Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Death Star diversification 3 After six hundred sunrise–sunset cycles, the worms replace all primitive life and diversify into Rabid Hounds, Broodmothers, Sword Mantises, and War Elephants; some varieties develop intelligence.
Intelligent Matriarchs 10 Overmind and aggressive spider genes produce intelligent, reproductive Matriarchs capable of energy attacks. Death Star worm foundations prove more compatible with added genes than Rebecca-derived foundations.
Qi-enhanced combat units 17 Bull-Armored Scorpions, Venom Bees, Fox Monkeys, and Qi Mantises introduce anti-robot specialization, charged venom projectiles, and qi attacks.
Jade-derived air and heavy-ground forces 31 Parasitic warfare generates tens of millions of species for selection. Super Six-Eye becomes a space-capable attack craft, while the Tyrant Beast becomes the strongest ground unit yet.
Reproducible Progenitors 54 First-generation organisms become Ancestor Broodmothers that reproduce selected traits, with warrior genes prioritized.
Duplication and Disguise 55 Blue Cardian genes enable temporary duplication and host imitation. Duplication is implanted into Venom Scorpion.
Specialized combined-arms forces 70 Yata presents the mobile Broodmother command ship, Blast Bees, and six ground types covering reconnaissance, assault, demolition, transport, control, and artillery.
Century-long fleet expansion 87 Conquest along the route north builds a force of 150,000 Emperors and tens of billions of troops; Giant Fortress Bugs provide mobile ground command centers.
Locarno-assisted evolution begins 88 Psychic Energy Collectors support an evolutionary process reported as fifteen percent complete, with completion initially projected to take thirty years.
Psionic fleet and troop overhaul 89 Locarno converters and elemental genes produce specialized ground echelons, expanded aerial forces, and the Primordial Spirit Emperor Bug series.
Interstellar psionic communications 90 A completed Psionic Communication Bug network lets Zhang Fan contact Nexis across millions of light-years.
Kade-derived expansion and fixed artillery 96 Spoils roughly double the army. Fusion Dragon Cannon Bugs provide stationary attacks powerful enough to destroy a white dwarf, but charge slowly.
Beast-Fusion Insect legion 108 Fusion agents assimilate captured Orc warriors, adding three million warships and approximately four trillion ground troops.
Enhanced vanguard and regenerating mantises 119 Enhanced Swift Spirit Bugs gain stronger, versatile tendrils. Phantom Blade Mantises acquire a Hydra Bug regeneration stage.
Upper-tier interstellar civilization 143 In less than two hundred years, expansion reaches two thousand surrounding galaxies, prompting proposals for Western Realm council representation.
Fortified Milky Way force 149 Three years of unrestricted development establish layered galactic defenses and a main fleet of thirty million warships.
Approximately two thousand varieties 153 The military review introduces coordinated Swift Spirit Bug roles, support organisms, advanced host-control units, and the planet-powered Destruction platform. Mutants and divergent strains are excluded from the count.
Mechanical Insect Race 175 176 Doria combines three races’ technologies to create semi-mechanical insects with reinforced skeletons, guns, laser weapons, and mechanical defenses.
S-Class battleship production 180 181 Four hundred S-Class ships hatch. The Origin Dragon Nest Bug combines multi-target artillery, concealment, regenerative cells, and Nanorepair Bugs.
Race-wide Dragon Breath evolution 194 Zhang Fan’s transformation unexpectedly affects the entire race. After seven days of collapse and false death, members revive on the eighth day through molting, gaining greater strength, speed, and reflexes.
Giant Shapeshifting Insect hulls 217 Duolaner develops Shapeshifting Insects capable of reaching half the size of Insect-Transformed Kronos, though each requires a galaxy’s mineral resources.
Vitter-native biological system 218 Roughly half a year on Origin Star produces a new system combining native and original-universe genes, including Origin Matriarch Sophia and rapidly growing Frenzy Beasts.
Electrical troops and armed shapeshifting fleet 219 M2 genes produce Charge Frenzy Beasts and an electrical hatching base. Captured F3 weapons equip Shapeshifting Insect hulls.
Ilis-adapted vanguard and Insect Ants 224 Sustained combat strengthens the vanguard through adaptation and mimicry. Assimilating the ant queen creates armored, electrically armed Insect Ants.
Mechanical Dawnlight Barton and dragon-scale armor 227 Mechanical targeting enables the Dawnlight Barton to kill the Three-Headed Dragon. Its genes produce wind, fire, and lightning units; subsequently hatched insects receive its defensive carapace.
Modular Kronos flagship 241 Hundreds of Shapeshifting Insects linked by a Control Bug form the largest Insect Race warship, capable of separating into a fleet and replacing damaged sections.
Stronger returning fleet 275 Noya and Snow White’s newly arrived force annihilates the attacking Taita fleet in under twenty minutes, astonishing veteran Barton allies.
Overlord Consciousness Enhancer 300 Duolaner completes a device intended to amplify Zhang Fan’s consciousness, which he takes to test against the shielding around the Female Priestess’s Nanobugs.
Advanced self-destructing series 310 Regenerating Suicide Insects, Chain-Reaction Suicide Insects, and Nano Suicide Insects expand the race’s explosive and biological-area-denial capabilities.

