Puzzled, Gu Ya headed toward the room.

"Mom, now that Dad's back, things in the village should be a lot calmer. I'm going out for a walk. I've been cooped up all day," Luo Bin told Gu Ya.

"Be back before dark," Gu Ya reminded him.

He headed straight toward the Bamboo Grove Courtyard.

After passing through the alley, he reached the Bamboo Grove Courtyard beside the foot of the mountain and stepped over its fence.

One of the room doors stood slightly ajar. Luo Bin immediately stepped forward and went inside.

Gu Yiren carefully closed the door, some of the fear fading from her eyes.

"Did anyone come in to search?" Luo Bin asked.

"Yes. A man around thirty-five or thirty-six. When he approached, I slipped into the bamboo grove. I only came back after he left," Gu Yiren answered earnestly.

Luo Bin relaxed a little. "Good, as long as it's been searched. I was worried it hadn't been, and the Village Chief would come himself when he heard. He's meticulous and pays attention to every detail."

Gu Yiren pressed her lips together and nodded.

Then a tentative look entered her eyes. Looking at Luo Bin, she said, "I don't think my cousin left this place. He didn't follow the evil spirits away."
