Ch. 1Who are you?

Luo Bin woke in the body of Luo Shan, who had died after an Evil Spirit attacked his village, and faced suspicion from the boy’s father, Luo Feng. As Luo Feng and Gu Ya tried to hide what had happened from the Village Chief, the Village Chief noticed Luo Shan’s injured hand and questioned him.

  • Luo Bin woke on a cremation platform as Luo Feng and Gu Ya prepared to burn the body of their son, Luo Shan.
  • Luo Feng suspected that the awakened boy was not his son and raised an axe against him, but the Village Chief’s knocking interrupted him.
  • Luo Feng hurriedly hid the signs of the family’s trouble while Gu Ya warned Luo Bin not to say anything.
  • The Village Chief questioned Luo Feng and Gu Ya about the commotion and rumors that an Evil Spirit had entered their home.
  • The Village Chief noticed Luo Shan’s injured left hand and asked how he had been hurt.

Ch. 2He Really Wasn't Little Shan!

Luo Bin passed as Xiao Shan long enough to leave the Morgue, but Luo Feng confronted him at home and Gu Ya vowed to protect him. After night fell, Luo Bin found his attending physician Xu Kaiguo outside the barred window, warning that Luo Feng and Gu Ya were evil specters and offering to rescue him.

  • Luo Bin convinced the Village Chief that his injured finger was an accident, and the Village Chief let him leave the Morgue with Luo Feng and Gu Ya.
  • Luo Bin realized Luo Feng had suspected he was not Xiao Shan and wondered why Luo Feng had concealed it from the Village Chief.
  • At home, Luo Feng pressed a firewood chopper to Luo Bin's chest and demanded to know who he was, so Luo Bin pretended to faint.
  • Gu Ya accused Luo Feng of never caring for Xiao Shan, then carried Luo Bin to bed and promised to take him away from danger.
  • After Gu Ya left, Luo Bin saw Xu Kaiguo at the barred window, and Xu warned him that the couple were evil specters and urged him to open the window.

Ch. 3He was opening the window! Something was wrong with him!

Luo Bin narrowly escaped being exposed after Xu Kaiguo urged him to open the window, which village rules said would let evil spirits inside. He then experienced a strange break in time and found Xu Kaiguo’s message telling him to save a woman in three days.

  • Xu Kaiguo urged Luo Bin to remove a wooden strip and open the window, but Luo Feng rushed in and threw him onto the bed.
  • Luo Bin claimed he had only been repairing the window, and Luo Feng hammered the wooden strips back into place while warning him to beware of evil spirits.
  • After Luo Feng and Gu Ya left, Luo Bin noticed the window was still ajar and pulled it shut with a clothes hanger.
  • Luo Bin questioned how Xu Kaiguo knew him and recalled that the clock’s time had skipped as his vision replayed the window incident.
  • Luo Bin found a paper Xu Kaiguo had slipped inside, bearing a drawing of a woman with a tear mole and the words, “Three days later, save her.”

Ch. 4Outsiders

After secretly drinking lamp oil to satisfy his unnatural thirst, Luo Bin tried to settle into life with his family. When four outsiders were captured and sentenced to spend the night at the Mountain God Temple, he recognized one woman as the person from Xu Kaiguo’s sketch.

  • Luo Bin drank from the oil lamp, which eased his craving and stopped its flame from hurting his eyes.
  • The next morning, Luo Feng noticed the lamp was empty, and Gu Ya warned Luo Bin not to reveal what had happened to him.
  • Villagers captured four outsiders after their car circled the village three times, and the Village Chief ordered them taken to the Mountain God Temple for the night.
  • Luo Bin recognized one captive woman as the woman drawn on Xu Kaiguo’s slip of paper, and their eyes met.

Ch. 5Entrusted with an important task?

Luo Bin learned that outsiders were trapped in the village and faced danger from evil spirits, then was ordered to guard four captives at the Mountain God Temple. He realized the assignment might let him save the woman named in his note, though the village chief’s suspicions made the task risky.

  • Gu Ya explained that the village trapped outsiders and that they could be deceived by evil spirits at night.
  • Luo Bin considered whether he should save the captive woman named in his note, but decided against it because he was in danger himself.
  • The village chief investigated Luo Feng’s lamp and ordered him to monitor how quickly its oil burned that night.
  • The village chief told Luo Bin to guard the four outsiders at the Mountain God Temple, and Gu Ya protested that the task was too dangerous.
  • Luo Feng told Gu Ya that the village chief was suspicious because Luo Bin’s missing fingernail and the vanished lamp oil could expose them.
  • Luo Bin realized he might be able to save the woman while guarding the outsiders, but wondered whether he could succeed.

Ch. 6Epilepsy or precognition?

