Feng Ze stayed where he was, staring out through the gate.
The director checked the time, bent down, and spoke again. "Little Ze, it's almost midnight."
"Be good and go back inside."
"Even if your friend comes, it won't be until tomorrow."
Feng Ze frowned slightly, a stubborn edge in his voice. He seemed to be speaking to the director, but also to himself. "He'll come."
"He promised me."
The director opened her mouth, but no words came out.
She didn't know how to tell Feng Ze that promises weren't always kept.
After thinking for a long time, the director suddenly looked up. "Your friend is from the Imperial Capital, right?"
"I remember there was a terrible rainstorm there today. He probably couldn't make it here."
Feng Ze raised his eyes. "A rainstorm?"
"Yes." The director nodded. "It's normal for transportation to be delayed in a rainstorm."
"It's so late now. Even if he comes, it won't be until tomorrow."
Feng Ze's eyes shifted slightly.
There was nothing anyone could do about a rainstorm.
Of course staying safe was more important.
Feng Ze let out a small breath, reassuring himself.
Besides, Tao Zhiyan had called him just two days ago and promised he would come. He definitely wouldn't break his word.
Something must have held him up.
"Little Ze, it's very late." Seeing that Feng Ze had finally reacted, the director immediately added, "You need to get some rest now."
She gently took his hand and coaxed him softly. "What if your friend comes tomorrow and you're too tired to spend time with him?"
Feng Ze still didn't move.
He stared beyond the Orphanage for a long time before turning to ask the director, "Is it really raining in the Imperial Capital?"
"It really is." The director nodded. "It was