Organization and Leadership

Overlord

  • Zhang Fan holds supreme authority over the race, appointing commanders, directing evolution, and determining its political objectives 54 108 319.
  • Members carry his consciousness, allowing them to recognize priorities such as Second Earth’s protection without a separate explanation 36.
  • His authority extends to stripping Beast God Generals of military command and disciplining senior researchers 154 319.
  • Separation from him can become a race-wide crisis: the loss of his connection during the Dragon Breath transformation leaves ordinary insects and generals alike helpless 194.

Matriarchs and Specialist Leaders

  • Shusha — Appointed Strategic Matriarch; oversees deployments, diplomacy, infiltration, and major organizational projects 49 54 129 319.
  • Kara — Appointed Research Matriarch after developing the Progenitors’ reproductive system 54.
  • Duolaner — Entrusted with Second Earth’s protection, an appointment treated as making her the race’s second leader at that time; later develops bodies, warships, and consciousness-amplification technology 36 149 217 300.
  • Livina — Replaces Noya as deputy commander, handling logistics and surveillance 33.
  • Akadelan — Commands the Ferandel campaign, gene acquisition, and fighting against the Brocade Council 54 55 57 58.
  • Nexis — Oversees military development and maintains a publicly recognized Western Realm faction under Domina’s protection while remaining aligned with Zhang Fan 90 112 153.
  • Yata — Leads the Li’erwala Insect Tribe and presents its specialized military developments 70.
  • Doria — Administers the Brocade Galaxy and develops the Mechanical Insect Race; her hierarchical standing is effectively equal to Shusha’s 175.
  • Sophia — Origin Matriarch responsible for the Vitter branch’s administration, genetic research, and strategic consolidation 218 219 224.

Beast God Generals and Allied Commands

  • Beast God Generals lead major military formations; Noya identifies herself as one of twelve by the Taita invasion 142 275.
  • Noya is redirected from broad Matriarch duties toward specialized combat command after shortcomings in fleet leadership 33.
  • Charm Spider conducts delaying actions, infiltration, and Southern Realm campaigns. At Zhang Fan’s return against the Taita, she is kept in reserve as the race’s only devourer 102 181 275 333.
  • Pangu commands Vitter conquests and the reunification campaign on Demihaila 219 232 233.
  • White Tiger commands the assimilated Beast-Fusion Insect legion, retaining his leadership role after forced transformation 108.
  • Badara leads the Barton allies, whose warriors serve as the Insect Race’s vanguard in exchange for supplies and rewards 221 227 275.

Biology and Abilities

Genetic Assimilation and Directed Evolution

The race acquires useful traits from conquered organisms and combines them into purpose-built units 31 219 227.

  • Zhang Fan can direct large-scale selection, allowing mutations to compete before combining successful traits 31.
  • Progenitors and parasitic organisms obtain host genes, while Ancestor Broodmothers transmit selected traits through eggs 31 54 55.
  • Death Star worm foundations initially lose five percentage points of gene-addition success per additional gene; Purple Thorn foundations lose fifteen 10.
  • Compatibility is not guaranteed. Early attempts to incorporate M2 electrical genes burn out the Insect Race genes until Sophia finds a viable combination after thousands of trials 219.
  • Natural adaptation can exceed artificial evolution in combat improvement, but remains constrained by universal laws the race cannot yet alter 224.