Luo Bin stayed in a locked room with a lit oil lamp while four outsiders were held in the Mountain God Temple, where Gu Yiren claimed to remember their deaths. As night fell, Luo Bin again felt an overwhelming urge to drink blood, despite believing the effect had stopped.

  • The village chief instructed Luo Bin to keep the outsiders away and lock himself inside with the oil lamp after dark, then left with Luo Feng.
  • The captured archaeological team discussed how they had repeatedly returned to the village, and Gu Yiren described visions of them dying in the temple.
  • Zhang Li dismissed Gu Yiren’s account as an epilepsy-induced hallucination while Xu Qi tried to untie him.
  • Luo Bin watched the temple from the doorstep, wondered whether Luo Feng had tested him too, and chose not to intervene.
  • At dusk, Luo Bin lit the oil lamp, ate his provisions, and tried to sleep without putting it out.
  • Luo Bin felt thirsty and thought he needed to drink blood again, despite believing the effect had ended.

Ch. 7Light aversion and bloodlust

Luo Bin struggled to control his thirst for oil or blood while the outsiders tried to escape the Mountain God Temple. The four apparent rescuers revealed themselves as monsters, and Luo Bin feared his own growing bloodlust meant he had become an evil spirit.

  • Luo Bin resisted drinking the oil lamp and hurting the outsiders, realizing he needed a long-term way to control his abnormal condition.
  • Xu Qi, Zhang Li, and Zhu Qianqian freed themselves in the temple, and Gu Yiren remained unconscious until she awoke.
  • Four strangers claimed they could help the group escape, but Gu Yiren refused to open the doors for them and bolted them shut again.
  • The four strangers tore apart and devoured the driver while he was still alive, then approached the temple doors.
  • Luo Bin watched the killing and felt relief and a desire to join in, leaving him wondering whether he had become an evil spirit.

Ch. 8Such a relief

Luo Bin struggled to understand his growing Evil Spirit instincts and secretly drank lamp oil, while Zhong Zhicheng investigated the oddities around the Luo family and collected the night’s corpses. After Li Zhang confronted him over Xu Kaiguo’s death, Luo Bin noticed the Tear-Mole Woman silently offer to help him.

  • Luo Bin decided he might not yet be a complete Evil Spirit, drank some lamp oil, and fell asleep.
  • Zhong Zhicheng inspected the lamp in Luo Bin’s cabin, then collected the mutilated bodies near the Mountain God Temple.
  • Luo Bin woke and vomited at the sight of the corpses as Zhong Zhicheng loaded them onto the Corpse Cart.
  • Li Zhang accused Zhong Zhicheng of causing Xu Kaiguo’s death, but Zhong Zhicheng blamed the outsiders for their choices and kicked Li Zhang away when he pursued him.
  • The Tear-Mole Woman silently mouthed “I can help you” to Luo Bin, who replayed the moment and realized what she had said.

Ch. 9Your son has failed you, never once letting you rest easy

Luo Bin was shaken by memories of his dead mother when Gu Ya brought him his favorite foods, then learned that the lamp oil at home had mysteriously decreased. At the Mountain God Temple, he stopped a fat villager from assaulting Gu Yiren and confronted him by invoking the Village Chief's orders.

  • Gu Ya brought Luo Bin steamed egg custard and shredded potatoes, prompting memories of his mother and leaving both Gu Ya and Luo Bin in tears.
  • Luo Bin learned from Luo Feng that the lamp oil at their house was short and that the Village Chief would stay to observe that night.
  • Luo Bin rushed to the Mountain God Temple after hearing a commotion and found Zhang Li beaten and Gu Yiren and Zhu Qianqian threatened by a fat villager.
  • The fat villager claimed he could take the women in early, but Luo Bin struck him and warned that he would report his actions to the Village Chief.
  • As the fat villager left, Luo Bin recalled his exchange of looks with Gu Yiren and wondered how she could help him.

Ch. 10The window wasn't closed

Luo Bin used Rewind to discover that Gu Yiren had been signaling him with the words “The window wasn't closed,” recalling the note Xu Kaiguo had once slipped through an open window. Meanwhile, Zhang Yunling secretly opened a window at the Luo home and spoke as if to an unseen companion, while Zhang Li tied Gu Yiren up during another disturbing episode.

  • Luo Bin left the Mountain God Temple after Zhang Li and Zhu Qianqian asked for help getting their vehicle back and leaving the village.
  • Luo Bin repeatedly rewound the temple doors closing and saw Gu Yiren watching him and moving her lips before he realized she was saying, “The window wasn't closed.”
  • Zhang Yunling delivered food for Gu Ya, secretly lifted the kitchen window latch, and spoke to an unseen presence about helping everyone leave, including Luo Shan.
  • Zhu Qianqian urged Zhang Li to seek Luo Shan's help, but Zhang Li feared the villagers would treat Gu Yiren like an artifact if they learned about her condition.
  • Gu Yiren looked toward an unseen presence and longed toward the temple doors, so Zhang Li tied her to a pillar as he feared another episode.

