Background / History

Wen Sulan is Gu Chenwang's second wife and the biological mother of Shen Qingling. After marrying into the Gu Family, she held little status in the household and was frequently neglected by Gu Chenwang. During her pregnancy, she trusted He Fangmei, a Gu Family servant assigned to care for her, deeply; the later identity-swapping incident separated her from Shen Qingling for years. 11

After the Gu Family locates Shen Qingling, Wen Sulan is immediately convinced that he is her lost son and becomes determined to protect him. She is devastated by his orphanage upbringing and the betrayals he suffered, arranging protection for him even before he formally returns to the Gu household. 11 14 At the family meeting revealing his identity, she apologizes for the past and desperately seeks his forgiveness. Her heartfelt plea eventually persuades Shen to return home. 45 46

At the Sheng Family banquet, Wen Sulan meets Shen Qingling before his return to the Gu household. Already aware of his identity, she struggles to conceal her excitement and pretends to feel unwell to spend more time speaking with him. Upon learning he is not Ruan Mingyi's boyfriend, she is relieved, while also worrying that a marriage alliance between Gu Yijin and Sheng Xia could undermine Shen's future position in the Gu Family. 32

After Shen Qingling returns to the Gu household, Wen Sulan shows him the room once used by Gu Yijin. Shen declines it out of consideration for Gu Yijin, leaving her moved by his kindness and burdened by guilt over her earlier treatment of him. 48 She later gives Shen ten million yuan in pocket money, a black card for expenses, and offers to establish a trust for him. 52

Although Wen Sulan recognizes that Gu Yijin is not personally responsible for the identity swap, the loss of Shen Qingling leaves a knot in her heart that prevents her from treating Gu Yijin with the former warmth she once showed him. 11 61 Shen nonetheless remains noticeably warmer toward her than toward other family members. 61 When Shen is harmed during the variety show, she blames herself for having failed him as a mother and resolves to become strong enough to protect him. 75

Wen Sulan is deeply maternal, generous, and sensitive to the emotional needs of those around her. Though once hesitant and prone to self-blame, Wen Sulan gradually becomes assertive. She is willing to oppose Gu Chenwang over Shen's safety, reject marriage arrangements that disregard Shen's wishes, and leave Gu Chenwang if he betrays the family. 75 85 226

Gu Chenwang's secret contact with Bu Yunrou devastates her and briefly causes her to view herself as a failure as a wife and mother. Connection to Fu Shengyuan

Shen Qingling discovers that Wen Sulan's mother-child pendant identifies her as the “white moonlight” sought by Fu Shengyuan. Once Fu learns the pendant belongs to her, his gratitude and conscience lead him to withdraw from Lu Yunrou's revenge plan. 412 413

Shen Qingling's Disappearance and Return

Shen Qingling's disappearance devastates Wen Sulan.
