Background / History

Discovery of Bona Plena

While observing the Warp, the Emperor entered a dimensional rift leading to another universe. He found the remains of an extinct humanity whose technology surpassed even the Age of Technology, fought through its supernatural guardians, and escaped with their sacred relic: a living infant. His disappearance lasted three days, seven hours, and forty-two minutes, alarming Malcador and Valdor 1.

The infant possessed extraordinary psychic power and ancient human genetic sequences that offered new possibilities for humanity’s genetic programs. The Emperor named him Bona Plena, regarding him as the hope of a new beginning. He and Malcador arranged constant protection by the Custodes and Sisters of Silence to keep the four Chaos Gods from discovering him 1.

Unification of Terra

The Emperor continued his campaigns while raising Bona, repeatedly leaving the boy behind to fulfill his responsibilities to humanity. His orders to Terra’s remaining enemies were uncompromising: submission or death. Nevertheless, he approved Bona’s martial training and eventually allowed him to accompany the army to the front 2 4.

When the northern front collapsed under the enemy weapon known as the Reaper, Bona offered the eighteen Custodians guarding him as reinforcements. The Emperor warned that they could not both defeat the weapon and rally the scattered troops, but ultimately permitted Bona to proceed. After Bona’s devastating psychic storm, the Emperor caught his exhausted son and later agreed with Malcador that he would need to share some of his power with him 4 7.

Following Terra’s unification, the Emperor announced the Great Crusade. He halted further Thunder Warrior creation, redirected production toward Astartes, and assigned the surviving Thunder Warriors to defend the Solar System and train recruits. His plans for the Imperial Palace included homes and spaces for the children’s artistic and architectural pursuits 11.

A Warp incursion interrupted those plans. At the laboratory, the Emperor discovered the gestation capsules missing and saw Slaanesh throw the last one into the Warp. He destroyed the laboratory in anger, then feared that the attack’s real target lay elsewhere. Later, the establishment of the Council of Terra signaled his transfer of governing authority to mortals 11 17.

Rebellion and the Golden Throne

During the rebellion on Terra, Malcador took the Golden Throne so the Emperor could leave with Sanguinius, Dorn, and their elite warriors. Their farewell marked the loss of his longtime friend. Bona subsequently reached the Vengeful Spirit and found the Emperor gravely wounded after the confrontation with Horus 21 22.

Despite his injuries, the Emperor reassured Bona that the catastrophe was not his fault and warned him against surrendering to vengeance and regret. Dorn and Guilliman then concentrated on saving the Emperor 22.

A memory later revealed that the Emperor had ordered Magnus captured rather than annihilated. When Malcador proposed placing Magnus on the Throne, the Emperor refused to impose that fate on his son, accepting the burden himself 94.

Ten Thousand Years of Torment

The Emperor endured immense physical and emotional suffering on the Golden Throne. When Bona’s vessel encountered him in the Warp, his towering presence brought everyone aboard to their knees. He offered only a sorrowful sigh before directing his attention toward the catastrophe around Cadia 27.

During Guilliman’s audience, the Emperor transmitted an overwhelming torrent of voices, visions, history, and knowledge. He charged Guilliman with fighting for humanity’s destiny, but identified Bona as someone outside their ability to predict. He expressly forbade a meeting with Bona before the “final moment” 93.

By the time his despair came to the forefront, the Emperor regarded himself as humanity’s greatest sinner. He watched followers commit atrocities in his name and recognized that even limited psychic intervention could unleash storms that killed more people than they saved. A duplicate embodying his deepest desires argued that humanity must escape higher powers even at the cost of extinction. As the Emperor’s consciousness faded, this other self took his place and promised to destroy the “false heaven” 198.

The God-Emperor’s Changed Rule

The God-Emperor subsequently manifested through Ecclesiarch Sidereus XXIII to prevent Lion El’Jonson, Guilliman, and Dorn from executing the High Lords. He rejected their evidence of Chaos collusion, declared that only he could judge the council, and summoned its members to the Throne Room. They emerged vacant and docile after an unexplained ordeal 207.

The Primarchs’ investigation suggested that each of them embodied part of their father’s emotions, desires, virtues, and flaws. This explained his emotional distance as the consequence of discarding aspects of himself to pursue humanity’s salvation 209.

After initially praising the Primarchs’ achievements, the Emperor ordered their deaths when they failed to prove their worth. Custodians and Weeping Angels attacked them. Amid the assault, the Emperor appeared to intervene telepathically, freezing the Angels and urging his sons to flee, leaving his role in the conflicting commands uncertain 244 245.

Restoration and Abdication

During Bona’s battle with the Dark King, a blazing Golden Giant intervened to protect him. On Terra, the Primarchs accepted that their father’s restoration required returning the parts of his humanity held within them. Horus activated Drach’nyen, engulfing the brothers and producing a beam of golden power. The Giant carried that light into the Emperor’s withered body despite being torn apart by the Dark King’s lightning 249.