Overlord Consciousness and Collective Loyalty

Members possess an embedded connection to Zhang Fan, and unity is deliberately reinforced in their genes 36 58.

  • Newly assimilated Beast-Fusion Insects retain self-awareness but acquire an Overlord consciousness and a sense of kinship with the race 108.
  • Zhang Fan rejects early parasitic offspring when host inheritance weakens his mental imprint and threatens obedience 30.
  • Loyalty does not prevent disagreement, recklessness, or disobedience: commanders require correction, and many experimental humanoid insects refuse to obey 33 58 154.
  • External consciousness can shield embedded insects from his control, as demonstrated by the golden consciousness protecting the Female Priestess’s Nanobugs 299.

Parasitism, Disguise, and Insect Transformation

The race uses infection both to obtain biological resources and to penetrate enemy societies 31 55 108.

  • Parasitic Wasps induce destructive feeding in hosts, whose offspring preserve useful host traits 31.
  • Parasitic Ticks attack Jade’s fungus; later boarding footage shows ticks infiltrating victims and reproducing internally 31 57.
  • Progenitors can replace hosts and use their appearance to steal information, as Qiusha does with portal-technology archives 55.
  • Fusion agents convert biological organisms into insects while preserving apparent personality; White Tiger’s transformation is expected to finish in about two minutes 108.
  • Nonbiological transformation is still under research during the Beast-Fusion campaign, but later operations transform machinery and captured countermeasure installations 108 149 330.
  • Spy Bugs presented as anti-infiltration protection secretly contain parasitic genes, giving the race an additional foothold inside allied forces 129.

Mental Control

Several specialized organisms manipulate non-insect minds 70 332.

  • Insect Shapers can control approximately one hundred creatures simultaneously, depending on the mental strength required; their own defenses are extremely weak 70.
  • Brain Bugs, combined with Princess Midona’s mental power, control Aurorans and can leave affected guards without memory of their actions 332.
  • Visible parasites provide cover for concealed Brain Bugs during negotiations and military occupation 333 337.
  • Within three days of entering Aurora’s second defensive line, the infiltration takes control of nearly one-third of its vanguard forces 337.

Regeneration and Survival

Regenerative traits support both individual recovery and sustained military production 119 181.

  • Phantom Blade Mantises revert to a Hydra Bug state after death and regrow within minutes unless destroyed in that state 119.
  • Origin Dragon Nest Bugs rapidly repair their hulls through regenerative cells and Nanorepair Bugs; their survival remains dependent on available energy 181.
  • Mud Bugs survive laser attacks and use the abilities of living or nonliving hosts. Slime Bugs merge with hosts and deliver paralytic venom 153.
  • Regenerative genes can become recessive in isolated populations. Zhang Fan restores Kaina’s regeneration after discovering this condition in the Subo Kingdom 232.

Energy, Mobility, and Communications

The race combines multiple biological energy systems with acquired technology 31 89 219.

  • Super Six-Eye uses qi, electricity, magic energy, and crystal energy, survives in space, and carries Qi Spiders 31.
  • Duplication briefly produces two bodies with a modest strength reduction, but causes about a minute of dizziness when activated 55.
  • Teleportation Bugs move troops between paired organisms over distances of up to five hundred kilometers 70.
  • Charge Frenzy Beasts recover from an electrical blast after one second of stun and recharge for another blast in twenty seconds 219.
  • Psionic Communication Bugs connect distant branches across millions of light-years 90.

Living Fleet

  • Broodmother — Mobile command ship with extremely fast defensive tentacles and Blast Bee launch capability. Its blood-vessel network houses an internal insect city 70 88.
  • Emperor — Early capital warship used for fleet combat, transport, and biological-weapons deployment 38 55.
  • Primordial Spirit Emperor Bug series — Locarno-enhanced successors that expand the fleet into coordinated offensive and defensive ship types 89.
  • Spirit Dragon Brood Bug — Zhang Fan’s command vessel during the Northern Realm campaigns; healing units repair it after Kade’s planetary lasers damage it 92.
  • Grasshopper — Meng Jia’s autonomous Super A-Class living warship, with short-range spatial warping and defenses comparable to the Spirit Dragon Brood Bug 173 174.
  • Shapeshifting Insects — Initially imitate ship speed and performance without offensive power; later become armed hulls and modular components of larger vessels 174 219 241.
  • Origin Dragon Nest Bug — S-Class vessel with twelve-target artillery, environmental camouflage, detection-wave absorption, and rapid biological repair 181.
  • Kronos — Modular flagship assembled from hundreds of Shapeshifting Insects. Its defenses include 360,000 reinforced tentacles, six barriers, and layered shell, dragon-scale, and membrane armor 241.

