Mounted on his horse, only five hundred meters from the front line, Dude saw that the soldiers at the head of the charge had successfully broken through the enemy's line infantry and were pushing deeper into their position.
But Dude took little joy in it... His expression was grim as he surveyed the corpses carpeting the battlefield and the streams of blood that had carved channels through the ground.
At least a thousand soldiers had been killed by those damned muskets and cannons just to close with the enemy. By the time the assault force broke through, it was already running out of steam.
The greatswords of the Discipline Squad ahead of him were stained crimson, all with the blood of deserters. Their headless bodies lay piled into small hills behind the battlefield.
Dude's hands trembled slightly on the reins. He took a deep breath, then ordered the messenger beside him.
"Pass the order. Have the Third Square move up and relieve the Second Square. The Fifth Square is to keep advancing and fire at close range..."
"Report! Captain Doro reports that the enemy on the left is converging on the center!"
Alarmed, Dude hurriedly raised his telescope and looked left. Sure enough, the enemy was moving to the right, with more than a dozen military banners closing on the Second Infantry Square.
What were they trying to do? Cut off the Second Infantry Square's retreat? Or...
Dude had no time to dwell on it. He scanned the battlefield. Of his seven infantry squares, two had already collapsed, leaving five. Four were already engaged, and the Third Square was his only unused reserve.
It still had over eight hundred men, making it the square with the most intact fighting strength.
Should he commit them?
