Madam Yuan heard the string of questions and had no idea how to answer.
She was irritated. She had clearly just diverted both men's attention, so how had they circled back to this?
It was all Tao Zhiyan's fault!
What the hell was he trying to do?!
Madam Yuan shot Tao Zhiyan a vicious glare, wishing she could strangle him.
Unable to answer those questions, Madam Yuan could only take Feng Cheng's hand. "Chengcheng, this is a family matter. We shouldn't air our dirty laundry. Let's talk when we get home."
"Home?" Feng Cheng sneered and violently shook off her hand. "Do I even have a home anymore?"
"I was kicked out. I don't have a home anymore." It was as though everything Feng Cheng had suppressed for so long had finally found an outlet. "Did you forget?"
"Why won't you address my questions?"
Even though he had seen it with his own eyes, even though anyone could tell what kind of relationship Madam Yuan had with that man, Feng Cheng still wanted to hear her offer some defense.
Of course Feng Cheng was angry about something like this, but he couldn't live without Madam Yuan.
So Feng Cheng thought that as long as Madam Yuan explained herself and promised never to see that man again, he would forgive her.
But Madam Yuan did neither. She frowned slightly. "Why do you insist on interrogating me in front of all these people?"
Feng Cheng wondered if he had misheard. "I... I'm not."
He wanted to explain, but once his emotions overwhelmed him, he couldn't get the words out. His voice choked up, and his eyes filled with anguish. "You were the one who said you'd stay with me, that you'd only stay with me... Why? Why did you betray me?"
Feng Cheng was an illegitimate child, which meant his life had been worth less than everyone else's from the moment he was born.
His mother was a drug addict. Whenever she ran out of money for drugs, she would beat Feng Cheng half to death, then send photos to Feng Ze's Father, threatening to kill Feng Cheng if he didn't give her money!
Several times, Feng Cheng had sneaked out to ask his father for help, only to be sent straight back to hell.
Feng Ze's Father would give his birth mother money and warn her, but he never once offered to take Feng Cheng home.
So Feng Cheng hated his mother and his father. He hated them for bringing him into the world when they didn't love him!
Then Feng Cheng met Madam Yuan.
Madam Yuan wasn't much older than him, yet she had given him almost all her tenderness.
She cared for him when he was sick, comforted him when he failed, and affirmed his worth when the entire family thought he was useless.
It seemed someone was finally giving him, little by little, everything his childhood had lacked.
But what had come of it?
Had it all been a lie in the end?
Feng Cheng finally broke down, tears streaming as he nearly fell apart. "Why did you do this? Why did you do this behind my back!"
What Madam Yuan hated most was this childish temper of his. He understood nothing and had nothing to offer but passion.
What good was love?
And what difference did it make if there was no love?
She had spent three years soothing Feng Cheng every day as though he were a child! She had already done more than enough!
What woman would want to spend her whole life with a child who understood nothing?
"What are you crying for?" Madam Yuan was resentful too. "How have I wronged you? What haven't I done well enough?"
"Not a single person in the Feng Family respects you. Only me! I'm the only one who pitied you!" Three years of pent-up emotions finally erupted as she roared, "What exactly do you have to feel wronged about?!"
Her shouting left Feng Cheng stunned. Helplessly, he said, "But you were the one... You said you only loved me..."
Madam Yuan was speechless, her eyes full of disdain. Finally, she sneered. "Feng Cheng, when are you going to grow up?"
"Love? What good is love?"
"Since we got together, what haven't I done well enough?" Madam Yuan glared at Feng Cheng. She was clearly the one at fault, yet she sounded as self-righteous as a victim. "Haven't I fulfilled my duties as your lover? Haven't I slept with you and indulged your little bedroom games?"
"What more do you want!"
The onlookers grew uncomfortable at that, standing in the hallway like a bunch of students being punished.
Seriously, wasn't Madam Yuan being a little too explicit?
