"How could we be lucky enough to meet someone with a heavenly spiritual root!" The young woman rose with a bitter smile, but then changed tack. "Although this person doesn't have a heavenly spiritual root, he has something even rarer: a five-element spiritual root! The five-element spiritual qi I sensed just now was the qi he was born with. We were too far away earlier for me to sense it clearly."
"A five-element spiritual root! Doesn't that mean he can practice spells of all five elements?" the girl exclaimed, a trace of envy in her voice.
"Hehe! There's nothing to envy, Xian'er. We immortal cultivators must have spiritual roots to sense the spiritual qi of heaven and earth, and only then can we cultivate toward immortality. Every immortal cultivator's spiritual roots consist of the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. An immortal cultivator like you, with just one elemental attribute, has a heavenly spiritual root. When you practice a cultivation method matching that attribute, you advance triumphantly all the way, at an astonishing speed. Such cultivation geniuses appear only once in a thousand years. Those with a dual spiritual root possess two elemental attributes and are also rare cultivation prodigies, seen only once in a hundred years. Most ordinary immortal cultivators have a triple spiritual root. As for quadruple spiritual roots and five-element spiritual roots, they are false spiritual roots. Yet although a root with all five attributes is a false spiritual root, it's even rarer than a heavenly spiritual root. Its bearer can sense the spiritual qi of heaven and earth, but their progress is astonishingly slow. They have almost no hope of advancing toward the Great Dao. Apart from these, there are also mutated spiritual roots, formed when two or more elemental attributes blend and undergo a mutation. My ice spiritual root, for example, is one such mutated spiritual root." Seeing the girl's curious, envious expression, the young woman explained the distinctions between spiritual roots.
"Oh! So that's how it works!" the girl said, suddenly understanding.
"All right! We've lost quite a bit of time! I've found traces of the Five-Element Rainbow Ganoderma. That crafty little fellow actually burrowed underground to escape!" With that, the young woman took the girl's hand and prepared to take flight again.
"Ah! Wait, Master! What about him?" The girl looked at Li Xiaoya, troubled.
"Well..." The young woman paused, then suddenly realized. My disciple is still only a ten-year-old girl. She hasn't been in an immortal cultivation sect long, and her heart is still very pure. If I leave this boy to his fate, it might plant an inner demon in her cultivation state of mind someday. Never mind. Better to guard against that possibility! Although this boy's spiritual root attributes are terribly poor, fate has still brought us together. Saving his life will be his good fortune.
Having reached that conclusion, the young woman waved her sleeve at Li Xiaoya's fallen body. He slowly floated upward, as though an enormous invisible hand were lifting him. Once he was hovering half a person's height above the ground, he stopped moving. The young woman extended her snow-white hand and pointed a slender, pale finger. A streak of blue light shot out, striking Li Xiaoya and instantly enveloping him in a blue glow. With two soft pops, the throwing knives still lodged in his body shot out, trailing a little blood, but no more blood spurted from the wounds. The blue light deepened around the injuries on his shoulder and thigh, as well as over his chest. In the space of a breath, the glow vanished, and Li Xiaoya's body slowly floated back to the ground. "All done! He'll wake up shortly!" The young woman withdrew her finger and spoke casually, as though it had taken no effort at all.
Had Li Xiaoya been awake, he would immediately have bowed three times and kowtowed nine, crying out in astonishment, "An immortal!!!"
"Wow! Master! You're amazing! You healed him in no time at all?" Little stars seemed to sparkle in the girl's eyes as she gazed at the young woman in adoration.
"Hehe! Such minor injuries are nothing to your master. Let's go!" The young woman smiled dismissively, took the girl's hand, and flew into the sky.
What neither of them knew was that, shortly after they left, something white poked out of the ground beside Li Xiaoya.
Li Xiaoya suddenly felt something touching his face. His fingers twitched, and he slowly opened his eyes to find something white right in front of him. Startled, he hurriedly scrambled upright. The white thing vanished with a whoosh.
"Huh! Have all my injuries healed?" The moment Li Xiaoya got up, he realized something was different and spoke in surprise. He looked down at his chest. The red palm print had long since disappeared, and the throwing knives in his shoulder and thigh had vanished without a trace. He felt the spot on his thigh where the wound had been. What wound? The skin was perfectly smooth, without the slightest sign of injury.
"Was I dreaming!? But the holes the throwing knives made in my clothes are still there!" Li Xiaoya rubbed his head in bewilderment. He could hardly believe it, feeling as though he were in a dream, yet the two bloodstained slits in his clothes clearly proved that everything had been real.
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a white little creature hiding behind a nearby tree, peeking at him with half its rabbit-like head exposed. A thought stirred in Li Xiaoya's mind. Could this little creature have saved him?
"Come here! Were you the one who saved me?" Li Xiaoya beckoned to the little creature and spoke kindly.
As though sensing Li Xiaoya's goodwill, the little fellow hesitated briefly, then slowly emerged. The creature stood only about a foot tall and was covered in snow-white downy fur. A pair of large rabbit ears sprouted from a small, round head, and two big, shiny black eyes blinked constantly. The little fellow seemed remarkably perceptive. The body was unlike that of an ordinary small animal, consisting of a large, round ball with two plump, short legs. A peculiar tail trailed behind. It was peculiar because it split into five branches, each with a differently colored tip: red, orange, yellow, blue, and green.
Looking at the little fellow, Li Xiaoya found the creature indescribably cute and entertaining, even though he had never seen or heard of such a small animal before.
The little fellow suddenly stopped three feet in front of Li Xiaoya, tilted that small head, and blinked up at him, seemingly hesitant.
Li Xiaoya simply could not resist the adorable little creature. He slowly and carefully extended his right hand, wanting to stroke that cute little head. The instant he touched an ear, the little fellow darted away as though startled. Li Xiaoya saw only a blur before his eyes, and the creature was gone. The speed was truly like lightning; Li Xiaoya had not even seen how the little fellow disappeared.
"Hey! Don't go!" Li Xiaoya cried hastily. He quickly stood and looked all around, but could find no trace of the little fellow. His heart sank in disappointment. Suddenly, he felt a weight on his shoulder, as though something were standing there. He turned his head and saw the adorable little creature. Joy surged through Li Xiaoya's heart, but he did not dare move his shoulder even a fraction, afraid the little fellow would run away again.
Li Xiaoya wanted to stroke the little fellow, but feared the creature would flee. After a long while, his shoulder began to feel stiff, and he could not help asking, "Hey! Were you the one who saved me? What's your name?"
