Qian Gao didn't know Feng Yueshan, much less have any access to Chu Yilan. He only thought the group carried themselves with an air of wealth and distinction. One glance was enough to tell they weren't short on money.
One of them looked familiar. Qian Gao searched his memory and finally placed him-the young heir of a media company!
In reality, that young heir was nothing more than one of Feng Yueshan's little followers.
In the silence, Chu Yilan spoke. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't expect it either," Shen Lian replied, his voice sounding even more pitiful. "Besides, I don't have your contact information."
Everyone: "..."
Feng Yueshan clicked his tongue and shook his head. What a delicate little flower, looking so helpless and endearing.
Qian Gao felt an even sharper sense of absurdity at the contrast. Hold on, who had been dishing out all that violence in the private room just now?!
Just then, Liu Kaisheng emerged, clutching his wig. Beside himself with rage, he shoved Qian Gao out of his way and yelled at the top of his lungs, "Where's that little bitch Shen Lian?"
At those words, Chu Yilan lifted his eyes. A storm was brewing.
"Rinse his mouth out for him."
Two bodyguards stepped out from behind him and seized Liu Kaisheng by the arms.
Before the anger could fade from Liu Kaisheng's face, bewilderment and terror took its place, leaving him with a thoroughly comical expression.
"All right, leave this to me," Feng Yueshan said. "You'd better take your..." He considered his wording, then continued, "little songbird and get his injuries checked."
After all, Shen Lian looked unsteady on his feet, as if he might pass out at any moment.
For a moment, Qian Gao thought something was wrong with his ears. Songbird? What songbird?! Since when had Shen Lian landed such a powerful patron?
The next second, Feng Yueshan slung an arm around Qian Gao's neck with considerable force. "Come on. You wanted to drink, didn't you? I'll make sure you get your fill today."
None of the five, Liu Kaisheng included, managed to escape.
Feng Yueshan wasn't doing this for Shen Lian's sake. Shen Lian belonged to his friend now. Whether he was a plaything or a passing fancy, that was their own private business behind closed doors. These nobodies had no right to put Shen Lian in his place.
Besides, hadn't they seen that Chu Yilan was angry?
"Shen Lian? Shen Lian!" Qian Gao called twice in a trembling voice before Feng Yueshan stuffed something into his mouth.
Shen Lian ignored him. Qian Gao was no good either.
Once those people left, it was as though they had taken Shen Lian's bones with them.
He leaned weakly against Chu Yilan, whimpering, "Master Chu, it hurts."
Chu Yilan said, "I couldn't tell."
Shen Lian was putting on an act to some extent, and Chu Yilan saw through it at a glance.
Yet the way he held his waist and abdomen made it seem as though he really was in pain.
With his drinking plans ruined, Chu Yilan took Shen Lian to the car and told the driver to head to the hospital.
Shen Lian wasn't about to waste this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, either.
At first, he sat beside Chu Yilan, then leaned against him. Even when he sensed the man's anger rising sharply, Shen Lian wasn't afraid. As though his strength had given out, he rested his head on Chu Yilan's shoulder.
The scent of pine resin mingled with deep woody notes filled his nose. Shen Lian loved it.
As the driver shot a terrified glance into the rearview mirror, Shen Lian laid a hand on Chu Yilan's chest.
Chu Yilan's tone betrayed neither pleasure nor anger. "What are you doing?"
Shen Lian murmured, "Master Chu, has anyone ever told you how impressive your pecs are?"
The driver wished he could find something to plug his ears with.
Chu Yilan snapped, "Take your hand off!"
Shen Lian acted as though he hadn't heard. "Master Chu, Zheng Ge was at today's recording too. I wasn't nice to him."
Chu Yilan liked Zheng Ge. That knowledge made Shen Lian deeply unhappy.
When Chu Yilan didn't answer, Shen Lian tilted his head up curiously. "You don't blame me?"
From this angle, he could see the man's clean, handsome jawline.