And wasn't she the one cheating? How could she be so self-righteous?
Madam Yuan genuinely seemed to believe she had done nothing wrong. Instead, she blamed Feng Cheng. "I've been so good to you, and how are you treating me now?"
"You brought all these people up here to laugh at me?" Madam Yuan pointed at the reporters behind him, her fingers trembling as she glared at Feng Cheng with bloodshot eyes. "Look at them! You let those people film me at my worst. Feng Cheng, are you trying to destroy me?"
Feng Cheng's eyes brimmed with tears, his still somewhat boyish face filled with grief and despair.
How could she... How could she think that of him?
He had never wanted to laugh at her. He had only wanted to clear her name.
"I wasn't..."
"You weren't what?" Madam Yuan interrupted him. "No wonder your mother beat you and your father didn't like you. You're completely unreasonable!"
"All I did was cheat! Do you have to drive me to my death!"
The moment those words left her mouth...
Everyone fell silent.
So this was what it meant to turn the tables on the victim!
And she was even using his family as a weapon against him?!
That was going too far!
Tao Zhiyan looked at Feng Cheng's clenched fists and reddened eyes. A line of text slowly appeared above Feng Cheng's head: [In one minute, he will jump out of the window.]
Madam Yuan and Feng Cheng had been together for three years. Feng Cheng had laid nearly every one of his vulnerabilities bare before her.
Now, those vulnerabilities had become weapons Madam Yuan used to attack and mock him.
Feng Cheng couldn't describe what he felt at that moment-heartbreak, perhaps, or despair.
He had been unwanted since birth. He had lived more than twenty years and accomplished nothing.
Now his mother was dead, his father was gone, and he had been kicked out of the family home for being with Madam Yuan.
And now, even Madam Yuan thought he was unwanted baggage.
What was the point of living anymore?
"You're right. Neither of my parents loved me." Feng Cheng wiped away his tears. His anger and grief subsided, leaving him unnaturally calm.
"You're saying all this because you can't stand the sight of me, aren't you?"
"Then I'll die. Will that do?"
With that, Feng Cheng took a deep breath. His eyes turned bleak and chilling, and he suddenly charged toward the window.
Everyone's breath caught.
Tao Zhiyan reacted instantly, rushing forward and grabbing Feng Cheng.
Feng Cheng felt as though his blood were boiling, a ball of fire churning in his chest. He struggled and screamed, "Let go of me! Fucking let go!"
"Fourth Young Master, I'm not letting you go."
If you jump now, this press conference won't be about Madam Yuan's affair anymore. It'll be a farewell to your corpse, and every last one of us will have to go to the police station to give a statement.
Then Tao Zhiyan turned to Madam Yuan. "Madam Yuan, don't you think you've gone too far?"
"Using someone else's vulnerabilities to cover your own shame?" For once, Tao Zhiyan's smile disappeared. He seemed angry. "Don't you think that's shameless?"
Madam Yuan glared at Tao Zhiyan. "Who the hell are you? Is it your place to speak?"
"What I am doesn't matter. What matters is what you are." Tao Zhiyan looked at Madam Yuan. "Whatever excuses you have, you're the one who deceived other people."
"You betrayed not only Chairman Feng, but the Fourth Young Master too." As he spoke, Tao Zhiyan glanced at the buzz-cut man. "And this gentleman."
"If you didn't like the Fourth Young Master, why did you pursue him in the first place?" Tao Zhiyan frowned. "Or did you think the master wouldn't give you official status, so you targeted the Fourth Young Master because he was easy to manipulate, hoping to use him to seize the family fortune?"
Tao Zhiyan's questions were too incisive. Madam Yuan faltered, unable to answer.
The onlookers behind them couldn't hold back any longer and began speaking up. "Exactly! You were the one who cheated first. How can you still have this attitude?"
"Whatever else happened, you cheated, didn't you?"
"And what about you sneaking around with another man in public? Argue if you want, but why attack his family?"
