Background / History

Wen Sulan is Gu Chenwang's wife. At the Sheng Family banquet, she learns that Shen Qingling has arrived with Ruan Mingyi and worries that he may be drawn into an engagement with Sheng Xia. Her initial manner toward Shen Qingling is polite but distant. 32

After Shen Qingling returns to the Gu household, Wen Sulan shows him the room once used by Gu Yijin. Shen declines it out of consideration for Gu Yijin, leaving her moved by his kindness and burdened by guilt over her earlier treatment of him. 48 She later gives Shen ten million yuan in pocket money, a black card for expenses, and offers to establish a trust for him. 52

Wen Sulan initially favors Gu Yijin, though she attempts to conceal it, and finds it difficult to close the distance with Shen Qingling. Shen nonetheless remains noticeably warmer toward her than toward other family members. 61 When Shen is harmed during the variety show, she blames herself for having failed him as a mother and resolves to become strong enough to protect him. 75

Personality

Wen Sulan is deeply maternal, generous, and sensitive to the emotional needs of those around her. Her guilt over Shen Qingling's past leads her to compensate for what he lacked, whether through money, protection, or concern for his future. She also extends care to Gu Yutang and empathizes with Jiang Yuning after learning about her difficult family circumstances. 52 225 337

Though once hesitant and prone to self-blame, Wen Sulan gradually becomes assertive. She is willing to oppose Gu Chenwang over Shen's safety, reject marriage arrangements that disregard Shen's wishes, and leave Gu Chenwang if he betrays the family. 75 85 226

Gu Chenwang's secret contact with Bu Yunrou devastates her and briefly causes her to view herself as a failure as a wife and mother. Wen Sulan ultimately tells Gu Chenwang that she intends to kill Lu Yunrou. After publicly affirming his love for her and planning to transfer 25% of the Gu Family's shares to her, Gu Chenwang agrees to help. 410

Connection to Fu Shengyuan

Shen Qingling discovers that Wen Sulan's mother-child pendant identifies her as the “white moonlight” sought by Fu Shengyuan. Once Fu learns the pendant belongs to her, his gratitude and conscience lead him to withdraw from Lu Yunrou's revenge plan. 412 413