Ch. 11It Was Raining

Luo Bin discovered that Gu Yiren was bound inside the Mountain God Temple and grew wary of what had happened there. As night and rain settled over the village, Zhong Zhicheng arrived at Luo Feng and Gu Ya’s home and prepared to watch the oil lamp burn.

  • Luo Bin reflected on Gu Ya’s care for him and vowed to protect her before Zhang Yunling brought food to the cabin.
  • Luo Bin delivered food to Zhang Li and used his rewind ability to glimpse Gu Yiren tied to a pillar inside the Mountain God Temple.
  • Luo Bin wondered why Zhang Li had bound Gu Yiren and recalled signs that Zhang Li had been protecting her from Zhang Jun.
  • Gu Ya worried about Luo Shan in the rain while Luo Feng tried to reassure her.
  • Zhong Zhicheng came to Luo Feng and Gu Ya’s house after striking the evening gong, filled the oil lamp, and sat beneath it to watch it burn.

Ch. 12Evil spirits entered the village

As evil spirits flooded into the village, Luo Bin resisted their lure and recognized the man and boy at his door as the spirits who had killed the original owner. He wondered whether the spirits were heading to kill the village chief, while the outsiders remained shut inside the Mountain God Temple.

  • Zhu Qianqian asked Zhang Li to recheck the windows, but Gu Yiren insisted they were still open and Zhang Li refused to warn Luo Shan.
  • Luo Bin shut his door and lit his oil lamp, using sips of lamp oil to resist his growing aversion to light and craving for blood.
  • A crowd of smiling evil spirits entered the village from the mountain forest instead of approaching the Mountain God Temple.
  • A man at Luo Bin's door tried to lure him outside by claiming the village chief had lied about the spirits, but Luo Bin recognized the deception and refused.
  • The man and a boy triggered fragmented memories showing they had killed the original owner, and Luo Bin wondered if the spirits were going after the village chief.

Ch. 13A chance to come clean!

Zhong Zhicheng confronted Luo Feng over the dwindling lamp oil, but a sudden flare revealed evil spirits had entered Luo Feng’s house. As the spirits emerged from the kitchen, Luo Feng suspected Zhang Yunling or Zhang Jun had enabled them to get in.

  • Zhong Zhicheng accused Luo Feng of hiding lamp oil and explained that the oil burned faster only when evil spirits were nearby.
  • The lamp flared as Gu Ya crossed the courtyard, and Luo Feng pulled her into the main room before Zhong Zhicheng shut the door.
  • Zhong Zhicheng tested the door and confirmed that evil spirits were inside, so he and Luo Feng barricaded the main room.
  • A crowd of evil spirits left the kitchen and approached the main room while Zhong Zhicheng collected lamp oil.
  • Luo Feng recalled that Zhang Yunling had visited and suspected that she or Zhang Jun had opened the kitchen window.

Ch. 14So Hated?

After surviving a night of evil spirits, Luo Bin learned from the villagers that spirits had entered the Luo Family home and that he had narrowly escaped death. He arrived at a public gathering where Zhang Jun and Zhang Yunling were tied up, and began piecing together what had happened.

  • Luo Bin overslept, found his lamp oil nearly gone, and went to look for the Village Chief.
  • Gu Ya hurried to check that Luo Bin was safe, but her frightened appearance and failure to mention Luo Feng made him worry that something had happened to his father.
  • Luo Bin followed Gu Ya and the villagers to a gathering, where Zhang Jun and Zhang Yunling were tied to a platform.
  • Villagers criticized Luo Bin and said he had escaped the previous night's evil spirits because the Village Chief had assigned him to watch the outsiders.
  • Luo Bin listened to the crowd and used his ability to reconstruct the events of the night, learning that evil spirits had entered the Luo Family home.

Ch. 15Parade him! Parade him! Parade him!

After learning that someone had opened the Luo Family kitchen window and endangered his parents, Luo Bin attacked Zhang Jun in front of the village. The villagers called for Zhang Jun to be paraded, leaving Luo Bin wondering what that punishment meant.

  • Luo Bin reached Gu Ya at the platform and learned that Luo Feng was safe and sealing the windows at home.
  • Luo Bin climbed onto the platform, grabbed a stick, and beat Zhang Jun while accusing him of opening the Luo Family's window.
  • Zhong Zhicheng ordered Luo Bin to stop and asked whether he had a grudge against Zhang Jun.
  • Luo Bin recounted what Zhang Jun had done at the Mountain God Temple, and Zhang Jun admitted it but denied opening the window.
  • The villagers cursed Zhang Jun and repeatedly demanded that he be paraded, while Luo Bin wondered what the punishment involved.

