Background / History
Wei Maopeng’s betrayal
Zhou Yuanlin is described as his family’s only son. He and Feng Yueshan befriended Wei Maopeng when Wei was twelve or thirteen, treating him as a younger brother rather than a subordinate. Zhou supported him generously with designer watches and luxury cars 84 85.
During fierce competition between their families, Wei arranged for Zhou’s car brakes to be tampered with in exchange for family approval. Zhou was out enjoying himself that night, so Ning Sixian drove the sabotaged car instead. Ning survived the crash, but emerged bleeding from the head and limping. The betrayal destroyed Wei’s place in the group 84 86.
Pursuit of Sun Binghe
Zhou once pursued Sun Binghe, using business collaborations as an excuse to invite him to dinner. Sun rejected a closer relationship because Zhou had barely passed Chinese and failed mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Zhou felt that Sun regarded him with the disdain of a “higher life-form” looking at a “paramecium” 83.
His initial attraction was to Sun’s appearance; experiencing Sun’s sharp tongue shattered his impression that the assistant was gentle. By the later extras, Zhou has long since lost any romantic interest in him and does not consider the failed pursuit inherently embarrassing 251 264.
Family responsibilities
Zhou’s business dealings include joint projects with Hengtai and a gathering connected to an upcoming port development. He also uses his social connections to introduce people across industries, including arranging an opportunity for a guest’s daughter to meet Xingkai president Kuang Chenghai 132 179.
As his father begins handing over authority, Zhou reports having less leisure time. He is shown inspecting a family-owned mall with accompanying executives, who appear nervous around him when he adopts a serious professional manner 184.
Appearance
- General bearing: Flamboyant and rakish, contrasting with Ning Sixian’s reserved, gentlemanly presence 21.
- Looks: Good-looking enough that his idle conversation with Shen Lian is distinguished from the image of two aimless delinquents 184.
- Professional presence: Looks convincing in an executive role when conducting a property inspection 184.
Personality
Zhou is a pleasure-seeking, outspoken socialite with an active love life. He describes having close companions of both sexes, and the narration identifies him as the member of the group with the wildest romantic life. He enjoys gossip, teasing, and drinking contests, particularly when Feng Yueshan is involved 145 185 200 251 273.
His swagger often collapses around Sun Binghe. He denies being afraid of Sun, then immediately surrenders when Shen Lian threatens to reveal his location. Nevertheless, he repeatedly becomes bold again once a confrontation has passed, including drunkenly declaring at Chu Yilan’s wedding that he is not afraid of Sun 184 251.
Zhou’s loyalty has a harsher side. He remains furious over Wei Maopeng’s attempt to sabotage his car, and he physically injures Feng after Feng exposes an embarrassing remark to Sun. He also shows genuine concern for Shen Lian’s recovery and remains composed while discussing a snowbound rescue 85 86 158 176 193.
