C1T-3 Fortress----
Tam was polishing his helmet. Even after several passes, he still felt something was missing.
"Enough, stop polishing it. If it reflects the light, it'll draw bullets."
Tam glanced at his companion, then put on his helmet.
"Do you think we'll win?" Tam asked.
"We'll win. We're humanity's liberators. They're bound to lose."
Tam said nothing. He simply checked his Autogun, its Thunderhawk emblem gleaming.
"I killed a woman yesterday."
"A woman? One of those people in Power Armour?"
"Yes."
Tam raised his gun and aimed into the distance.
"She killed Ek and Presi. Then I shot her and watched her fall to the ground, bleeding out."
"You didn't capture her? A woman like that would probably be worth a fifth-class merit medal."
"No. She drew her pistol and fired twice at me. I dodged fast enough that she missed."
"Then what?"
"She killed herself."
The two fell silent. The only sound was Tam checking his weapon.
"Do you think... the Emperor really exists? I mean, do you believe he's a god?"
"No. If he really were a god, he should have saved my little sister instead of watching those dark witches take her away." (Witch: the term human civilians used for Aeldari adept at wielding psyker power.)
Suddenly, red warnings flashed onto the displays before them, accompanied by the sergeant's shouts.
"Incoming artillery!------"
Both immediately rolled down from the parapet and scrambled into the bomb shelter.
Soon, shells whistled across the sky and slammed into the position, blasting weapons that had not been brought inside and assorted debris into the air.
The Dawn Army soldiers huddled inside the bomb shelters. Even in full suits of shock-absorbing armour, they felt as though some force had gripped their hearts.
The bombardment stopped after just five or six minutes.
