Item description: This was a Daoist scripture made of paper. Three characters spelling out "Upper Clarity Scripture" were inscribed in clerical script on its dark brown paper cover. Opening the book revealed Daoist scripture neatly transcribed on brown hemp-paper pages; turning to the final few pages brought the reader to the "Spirit Refining Chapter" and the "Void Transformation Chapter." Strangely, compared with the neat handwriting of the preceding pages, the arrangement of the writing in these last two chapters was rather disorderly, as though they had been copied in haste. Another unusual feature of this Daoist scripture was that the entire book was made of hemp paper and bound with fine hemp cord. At the time, judged by material alone, books chiefly took the form of bamboo scrolls, wooden tablets, and a small number of silk manuscripts; books made entirely of paper like this one were uncommon. Although this scripture appeared crude and simple, with tiny flecks of hemp fiber showing here and there on its pages, books made of this material were light and easy to carry-a rare quality in those days.