Madam Yuan's behavior had clearly outraged everyone. They all spoke up, condemning her lack of decency.
Normally so eloquent, Madam Yuan was now red-faced under their criticism, unable to utter a word.
Hearing so many people stand up for him, Feng Cheng felt his nose sting. He bit his lip, but his tears began falling uncontrollably again.
Tao Zhiyan sighed and reached out to wipe the tears from Feng Cheng's face.
Feng Cheng looked ready to shatter. His face was flushed red as he bit down hard on his lip and turned his head away.
He sobbed so hard he could barely breathe, like a homeless puppy.
"What attitude should I have? Am I his father or his mother?" Madam Yuan stubbornly refused to admit fault. Her pride wouldn't let her bow her head either.
Besides, so what if she had cheated?
Her cheating was her business. Nobody else had the right to stand there judging her!
Once she reached that conclusion, Madam Yuan began resenting Feng Cheng again. It was all his fault that so many people had seen her disgrace herself. "Feng Cheng, what do you have to cry about?"
"You feel wronged, do you? Fine. I'm breaking up with you right now!"
"If I break up with you, it doesn't count as cheating!"
Feng Cheng jerked his head up and stared at Madam Yuan in disbelief.
The venom in Madam Yuan's eyes almost pierced him. "You brought all these people here to insult and humiliate me today. Sooner or later, I'll settle this score!"
With that, she grabbed the buzz-cut man's hand. "Honey! Let's go!"
The buzz-cut man didn't move.
He wasn't Feng Cheng. He was already in his forties.
He longed for love, but he could still see things clearly.
He was nothing but a laborer with no power or influence. He wasn't a match for a woman determined to marry into wealth.
The buzz-cut man had thought that if he helped Madam Yuan get rid of Feng Ze's Father, he could take his place.
But reality had shown him that was impossible.
Even without her husband, Madam Yuan still had Feng Cheng. Even without Feng Cheng, it would never be his turn. Madam Yuan's ambitions were too great. To her, he was nothing more than a human dildo.
"Forget it." Having realized this, the buzz-cut man shook off Madam Yuan's hand. Though it hurt, he still said, "Let's part on good terms."
Madam Yuan stared at him in disbelief. "What do you mean? You're breaking up with me?"
Madam Yuan's heart suddenly began racing.
She couldn't fall out with the buzz-cut man. What if he told everyone they had murdered Feng Ze's Father together?!
Of course, the buzz-cut man saw the anxiety in her eyes.
So Madam Yuan wasn't worried about their breakup. She was worried about her own reputation.
Though he found it sad, the buzz-cut man didn't dwell on his hurt. "Exposing what happened wouldn't do me any good either. From now on, go your own way. That's it."
Never in her wildest dreams had Madam Yuan imagined that this older, lower-class man would dump her!
She gritted her teeth, but didn't dare say anything too nasty. Glaring at him, she said, "You'd better not regret this!"
Then she turned, intent on leaving this trouble-ridden place.
The woman strode haughtily around the corner.
A group of black-clad bodyguards suddenly came upstairs and blocked Madam Yuan's path.
Madam Yuan's expression changed abruptly. Unease rose inside her, and she cursed at them to get out of her way.
Instead, the black-clad bodyguards stepped forward and restrained her.
Alarmed, the buzz-cut man moved forward to help, but another group of black-clad bodyguards suddenly rushed him and pinned him down.
An uproar erupted around them. Feng Ze's assistant stepped out of the crowd, looked at the wealthy guests, and asked with a smile, "Everyone, have you enjoyed the drama?"
The wealthy guests looked bewildered.
Then the assistant stepped aside and gestured invitingly. "If you haven't had your fill, don't worry. We guarantee satisfaction this time."
"You can follow me down to the first floor for the second round of drama," the assistant announced with a smile. "This round is titled: A few things about how she and her lover murdered her husband."