Chu Yilan repeated himself. "Move your hand, or I'll throw you out of the car."
Shen Lian immediately moved it, but not out of fear. His brows suddenly knitted, his face paled further, and he pressed a hand against his chest as an uncontrollable coughing fit seized him.
Chu Yilan looked at him at once.
Shen Lian felt as though his lung had sprung a leak. The harder he tried to hold it back, the harder it became to breathe.
Before long, a large hand was gently patting and rubbing his back, bringing Shen Lian considerable relief.
Once he caught his breath, Shen Lian leaned against him again.
This time, Chu Yilan didn't utter a single word of protest.
"Did you get into a fight with your manager?"
Shen Lian didn't know how Chu Yilan had noticed Qian Gao, but it didn't matter. His voice was hoarse. "No. Qian Gao took me there. The man in charge of Tianhe Advertising wanted to sleep with me."
He didn't hide anything. Chu Yilan could easily look it up anyway.
But then Shen Lian started spouting nonsense. "I thought, I have to keep myself pure for Master Chu, so I fought back."
Chu Yilan said, "Oh? How did you fight back?"
"If someone punched me, I punched him back."
"Taking turns?"
"Yep."
Chu Yilan: "..." Not a word out of his mouth was true.
Chu Yilan arranged priority admission. As soon as they reached the hospital, someone helped Shen Lian onto a gurney.
He had forced himself to stay conscious the whole way. Now that he was lying down, Shen Lian passed out.
As his eyes gently closed, a sudden, dull ache struck Chu Yilan's heart.
Chu Yilan had guessed the situation might be serious, but he hadn't expected it to be this serious.
Shen Lian had multiple contusions, two damaged ligaments in his legs, a large bruise across his waist with pooled blood beneath it, and a broken rib.
It had nearly punctured his lung. Somehow, he had still managed to chatter away to Chu Yilan the whole ride like a fan leaking air.
Even the doctor examining him couldn't help remarking, "The patient has remarkable willpower."
Anyone else with injuries like these would have groaned at least once or twice. Yet from the examination until he was moved into a ward, Shen Lian woke several times without making a sound.
In fact, others were having an even worse time.
Feng Yueshan had forced so much alcohol down Liu Kaisheng, Qian Gao, and the others that they were barely short of crawling out the door.
Feng Yueshan had been ready to let them go when Chu Yilan called.
"Where are they?"
Feng Yueshan glanced over. "Crawling around on the floor. Don't worry, they've had plenty to drink. I've avenged Shen Lian."
"Liu Kaisheng," Chu Yilan said tersely. "Break one of his legs."
Feng Yueshan sat up on the sofa. "You're serious?"
Chu Yilan said, "Shen Lian has a broken rib."
Feng Yueshan: "..."
Come on, buddy, now I don't understand you. Back when Shen Lian went against Zheng Ge for Zhou Tangsi, didn't you have a huge problem with him too? He's only been at your side a few days, and your attitude has done a complete one-eighty.
But Feng Yueshan was also a little pleased. Ever since Chu Yilan's appearance had been damaged, he had remained gloomy and withdrawn. These past few days, he had suddenly become much more animated.
If that was because of Shen Lian, Feng Yueshan could accept it.
Whether it was real or fake, if Shen Lian could lift his friend's spirits, Feng Yueshan would give him that respect.
"Got it." Feng Yueshan hung up and stood, holding a liquor bottle.
Watching Feng Yueshan, who looked like a cold-faced demon, Qian Gao couldn't even cry.
Shen Lian had such powerful backing, and he'd never known! He would never bully Shen Lian again. He would pay back every last cent he owed him!
Feng Yueshan brought the bottle down, accompanied by a piercing scream.
Liu Kaisheng clutched his right leg, unable to speak, curled into a ball of fat in excruciating pain.
Feng Yueshan turned in surprise and looked at the trembling Qian Gao. "Hold on, I didn't even hit you. What the hell are you screaming for!"
