Background / History
Yang Qi and Ning Chunchi were classmates from elementary school through high school. During Ning’s most impoverished years, the Yang family provided substantial help. Yang’s mother was particularly fond of Ning, sometimes treating him more affectionately than her own son 11.
Entrusted with restoring Love Mailbox to its former popularity, Yang changed the fifth season’s casting strategy. Instead of relying on ordinary participants, he invited established figures from entertainment, business, and sports who already had public followings. He recruited Ning through their longstanding friendship; Ning also joined following encouragement from Yang’s mother to find a partner 3 11.
Jiang Yumiao was Yang’s deliberate exception to the celebrity-heavy lineup. Despite Jiang’s obscurity as a novelist, Yang insisted on giving him a guest slot because he knew the face hidden beneath Jiang’s glasses would attract attention 3.
Appearance
- Handsome face: Noted while he watches Jiang on the production monitors 3.
- Vacation-style clothing: Wears a floral shirt and sunglasses for the yacht outing 31.
- Party styling: Changes into flashy burgundy glasses and styles his hair for the yacht music party; the look complements his laid-back, carefree air 33.
Personality
Yang is playful and deliberately provocative in his work. His mischievous smiles often precede a new challenge or romantic complication, making the guests wary of apparently generous rewards. He openly believes that jealousy, frustrated longing, and romantic rivalry make better television than an uncomplicated mutual attraction 24 31 45.
His concern for the guests is nevertheless genuine. After Jiang’s unexpected heat, he prioritizes Jiang’s health over additional footage and permits filming to continue only with instructions to stop if Jiang feels unwell. He later reminds Jiang that he can refuse Ning’s advances and should never force himself to accept something unwanted 17 41.
Yang also wants his old friend Ning to find lasting love. Although Ning’s refusal to follow anyone but Jiang frustrates him professionally, Yang privately feels that helping Ning find the love of his life would make his work worthwhile. He feels guilty about having drawn such a busy friend into the show 22.