The restored Emperor fought the Dark King while Bona prepared the decisive strike. When his sword was knocked away, the Emperor intercepted the enemy’s blade with his own body, buying the second Bona needed to destroy their opponent. The resulting explosion purged the Warp and closed the rift above Terra 250.

The Emperor survived and briefly reunited with Bona, praising his son before leaving to help the survivors. On returning, he found Bona gone and only his silver sword remaining. He then ended the civil war, announced the dissolution of the High Lords and Ecclesiarchy, and directed Terra’s government to follow Macragge and Cabalide’s examples. Removing his crown, he relinquished his rule and declared that humanity’s future belonged to humanity itself 250.

Appearance

The Emperor’s appearance is observer-dependent: he presents the form each person considers most perfect. His physical ruin on the Golden Throne contrasts sharply with his radiant psychic presence 1 27 93.

  • Golden armor and luminous eyes — His early expedition depicts him armored in gold, with eyes shining with golden light 1.
  • Black hair — Bona’s adult hair is explicitly compared to the Emperor’s 25.
  • Towering stature — His weight destroys a bed after his return from the other universe; his Warp appearance dwarfs the Lunar-class cruiser Guardian of Justice 1 27.
  • Throne-bound body — Guilliman finds a vast, corpse-like figure sustained by life-support machinery 93.
  • Restored face — At his final reunion with Bona, his face appears unchanged from ten thousand years earlier 250.

Personality

The Emperor combines scientific curiosity with ruthless calculation. He excitedly discusses the extinct civilization’s incomprehensible warships and regrets not bringing one back. In the same expedition’s aftermath, he considers the loss of ten thousand Custodians acceptable if another journey yields sufficient gains 1.

His affection is genuine but often awkward. He soothes infant Bona with an ancient song, embraces him after long absences, and plans homes for his children, yet struggles to express himself when duty forces him to leave. His refusal to condemn Magnus to the Throne demonstrates a paternal concern that Magnus himself initially fails to recognize 1 2 4 11 94.

The Emperor later attributes his emotional distance to repeated bereavement over his long life. He condemns his own reliance on foresight and recognizes that imposing grand ideals while neglecting individual needs helped leave humanity vulnerable to fanaticism. His eventual abdication rejects permanent rule in favor of human self-determination 198 250.

Abilities & Skills

Psychic Warfare

The Emperor can destroy major war machines and combat supernatural enemies directly 1 250.

  • Shatters an ancient warship with psychic lightning 1.
  • Uses sacred golden flames to consume enemies and burn away impurity 1 250.
  • Projects radiance that causes daemons looking directly at him to howl in pain 11.
  • Shields soldiers at the Gate of the End from Bona’s lethal psychic scream 21.

Telepathy and Psychic Presence

His mind remains overwhelmingly powerful despite his Throne-bound body 27 93.

  • Communicates knowledge, history, visions, and instructions directly into Guilliman’s mind 93.
  • Appears through Ecclesiarch Sidereus XXIII, whose body vanishes in golden fire after the manifestation 207.
  • Appears to immobilize the Weeping Angels long enough to urge the Primarchs to escape 245.
  • His communication can cause severe pain through the sheer volume of information conveyed 93.

Foresight

The Emperor possesses foresight but explicitly acknowledges limits to it 93 198.

  • Identifies Bona as outside the fate that “we” can predict 93.
  • Orders Guilliman to prevent Bona from meeting him before the final moment 93.
  • Later recognizes that imposing his foreseen outcomes on his children was selfish 198.

Genetic Creation

The Emperor creates twenty Primarchs and directs programs intended to produce “perfect humans” 1 13.

  • Bona’s ancient genetic sequences spare the project beneath the mountains numerous developmental detours 4.
  • The Primarchs contain parts of the Emperor himself, rather than being merely genetic creations 209 249.
  • Their final sacrifice returns those aspects to him and enables his restoration 249.

Limitations and Vulnerabilities

  • Collateral damage — Psychic intervention from the Throne can unleash destructive storms that outweigh the lives saved 198.
  • True name — His true name can potentially be used to stop or kill him. Valdor safeguards the memory of it in a soul-crafted necklace 154.
  • Dark King — The Dark King’s power consumes his light and overwhelms him in their final duel; victory requires Bona’s intervention 250.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Golden armor — Worn during his journey into the other universe 1.
  • Emperor’s Sword — Used to parry the Dark King’s black blade during their final battle 250.

  • Malcador — Trusted friend and administrative partner, familiar enough to scold him over his disappearance. Malcador takes the Throne so he can confront the rebellion 1 21.
  • Constantin Valdor — Trusted Custodes commander. The Emperor entrusts him with finding his true name and stopping him, even through killing him if necessary 154.
  • Horus — Son whose betrayal leaves a lasting emotional wound. The Emperor’s sorrowful sigh brings him to tears; Horus later organizes the Primarchs’ sacrifice to restore their father 27 249.
  • Roboute Guilliman — Son charged with fighting for humanity’s destiny and keeping Bona away until the final moment 93.
  • Magnus — Son whom he orders captured rather than destroyed, and whom he refuses to burden with the Golden Throne 94.
