as rewinding memories and controlling flashbacks 3 11 39 46.
- Recovers the overlooked moment when Xu Kaiguo slips a note through his window 3.
- Replays a closing doorway to notice Gu Yiren tied to a pillar inside the Mountain God Temple 11.
- Reconstructs events from villagers’ conversations and compares details across several corpses 14 39.
- Accelerates a journey’s replay, memorises landmark trees, and draws the route to help navigate a looping path 46 47.
- Limits: Repetition cannot sharpen details he did not clearly perceive, and extensive rewinding causes severe headaches 39.
Investigation and Deduction
He combines remembered details with timing, physical clues, and inconsistencies in others’ behaviour.
- Notices that Tang Ji’s corpse lacks the bodily filth present around several other victims 39.
- Uses a pocket watch and estimated travel times to narrow the suspected killer’s home to a limited area, leaving a discreet roadside marker for Luo Feng 39 40 42.
- Questions the relationship between the mountain’s influence, Xu Kaiguo’s contradictory warnings, and the conversion of people into evil spirits. These conclusions remain his theories rather than established facts 37 41.
- Recognises contradictions in the apparent rescuers near Qiang Village: they demand that others save a trapped man but do not help him themselves, and their crowd does not physically prevent his departure 50.
Deception and Practical Survival
- Feigns confusion or unconsciousness to avoid exposing his identity 1 2.
- Uses the Village Chief’s prohibition on contacting or removing outsiders as authority to confront Zhang Jun 9.
- Conceals lamp oil in small containers, divides his supply, and carries it with him when leaving home 20 36 43.
- Probes unfamiliar ground with a long branch after encountering mountain traps 47.
- Can fight with kicks, sticks, and knives, but has no demonstrated mastery of Luo Feng’s family trade; several attackers overpower him during an ambush 9 15 24 41.
Altered Body and Symptom Control
His body develops burning thirst, bloodlust, painful sensitivity to lamp light, and disturbing excitement around violence. He associates these changes with Luo Shan’s missing fingernail and the circumstances of the soul-summoning 4 7 8.
- Lamp oil: Drinking the village’s protective oil suppresses his bloodlust and light aversion, helping him remain lucid. Its effects are temporary, requiring continued access to a scarce, monitored resource 4 20 31 36.
- Blood: Drinking from a wound prepared by Gu Yiren relieves his thirst and produces intense pleasure. He stops when he senses that taking more would seriously weaken her 27.
- Pain: Squeezing his injured finger briefly restores clarity when dangerous impulses threaten his judgement 7.
- Unresolved condition: He hopes to recover his humanity, but no permanent cure is documented 8 45.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Eight knives and leather belt — Given by Luo Feng before the mountain expedition. The sheaths have metal linings and iron-edged openings. Luo Feng mentions owning nine knives but does not explain the ninth knife’s purpose 41.
- Lamp-oil reserves — Secretly stored in his wardrobe and later divided among containers. An early portable supply is held in a tied plastic pouch that he bites open to drink unnoticed 20 22 29 36.
- Pocket watch — Supplied by Luo Feng for Luo Bin’s investigation of the suspected killer’s movements 39 40.
- Xu Kaiguo’s notes — Include Gu Yiren’s portrait with “Save her in three days” and a later warning concerning people who can influence the mountain 3 38 41.
- Burlap sack and gold earring — Keeps the sack used during his beating and the small floral earring found inside it, which he recognises as Zhu Qianqian’s possession 33 34.
- Blood talisman — Drawn on his palm during the Spirit Medium’s blessing. Zhong Zhicheng says the talismans can restore the family members’ senses once in an emergency 34.
Relationships

- Luo Feng — Luo Shan’s father. Initially threatens him and recognises the substitution, but conceals it for Gu Ya’s sake. Their relationship develops into tacit trust, practical instruction, and genuine approval 1 2 18 31 41.
- Luo Shan — Original owner of his body and public identity. Luo Bin has none of his memories but must contend with his disreputable past and former associates 2 14 24.
- Xu Kaiguo — Luo Bin’s former physician, now an ambiguous nighttime visitor. Delivers clues but repeatedly urges unsafe actions; Luo Bin suspects he may be an evil spirit with intermittent lucidity 2 3 36 37.
- Gu Yiren — The woman depicted in Xu’s note and a secretive potential ally. Offers help, provides blood, and guides him to a mountain house stocked with lamp oil; her knowledge and motives remain uncertain 8 25 27.
- Zhong Zhicheng — Village Chief who scrutinises the Luo family, assigns Luo Bin to guard the outsiders, and later warns him against excessive or misguided kindness 5 8 38.
- Zhang Yunling / Xiaoling — Cares for his injuries and attracts his interest; Gu Ya encourages a match. Privately, she plans to manipulate him and later considers using his investigative ability to identify the village’s killer 24 25 35 42.
- Zhang Li — An outsider whose initial gratitude turns into hostility. Accuses Luo Bin of abandoning the group and attacks him, though Luo Bin later searches for him out of concern and a need to reach Gu Yiren 10 24 36 40.
- Zhu Qianqian — Initially thanks him for protecting the outsiders, then becomes distrustful. Her death shocks him, and her earring becomes a clue he keeps hidden 10 24 32 34.
- Zhang Jun — A former associate of Luo Shan whom Luo Bin confronts for harassing the outsider women. Their conflict leads to accusations, public punishment, and retaliation by Zhang Jun’s associates 9 15 20 24.
- Chen Xianxian — Offers treatment after his beating. Unknown to Luo Bin, she becomes interested in him because her evil-spirit twin reacts to his presence in daylight, and she plans to bring him to her sister 24 31 36.