Strategic Weapons

  • Insect Fungi — Infect and turn enemy ships against one another. Their rapid reproduction creates a danger to the Insect Race itself, prompting research into safer strains 33 38.
  • Black obsidian — Weapons made from dark crystals; use near friendly forces can cause mutual destruction 54 58.
  • Fusion Dragon Cannon Bugs — Immobile, slow-charging defensive organisms whose nuclear-fusion attacks can destroy a white dwarf 96.
  • Mirass Super Cannons and Planet-Breaking Bugs — Strategic artillery used for planetary destruction, fleet support, and coercion 106 107 149.
  • Destruction — Planet-powered platform capable of surviving a Mirass Super Cannon hit and firing a shot powerful enough to destroy the Solar System; deployed along the Milky Way’s outskirts 153.
  • Mechanical Dawnlight Barton — Biological black-obsidian beam weapon upgraded with mechanical precision systems to track and repeatedly strike distant targets 227.
  • Advanced Suicide Insects — Deliver explosions alongside corrosive acid, infectious venom, pathogens, and parasitic fungi across contested space 310.

Limitations and Countermeasures

  • Adaptive infection: Jade’s fungus learns to penetrate pheromone camouflage and reduces the time needed to drive a Matriarch-level unit mad from three days to one 31.
  • Logistical growth: Tyrant Beasts are too large for Rebecca in sufficient numbers and mature too slowly for prompt deployment 31.
  • Advanced equipment: Gomud bio-boosted armor, shields, and light-energy weapons devastate massed insect formations and penetrate their carapaces 58.
  • Early parasitic restrictions: The Brocade Council initially concludes that the invaders cannot parasitize Biohumans or machines, making those forces central to its planned response 57.
  • Chemical disorientation: Red Shadow High-Explosive Bombs cause insects to lose direction and distinguish neither friend nor foe; Advanced Insect Shapers cannot restore control 181.
  • Uneven ship quality: Grasshopper outclasses Ink warships, but ordinary insect ships suffer heavily against Ink fighters and bombers 174.
  • Resource costs: Producing a single giant Shapeshifting Insect requires an entire galaxy’s minerals, nearly exhausting the Insect Starfield during development 217.
  • Failed human-template designs: Early humanoid insects reproduce poorly and require five to seven years to become combat-capable. A powerful humanoid Beast God General dies before age five because its accelerated metabolism overwhelms its body 154.
  • Overlord dependence: The race-wide collapse exposes its territories to rebellion and mass killing while its members cannot defend themselves 194.

History

Foundation and Early Cooperation

Zhang Fan’s initial army spreads outward from a biological laboratory on Death Star, consumes the planet’s primitive life, and develops distinct combat and reproductive forms. Experiments later establish that these original worms provide a more reliable genetic foundation than Rebecca-derived organisms 3 10.

The early race also pursues negotiated development. Treaties with Asha grant the Rebecca Insectoids temporary sovereignty over Camille Star while preserving Asha’s Mujing mining rights. The partners exchange scientific and biological technology, biological armor, and holy defensive armor 8.

Jade and the First Expansion Campaigns

The living planet Jade becomes both an enemy and a genetic resource. Zhang Fan withdraws infected forces, enforces inspections before their return to Rebecca, and develops camouflage with the Matriarchs. When Jade adapts, he continues the conflict to improve the race rather than simply destroy the planet 31.

The expanding fleet attacks the Moon Ape and Green Vine forces. Noya’s costly command decisions lead Zhang Fan to specialize her role, while a concealed fungal infestation prepares the Green Vine fleet for later defeat. A Titan Egg subsequently penetrates Green Vine Star’s core and spreads vines across the world 33 38.

Around Second Earth, the race parasitizes seven neighboring planets to establish a protective ring. Duolaner receives responsibility for the human refuge’s defense 34 36.

