A little after four in the afternoon, a police cordon went up outside an upscale residential compound. Traffic officers set up the tape while other officers shooed away the curious crowd. "Move along, move along!"
Ke Meng and Captain Luo squeezed through the crowd and showed their Investigation Bureau ID badges. An officer scanned them with a device, which displayed clearance to proceed.
"Please go in."
Ke Meng stepped past the cordon and saw two sports cars with their front ends stuck together.
The front of one car had sunk into the front of the other. It was bizarre, as though their front ends had melted and solidified again, forcibly fusing the two cars together.
I hope no one was hurt, Ke Meng thought.
The airbags in both cars had fully deployed, and there was no blood inside either cabin. The owners were probably unharmed.
No matter how the officers tried, they couldn't get the bystanders to leave. Everyone desperately wanted to know how the two cars had crashed into each other.
"What's the situation? How are the people involved?" Captain Luo asked.
"The owners are fine. They're still here."
The officer switched on his radio and called them over.
Ten seconds later, the owners of both sports cars were escorted over to Ke Meng.
Neither owner was young. Judging by their faces, they were at least thirty-five-men whose careers were on the rise, with the air of seasoned businessmen.
