Background / History

Creation and Training

Dumite creates Hongjun using the god gene. Despite his resemblance to an Earth child, Dumite explicitly identifies him as a humanoid lifeform rather than a human. His exceptional strength overturns Zhang Fan’s initial dismissal of him: he destroys Dumite’s weapon and injures Zhang Fan during their tests 244.

Zhang Fan names him Zhang Hongjun and takes him to a primitive planet outside Insect Race occupation, where they train for twelve years. Hongjun learns every ability Zhang Fan teaches him and grows into a strapping young man. Zhang Fan eventually declares him ready to act independently and returns with him to the Kronos 244.

His genetic construction is deliberately incomplete. Zhang Fan states that three key gene groups were removed, while Pangu later confirms that the incomplete gene chain limits Hongjun’s power and warns against letting him obtain the complete god gene 259 276.

Earthfire Fortress and the Plague Outbreak

Seeing the Insect Race struggle against Earthfire Fortress on Lucius Star, Hongjun asks Kaina to let him attack. When she repeatedly refuses, he knocks out a Barton soldier, steals his uniform, and bluffs his way aboard a landing craft by claiming to be acting under Kaina’s orders 244.

Hongjun destroys a bunker and fights General Kate, whose experience cannot fully compensate for the young warrior’s speed and strength. He abandons the assault when an illness incapacitates the Insect Race, realizing Zhang Fan may also be in danger. Back aboard the Kronos, he stabilizes Zhang Fan with qi and attacks the virus using thought energy; Zhang Fan awakens and identifies Plague as responsible 245.

Inventor and Increasingly Independent Commander

Hongjun claims he can construct the Time Control Device in fewer than three days if given the materials. Zhang Fan considers the claim credible because Hongjun may retain inherited memories from the god gene 246.

He later develops reconnaissance and energy-detection devices and receives responsibility for operations against Varagon. Zhang Fan uses this assignment as a test of how Hongjun behaves when given power, leaving Soraya to monitor him 259.

His initiative also begins to undermine military discipline. He recalls Pangu’s army without Zhang Fan’s permission; although the reinforcements prove useful, Zhang Fan is disturbed that Pangu obeyed without verifying the order 257.

Campaign Against Plague and Betrayal

Hongjun recognizes that Plague’s expanding black mist gains strength by consuming planets. Over Soraya’s objections, he orders six black obsidian charges detonated to destroy the galaxies inside the mist and remove its supply of matter. Zhang Fan narrowly escapes the blast, which also destroys nearby warships 262.

The plan works, but exposes a greater danger: Hongjun’s consciousness has quietly enveloped the Insect Race’s forces and exceeds Zhang Fan’s Overlord Consciousness. Zhang Fan considers killing him, then holds back because Hongjun is still successfully carrying out the campaign against Plague 262.

When Plague becomes a dark Star Kun, Hongjun orders the fleet away, absorbs soul energy, and transforms into a white Star Kun to confront him. After Zhang Fan kills Plague, he uses the Time Control Device to return Hongjun to humanoid form 263 265 266.

Hongjun subsequently kneels and asks forgiveness for his unauthorized actions. While Zhang Fan is distracted and inclined to spare him, an overwhelming consciousness attack kills the Overlord. After resurrection, Zhang Fan identifies Hongjun as his attacker and attributes the sudden increase in power to the awakened god gene 268.

Divine Lord and Artifact Hunt

Following Zhang Fan’s death, Hongjun assimilates a large portion of the Insect Race. Soraya and Pangu preserve an independent force at Six-Star, while Hongjun’s troops fight Mimipa for control of the Time Passage 269.

As Divine Lord, Hongjun pursues the Seven Divine Artifacts and the restoration of the God Race. He prioritizes accessible artifacts over confronting the returned Zhang Fan, reasoning that the Insect Race’s time artifact cannot yet be located 277.

His search for the Spear of Revival leads to Atlas Star. Rather than fight its inhabitants directly, he moves its moon close enough to destroy the atmosphere and devastate the oceans and underwater cities. The artifact is absent from the ruins, prompting him to coerce Priestess Anlin by forcing her to watch her people being killed 277.

Anlin secretly seals the artifacts and broadcasts their locations, hoping to rally resistance. Hongjun anticipates her move and treats the broadcast as a way to make the universe search on his behalf, while retaining her people as leverage to break the seals 278.

War Against Zhang Fan’s Coalition

Zhang Fan’s schemes help turn the Element Race, Black Market, and other factions against Hongjun. Attempts to recover allies or divide the opposition fail, pushing Hongjun toward military action 300 301.

Hongjun attacks the Black Market while using an apparent threat against the Element Race to draw Taita forces away from their territory. Zhang Fan traps the Black Market attackers in alternate-dimensional space and restores the dormant Overlord Consciousness in two-thirds of them, reclaiming those warriors. Hongjun’s true offensive devastates the Taita Star Region 302 303.

Hongjun later conceals his plans behind multiple fleets and false energy signatures. He prepares Blade to stall an invasion of the Capital Star while a sinister double works toward opening a gateway and restoring the God Race. The double describes the two as the same self 305 306.

During the invasion, Zhang Fan locates the double at the Golden Gate, severs its mental connection to Hongjun, and takes control of it. Hongjun remains unaware that the gate-opening operation has been compromised 309 310.

Defeat and Destruction of His Forces

Hongjun expects the sacred gate to make his faction invincible. Instead, its divine power strengthens Zhang Fan and spreads through the Insect Race. Zhang Fan returns, overwhelms Hongjun, and confiscates his rebuilt Time Control Device 312 313.

Hongjun pleads for his forces to be spared. He claims that his attack on Zhang Fan was accidental, that he took Zhang Fan’s body to revive him, and that the shadow split from him after he devoured that body. These explanations are presented as Hongjun’s account, not independently established motives 314.

He also reveals that his Twelve-Sided Cube project lacks the Judgment Dragons’ genes. Valaya disputes the premise of his restoration effort, and Zhang Fan concludes that Hongjun’s creations are false gods rather than the original God Race. Zhang Fan destroys those forces, then contains Hongjun and Pangu within an energy barrier for a confrontation that prevents Hongjun from detonating himself 314.

Appearance

  • Child form: Resembles a human boy of about five years old, despite being an artificial humanoid 244.
  • Young adult form: Becomes a strapping young man after twelve years of training 244.
  • Star Kun form: Transforms into a white giant kun during his battle with Plague 263 265.

Personality

Hongjun initially combines curiosity, confidence, and impatience. He enjoys testing his abilities, wants to spar with Pangu, and refuses to abandon his desire to fight at Earthfire Fortress. His early loyalty is also practical: when the plague threatens Zhang Fan, he leaves the battlefield to save him 244 245. His inventions reflect a broader curiosity about the universe, which he describes as containing too many things he wants to learn 259.

His independence develops into disregard for authority. He issues unauthorized military orders and defends the black obsidian detonation as the only sensible response, even though it nearly kills Zhang Fan 257 262.

As Divine Lord, he becomes openly cruel and manipulative. He destroys Atlas without confronting its people, enjoys coercing Anlin through executions, and turns her resistance into an advantage 277 278. Nevertheless, restoring his supposed God Race remains more than a claim to power: when defeated, he is willing to die if his surviving creations can be preserved 313 314.
