Background / History
Naruto was born to Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki during an attack in which the Nine-Tails was extracted from Kushina and unleashed. Tsunade saved Kushina through the development of Yang Release, but Konoha publicly announced her death and claimed that its Nine-Tails jinchūriki had been replaced. Naruto later learns from Kurama that Kushina may still be alive, and Minato promises that Naruto may meet her if he becomes a Chunin 139 146 147 222 229.
Unlike his original circumstances, Naruto grows up well-fed, well-dressed, and able to train diligently. His Uzumaki heritage gives him chakra reserves several times greater than Sasuke's even before he draws on Kurama's power 196.
He graduates from the Academy and joins Team 7 with Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno under Kakashi Hatake. His early missions expose him to elite shinobi and reveal the gap between his own strength and the wider Ninja World, motivating him to pursue stronger ninjutsu 190 191 195 200.
Personality
Naruto is loud, impatient, and openly ambitious. He repeatedly complains about low-ranking missions, demands greater challenges, and even invokes his relationship with the Fourth Hokage when asking for a C-rank assignment 191 192.
Despite this immaturity, he is determined to fight with his own power. When Kurama offers him strength during the Chunin Exams, Naruto initially refuses to rely on the tailed beast because he believes it killed Kushina. His eventual cooperation with Kurama is built on communication and necessity rather than surrendering control 222.
Combat repeatedly makes Naruto more thoughtful. He begins using Shadow Clones as decoys, shields, and delivery systems for Rasengan attacks instead of relying solely on overwhelming numbers 220 230.
Abilities & Skills
Immense Chakra Reserves
Naruto possesses unusually large chakra reserves from both his Uzumaki lineage and his status as Kurama's jinchūriki.
- His natural chakra reserves are stated to exceed Sasuke's by several times 196.
- He can produce more than thirty Shadow Clones without immediately exhausting himself 212 220.
- His chakra output makes even a C-rank Wind Release technique powerful enough to force Hōzuki Suigetsu back more than ten meters 196.
- His large reserves allow him to brute-force techniques that would be impractical for ordinary Genin 200.
Kurama's Chakra
Naruto houses Kurama, the Nine-Tails, and gradually develops a cooperative relationship with it.
- Kurama can lend Naruto chakra, forming a red chakra cloak and fox-claw-like arms 222.
- Naruto can enter tailed states, including a Three-Tails state described as near Kage-level 223.
- He permits Kurama's full release to battle Shukaku, trusting Kurama to protect Sasuke and Sakura 237.
- At a later point, Naruto can mobilize power no greater than the Three-Tails state at will 494.
- His reliance on Kurama is a weakness against powerful ocular genjutsu; Kabuto immobilizes him through Mangekyo Sharingan genjutsu 261.
Shadow Clone Jutsu
Naruto's signature technique is the Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu, which he uses at a scale unavailable to most shinobi.
- Creates large groups of clones to overwhelm, distract, and protect against opponents 207 212.
- Uses clones to assist in forming Rasengan attacks 208 220.
- Learns to employ clones as tactical decoys, including sending a clone carrying a Rasengan to mislead Haku 230.
- Clones can be rapidly cleared by opponents with superior speed, precision, or area attacks 212 221.
Rasengan and Wind Release
Naruto pursues the Rasengan as his principal finishing technique after recognizing his lack of decisive offensive power.
- Learns the Rasengan through Minato's guidance and uses it against Orochimaru 200 208.
- Initially requires Shadow Clones to form the technique effectively 208 220.
- Begins training to add Wind Release chakra transformation to the Rasengan under Jiraiya 265.
- Uses Wind Release: Wind Blade, amplifying the C-rank technique with immense chakra output 196 221.
Sage Mode Training
Following Sasuke's defection, Naruto trains under Jiraiya to develop power independent of Kurama.
- Practices Sage Mode while traveling with Jiraiya 264.
- Uses large groups of Shadow Clones to divide training among Sage Mode and multiple chakra transformations 270.
- His training is ongoing; no completed Sage Mode is documented in the provided material 270.
Relationships
- Minato Namikaze — Father and the Fourth Hokage. Naruto seeks both Minato's recognition and his strongest techniques, though he resents being kept unaware that Kushina survived 192 200 229.
- Kushina Uzumaki — Mother and fellow Nine-Tails jinchūriki. Naruto believes she died until Kurama reveals that she may be alive 139 222.
- Kurama — His tailed beast. Their relationship changes from distrust to limited cooperation, allowing Naruto to borrow chakra and eventually release Kurama in battle 222 229 237.
- Jiraiya — Mentor during Naruto's later cultivation journey, instructing him in Wind Release transformation and Sage Mode 264 265 270.
- Kakashi Hatake — Team 7's instructor. Kakashi oversees Naruto's early development and missions alongside Sasuke and Sakura 191 192.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Rival, teammate, and later fugitive target. Naruto is appointed captain of the mission to pursue Sasuke after his defection 195 249 261.
- Sakura Haruno — Team 7 teammate. Naruto and Sasuke both act to protect her when Reincarnators threaten her during the tailed-beast conflict 191 239.
- Shikamaru Nara — Vice-captain of Naruto's Sasuke pursuit team and its practical strategist 249 261.
