Background / History

Origin as a fictional character

Tao Zhiyan created Feng Ze in his first, unfinished novel, drawing on his own experiences of childhood abuse. He wrote himself into the story as Feng Ze’s first love—a way of imagining saving someone when he had once desperately wanted to be saved himself. He abandoned the manuscript before its protagonists reached adulthood, partly because Feng Ze’s thoughts and actions had begun to feel unnervingly independent 78.

Tao later explains another reason for abandoning the story: an abusive former orphanage teacher deliberately died by suicide in front of him. The experience destroyed his belief that he could save himself, much less another person. After returning to Feng Ze, Tao tells him that Feng ultimately became the person who saved him 150.

Childhood

Feng Ze’s mother died giving birth to him. According to the account he learned growing up, the clinic doctor cared for him until he was six months old, after which he entered the orphanage. At seven, he had never attended school 161.

At Minhe Orphanage, a caregiver subjected him to violence, starvation, confinement, and deliberate isolation. She falsely told other children that he was contagious. His most severe ordeal came when she threw him into a sewer, where he remained for more than ten days among rats and a dead cat before Tao Zhiyan discovered him while searching for a ball 5 154 155 157.

Tao’s mother organized his rescue and temporarily welcomed him into her home. His trauma initially caused a frightening nighttime episode that she misunderstood as aggression toward Tao. Later, she listened to his explanation, acknowledged that she had judged him without asking enough questions, and reassured him that he was a good child 155 161.

Tao continued visiting him, challenged the other children’s prejudice, shared food, and gave him a watch as a keepsake. Feng Ze began looking forward to life again. When his caregiver tried to confiscate the watch and then threatened Tao, Feng Ze struck her with a chair to protect him. Tao’s mother confronted the orphanage and offered Feng Ze another stay in her home 157 158 162 163.

Chairman Feng and separation from Tao

Chairman Feng began searching for his son after learning that a former companion had borne his child and died in childbirth. Feng Ze’s initial hope turned to fear when he overheard the old butler discussing him as a potential blood source. Although Chairman Feng later denied that this was why he wanted to take him home, Feng Ze remained distrustful 165 166.

After Tao’s family disappeared, Feng Ze waited at the orphanage for another year, holding onto Tao’s promise to return. A visit to their former apartment revealed that the family had sold it and left; Feng Ze retrieved a discarded drawing of a mother with two children. He eventually joined his father’s household and asked the butler to investigate, but the search produced conflicting rumors rather than Tao’s whereabouts 177.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Black hair and black eyes, with long, narrow eyes and thick lashes 1 3.
  • Features: Sharply defined facial features; Tao is immediately attracted to both his appearance and his voice 1.
  • Build: Tall and well-built as an adult, with broad shoulders and long legs 30 144.
  • Childhood appearance: Tall for his age but visibly thin from prolonged malnutrition 162.
  • Presence: Projects imposing authority without needing to raise his voice or visibly lose his temper 1.

Personality

Feng Ze is controlled, commanding, and decisive. His brothers comply with brief orders, and he treats betrayal as a problem to eliminate rather than negotiate around. After discovering Feng Cheng and Madam Yuan’s affair, he immediately packs their belongings, overpowers Cheng’s attack, and expels both from the house 2 3.

His severity coexists with practical loyalty. He once accepted punishment to prevent Feng Yiqian from being sent to a psychiatric hospital. Despite later evicting Feng Cheng, he continues paying the family black card’s bills, investigates discrepancies in Cheng’s spending, and eventually offers him work at the company 84 113 123.

Around Tao, Feng Ze becomes teasing, affectionate, and conspicuously jealous. He notices missing daily messages, resents the attention Tao receives from other men, and openly competes with Yiqian for him. Yet he is also deeply insecure about losing Tao’s special affection: when Tao becomes formally polite, Feng Ze compresses his work schedule and rushes home 26 86 99 108 112.

His care often takes concrete forms—checking whether Tao has eaten, bringing roses, arranging private outings, and staging a restaurant prize draw to counter a painful childhood memory. Employees later credit Tao’s influence with making Feng Ze more considerate and law-abiding 54 70 136 138.

Abilities & Skills

Problem-solving

  • Solves a scrambled escape-room puzzle in less than a minute, entering the code before the others have even located the clues 29.
  • Consistently solves later rooms in approximately twenty to fifty seconds, bringing the group close to finishing a nominally five-hour attraction within half an hour 30.
  • His puzzle-solving ability does not translate into effortless gaming: he struggles with It Takes Two and follows Tao’s increasingly urgent instructions 139.

Physical strength and reflexes

  • Catches Tao by the wrist and pulls him upright when he loses his balance 1.
  • Dodges Feng Cheng’s punch, twists his arm behind his back, and throws him several meters outside 3.
  • As an undernourished child, easily defeats sturdier children at arm wrestling, but deliberately lets Tao win 162.
  • Protects Tao from frightening escape-room performers despite his own fear of darkness 30.

Technology development and business leadership

  • Builds the Smart Brain project from its initial setup through later management; its development takes four years 5 9.
  • Pursues the Superbrain’s goal of communication between living beings across dimensions 9.
  • Develops Superbrain partly to recover Tao’s memories, considering possibilities such as memory loss and displacement through time 132.
  • Secures research interest despite public ridicule of the Feng Corporation’s technological ambitions. Following the Superbrain launch, the company’s market value multiplies and previously halted projects resume 109 149.

Health & Vulnerabilities

  • His condition is linked to childhood abuse, particularly his prolonged confinement in the sewer 5.
  • Childhood symptoms include frightening visions of rats and dead cats, hearing voices, panic, and mistaking his surroundings for the sewer 155 157 161.
  • He remains deeply afraid of darkness as an adult 30.
  • Family taunts about being used as a blood donor threaten to trigger another episode 5.
  • After Tao leaves, overwork, poor sleep, inadequate eating, and isolation culminate in panic and recurring nightmares 149.

Treatment and support

  • Doctor Shen treats him and provides prescribed medication; Tao administers it after an episode 5.
  • Tao can calm him, though he reports having needed to knock Feng unconscious when an earlier episode became dangerous 5.
  • During his birthday crisis after Tao’s departure, Feng desperately searches for his medication shortly before Tao returns 149.