Nine Clouds and Brocade

The Nine Clouds campaign combines siege warfare with attacks on reinforcements. Shusha exploits the rivalry between the Sun Kings to negotiate an alliance and obtain territorial concessions, while the race uses underground Pipe Worms to launch troops into Proud Sun City 46 49 51.

At Ferandel, Progenitor infiltration precedes open invasion and the theft of portal technology. The destruction of most of a Brocade Council rescue fleet escalates the conflict into a multi-fleet war 55 56 57 58.

After surrender, the Insect Race restructures the Brocade Council’s hierarchy. The Nado rise to second place, the Gomud lose permission to use Bio-Boosted Armor, and the Wade are restricted to engineering rather than combat robots. Later rule brings improved living standards and the consolidation of the three peoples under the name “Brocade Race” 61 180.

Northern Realm Campaigns

Minerva pressures Zhang Fan to help free the sealed Dragon lord Dimayadis. He bargains for protection guarantees, including future protection of the Solar System if the rescue succeeds, and support against Domina 87.

Locarno refugees exchange biological upgrades for a planet and one hundred years of protection. Their technology strengthens the race, although planetary restoration requires a thousand years of stored psychic energy and cannot be readily adopted for routine use 88 89.

The Northern campaigns consume Kade’s abandoned colonies and turn them into mutually supporting forward bases. Domina’s allies then send ten million Orc warships against the race. Zhang Fan uses concealed forces, ground fighting, and Shapeshifting Insect decoys to trap the attackers between two planets 92 102 105 107.

Half the defeated force is allowed to leave; those remaining are forcibly transformed into Beast-Fusion Insects. Subsequent bounty-hunter campaigns are undermined through coerced alliances and paid defections, culminating in the Four-Race Alliance with the Bido, Geshu, and Quisha 108 118 123 124.

Western Expansion and the Hidden Milky Way

Zhang Fan sends armies outward in eleven directions, turning the race into a major Western Realm power. Its sudden disappearance later destabilizes the realm and triggers searches by former rivals and allies alike 142 143 149.

Inside the sealed Milky Way, the race constructs layered defenses and establishes a lunar base to supervise humanity. Research discovers unusual human genetic, magical, qi, and Bio-Boosted Armor potential 149.

Human-template research then crosses Zhang Fan’s limits. After Nexis secretly experiments on living humans and produces uncontrollable mutants, he exiles her to Pluto and halts all human-evolution projects. He distinguishes permitted use of human genes from forbidden direct experimentation on humans 154.

Return, Reorganization, and Southern Conquest

The race reappears in alliance with the Dragon and Beast forces, attacking the Dusk Song Legion and pursuing its survivors to Lamya’s refuge. Zhang Fan makes continued cooperation conditional on the Dragon Race staying out of the Milky Way after the Western Realm Great Emperor’s defeat 161.

After the battle, he reorganizes the Western Realm and publicly portrays the campaign as the suppression of Lamya’s rebellion. Later, he redirects the Ink Race toward Jiertai and uses the distraction to pursue Southern Realm resources and expansion 166 175.

Southern fighting exposes weaknesses against coordinated enemy air forces and disorientation weapons. The Dragon Breath evolution temporarily collapses the race and delays the campaign, but its members revive stronger. By the later alliance discussions, almost the entire Southern Universe belongs to the Insect Race 181 194 216.

Vitter Universe and Ilis

The race enters the Vitter Universe through Origin Star and builds a locally adapted biological system. It defeats M2 through electrical gene research and F3 through false death and meteorite infiltration, then pauses expansion to connect its occupied worlds defensively 218 219.

The Barton People become supplied vanguard allies, but Zhang Fan restricts their deployment and demands preservation of conquered biological resources. On Ilis, giant ants and bees turn an expected conquest into a prolonged struggle; assimilating the ant queen provides a viable local army 221 223 224.

The Mechanical Dawnlight Barton kills the Three-Headed Dragon, unlocking stronger armor and elemental units. After overrunning Ilyss, the race makes it its main base, supported by six major planets. Plague then compels Zhang Fan to join Varagon’s future campaign, granting resources and a ten-thousand-year preparation period 227 228.