Ch. 16He Had Known It Would Happen!

Luo Bin helped clear Zhang Yunling’s name and escorted her home before returning to the Mountain God Temple. He realized that Gu Ya had predicted the events of the previous night when she said the window had not been closed.

  • Zhong Zhicheng freed Zhang Yunling after the villagers learned she had been falsely accused, and Gu Ya asked Luo Bin to take her home.
  • Gu Ya left Luo Bin with Zhang Yunling and told him to return to the Mountain God Temple to watch the Outsider.
  • Zhang Yunling invited Luo Bin inside, but he hurried away; alone, she took out a rag doll and asked it what to do.
  • Luo Bin found his food disturbed and his water flask missing at the hut.
  • Luo Bin remembered that Gu Ya had said the window was not closed and realized she had known the previous night’s events would happen.

Ch. 17The outsiders vanished!

Luo Bin discovered that Zhang Li, Zhu Qianqian, and Gu Yiren had left the Mountain God Temple with the oil lamp, and he realized Gu Yiren had been taken away against her will. Zhong Zhicheng refused to search for the outsiders, leaving Luo Bin to face the danger of rescuing Gu Yiren as Luo Feng approached.

  • Luo Bin found Zhang Li, Zhu Qianqian, and Gu Yiren missing from the Mountain God Temple, along with the chain, oil lamp, kettle, and flatbreads.
  • Luo Bin guessed that the three had gone to find the car, but he encountered villagers parading Zhang Jun instead.
  • Luo Bin told Zhong Zhicheng that the outsiders had escaped, but Zhong Zhicheng said he would not send anyone after them and warned that they would receive no village protection until the next day.
  • Luo Bin realized Gu Yiren had been taken away against her will and understood that rescuing her would be dangerous but valuable.
  • Gu Ya told Luo Bin to let the outsiders fend for themselves, and Luo Feng approached them.

Ch. 18No One Knows a Son Better Than His Father

Luo Bin realized Luo Feng had seen through his identity as someone other than Luo Shan, but Luo Feng chose to protect him and teach him how to survive in the village for Gu Ya’s sake. As the family prepared for the nighttime procession, Zhang Yunling arrived and asked to stay with them.

  • Luo Feng warned Luo Bin to avoid making enemies and said Gu Ya mattered most, while Luo Bin realized his father had recognized he was not Luo Shan.
  • Luo Bin apologized to Gu Ya and accepted responsibility for the trouble with Zhang Jun, earning a look of approval from Luo Feng.
  • Luo Bin decided he needed lamp oil to become human and considered asking Luo Feng for help with Gu Yiren.
  • Zhang Yunling came to Luo Feng and Gu Ya’s home, saying she felt better but wanted to stay there during the nighttime procession.

Ch. 19They had left the village

Luo Bin learned that Zhang Yunling had been arrested because of Luo Feng and was now staying with the family. After Luo Feng revealed that Zhang Li and the other outsiders had left the village and explained the deadly procession awaiting them if they returned after dark, Luo Bin wondered whether they would stay outside overnight.

  • Gu Ya brought Zhang Yunling home, and Luo Bin realized Luo Feng had been involved in her arrest.
  • Luo Bin saw the bloodied kitchen and learned from Luo Feng that evil spirits had tortured rats in an attempt to lure his mother there.
  • Luo Bin asked to inspect the outsiders’ car, and Luo Feng took him to a lot where tire tracks showed the outsiders had left the village.
  • Luo Feng warned that the outsiders would likely turn back and face death if they returned after dark, when evil spirits carried out the procession.
  • Luo Feng explained that the procession involved spirits tormenting villagers, and Luo Bin feared what would happen to Zhang Li and the others.

Ch. 20You think you can?

Luo Bin secretly saved lamp oil and went with his family to watch Zhang Jun face the village’s punishment. When outsiders arrived at the entrance, Luo Bin tried to protect them, and Old Kong unexpectedly opened the door for him.

  • Luo Bin took some oil from the Mountain God Temple lamp and hid it in a plastic pouch.
  • At the village entrance, Zhang Jun raged from the Prisoner Cart and accused Zhang Yunling and Luo Shan of setting him up.
  • Luo Feng chose a house near the entrance so Gu Ya and Zhang Yunling would not have to see the bloody parts of Zhang Jun’s punishment.
  • A Santana arrived at the entrance, and Old Kong explained that the outsiders from the Mountain God Temple had escaped.
  • Luo Bin asked to bring the outsiders inside, admitting he had failed to watch them and arguing that they did not deserve to die.
  • Old Kong opened the door after Luo Feng nodded, leaving Luo Bin surprised.
