Background / History

Jiraiya is a disciple of Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, and one of the legendary Sannin. Before signing a summoning contract, he once used the Summoning Technique and was transported to a sacred ground. This experience led to his connection with Mount Myōboku and its sage legacy 96 139 173.

He later taught Minato, who demonstrated his newly created Rasengan to him. Jiraiya approved the name chosen by Kushina after Minato’s much longer proposed name was rejected. When teaching Naruto, Jiraiya remembers Minato’s use of the technique to protect others and makes that protective resolve part of his lesson 197.

Jiraiya also became an author. Although publicly associated with Icha Icha Paradise, he particularly treasures The Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Shinobi, the story that inspired Naruto’s name 167.

Appearance

  • Long white hair — a recognizable feature that prompts Lin to call him “white-haired mister” 131 138.
  • Tall, broad build — Lin initially escapes his notice when tapping him from below outside a bookstore 166.
  • Roomy red coat — he removes it to cover Naruto after an exhausting training session 199.
  • Wooden sandals — their clatter accompanies his hurried departure at Mount Myōboku 194.

Personality

Jiraiya is theatrical and highly protective of his reputation. He introduces himself with elaborate poses, loudly advertises his status as a sage, and protests when Naruto calls him “Pervy Sage.” His repeated bathhouse peeping is defended as gathering material for his writing, an excuse neither the children nor Hiruzen accepts 132 138 139.

His reluctance to teach Naruto and Lin stems partly from concern over research and publishing deadlines. Once training begins, however, he closely observes their fundamentals, quietly corrects Naruto’s seal, and insists on chakra control rather than brute force 168 170 171 198.

Beneath the teasing, he is affectionate and responsive to sincere resolve. Naruto’s determination to catch up to Lin persuades him to teach the Rasengan; afterward, he catches the exhausted boy, covers him with his coat, and praises his courage. He also readily forgives Naruto for lashing out over Lin’s absence 197 199 201.

Abilities & Skills

Rasengan

Jiraiya can create a large, rapidly rotating sphere of blue chakra and teaches Naruto the technique through staged chakra-control exercises 160 197 198.

  • Uses a giant Rasengan to destroy Orochimaru’s discarded snakeskin decoy in the Forest of Death 160.
  • Begins Naruto’s instruction with water balloons, requiring him to churn the water using chakra rather than squeeze the balloon apart 198.
  • Recognizes Naruto’s successful completion of the first stage when chakra-driven rotation bursts the balloon 199.

Sage Mode and Natural-Energy Awareness

Jiraiya possesses a sage legacy associated with Mount Myōboku. His Sage Mode differs visibly from Lin’s horned, purple-marked transformation 96 173.

  • Detects the surge of natural energy near the Forest of Death and moves to investigate 157.
  • Notices abundant natural energy remaining in Lin’s unconscious body, then observes its disappearance when Lin wakes 160 161.
  • Suspects Lin’s transformation originates from Ryūchi Cave, but initially cannot confirm its source or explain its unusual aftermath 160 173.

Sealing Expertise

Jiraiya can examine and reinforce Naruto’s seal without Naruto noticing the intervention 171.

  • Identifies Nine-Tails chakra leaking through an otherwise intact seal 171.
  • Reinforces the seal with chakra directed through his hand, restoring Naruto’s ability to walk on water 171.
  • Determines that Naruto should not be using the Nine-Tails’ chakra at that stage of training 171.

Summoning and Reverse Summoning

Jiraiya summons toads and maintains access to Mount Myōboku 138 173.

  • Summons a human-height toad during his introduction to Naruto 138.
  • Provides summoning scrolls to Naruto and Lin; Naruto’s first attempt produces only a tadpole 171.
  • Uses Reverse Summoning to visit Mount Myōboku and seek the Great Toad Sage’s advice 173.
  • Cannot directly retrieve Lin from Ryūchi Cave after a sage interferes with the summoning scroll 173.

Shadow Clones and Combat Assessment

Jiraiya combines deceptive techniques with experienced observation 138 160.

  • Uses a shadow clone to confuse Naruto during their chase 138.
  • Assesses Lin’s sudden movement as exceptional even among elite jōnin 138.
  • Recognizes Orochimaru despite his disguise through his chakra signature, snake techniques, and killing intent 160.
  • His attack in the Forest of Death strikes a decoy rather than the escaping Orochimaru 160.

Hair-Based Defense

  • Lin identifies Jiraiya’s hair-based defensive techniques as something he would like to learn; Jiraiya does not demonstrate them in the supplied scenes 169.

Equipment / Items

  • Summoning scrolls — worn, carefully valued scrolls used to introduce Naruto and Lin to summoning. Lin’s scroll is altered through a sage’s intervention 171 173.
  • The Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Shinobi — a treasured, well-kept book with worn corners. Jiraiya shares it with Lin and later decides to record Naruto’s training in the work 167 199.
  • Red coat — doubles as a covering for Naruto when he falls asleep from exhaustion 199.
  • Hiruzen’s personal letter — recalls him to Konoha over an unknown Sage Mode; he destroys it with chakra after reading 132.

Relationships

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — teacher and commanding authority. Hiruzen recalls him to investigate Lin’s Sage Mode, assigns him the children’s training, and reprimands him over his conduct 132 139 168.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — student and frequent teasing partner. Jiraiya recognizes his connection to Minato, stabilizes his seal, and teaches him the Rasengan 137 171 197.
  • Lin Shishen / Uzumaki Linshi — assigned student and subject of his Sage Mode investigation. Jiraiya respects his ability, rescues him after the Orochimaru battle, and seeks news after his disappearance 138 160 173 194.
  • Minato — former student whose skill and protective resolve shape Jiraiya’s expectations for Naruto 197.
  • Kushina — remembered acquaintance. Lin’s appearance strongly reminds Jiraiya of her; he also recalls her naming the Rasengan 138 197.
  • Orochimaru — an old acquaintance and active threat to Konoha. Jiraiya recognizes his disguise and reports his infiltration to Hiruzen 160 161 162.
  • Fukasaku and Shima — toad sages he consults at Mount Myōboku. They examine Lin’s message and warn him about its powerful snake-sage energy 194.
  • Great Toad Sage — sought for guidance when Jiraiya cannot determine Lin’s safety; the sage’s continued sleep limits the answers available 173 194.
  • Kakashi and Gekko Hayate — fellow protectors of Lin. Both press Jiraiya for answers after the summoning incident, while Kakashi later asks him to seek further news 172 173 200.