Lost Clans and the Zhang Hongjun Conflict

On Demihaila, Zhang Fan discovers naturally evolved insect kingdoms descended from his race. He restores Kaina’s regeneration, brings Agard’s predatory clan back under his authority, and orders the former rivals to unite for planetary conquest 232 233.

God-gene research produces Zhang Hongjun, whom Zhang Fan names and trains for twelve years. Hongjun later becomes an opponent: the Insect Race supports elemental reunification, manipulates the Black Market and other factions, and builds a coalition against his claimed divinity 244 299 300.

Humanity and the Auroran Infiltration

The Human Emperor Plan assigns Matriarchs and Beast God Generals to train a ruler capable of uniting Earth. Zhang Fan offers the successful trainer a galaxy to conquer, while Weasel prepares the poison-protected Kunlun training site 319.

Against the Aurorans, the race captures and transforms a countermeasure installation, then uses Brain Bugs to prepare an apparent defection. Costly staged fighting makes its public allegiance convincing while concealed parasites spread through Auroran command and vanguard forces 330 332 333 335 337.

After humanity successfully conquers Mlak, Zhang Fan decides it can develop independently and withdraws the race to the Southern Realm. The handover includes a hidden subconscious fear intended to discourage human expansion into insect territory. Although some humans interpret the departure as liberation from control, neighboring civilizations remain cautious because the Insect Race continues watching humanity and may retaliate against anyone who cripples it 356 357.

External Relationships

  • Humanity — The race’s protected civilization and Zhang Fan’s overriding priority. Its support includes territorial defense, research, ruler training, and military development, followed by a controlled withdrawal 149 194 319 356.
  • Asha People — Early treaty partners in territorial settlement and biological technology; their population attempts to aid the insects during the race-wide collapse after a thousand years of peaceful relations 8 194.
  • Locarno — Biotechnology partners receiving settlement rights and a century of protection in exchange for fleet upgrades; openly support the later anti-Domina coalition 88 124.
  • Dragon Race — Recurring allies whose cooperation depends on Zhang Fan’s usefulness in freeing their sealed lord. Zhang Fan insists on explicit protection guarantees and Milky Way exclusion terms 87 161.
  • Domina — Patron of Nexis’s publicly recognized Western faction and enemy of Zhang Fan’s Northern expansion. Her bounty, embargo, and Orc-backed campaign attempt to contain him 90 101 112 124.
  • Bido, Geshu, and Quisha — Partners in the Four-Race “Brother Nations” pact. Zhang Fan treats the alliance as mutual advantage rather than genuine trust 124.
  • Barton People — Autonomous vanguard allies supplied in exchange for conquered planets. Badara later pledges lasting allegiance after Zhang Fan promises to preserve her people 221 227.
  • Varagon and Plague — Powerful Vitter patrons whose demand for participation in a future universal offensive is difficult to refuse; Zhang Fan suspects the promised resources conceal an effort to use his race against resistant factions 228.
  • Element Race — Receives warships and organizational backing in exchange for support against Zhang Hongjun 299 300.
  • Aurorans — Targets of Brain Bug infiltration and a deliberately staged allegiance intended to strike their organization from within 332 333 335 337.

Reputation and Rule

The Insect Race rules through overwhelming military strength, assimilation, and the threat of extermination. Some favored peoples are allowed to develop without enslavement, but even these populations understand that displeasing the race can bring destruction 216.

Its reputation is not uniform. Advanced civilizations associate it with barbarity and disaster, while Brocade civilians experience improved technology and living standards under its rule. Asha, Nagang, and Lilvara populations attempt to protect helpless insects during the race-wide evolutionary crisis, whereas other former subjects use the same opportunity to rebel 143 180 194.

After Zhang Fan becomes the Southern Realm’s Great Emperor, alien visitors still avoid encouraging humanity’s hostility toward him. They regard the Overlord as volatile, cunning, and capable of exterminating entire races; his continued protection of humanity consequently influences Northern Realm diplomacy even after the insects leave the Milky Way 357.

Notable Quotes

“If this is the end of the Insect Race, please ensure humanity survives. That is the Overlord’s only wish.”
— Shusha 194

“The Insect Race is invincible in battle and unstoppable in conquest. You Matriarchs need to assess the battlefield and make the most effective decisions.”
— Zhang Fan, reprimanding reckless commanders 60
