Author's preface
Writing reveals the heart; music flows from one's true nature. Thus, kindred spirits are hard to find, and good friends hard to seek. I, a soldier, have little virtue, and all I see when I raise my eyes is boundless gray. Our author is purer and loftier still; contemplating that solitary blossom and its wounded spirit, I can only sigh.
I once learned a little of ink and brush, and so, shamelessly emboldened to rashness, I presumed to record the names of all our fellow readers, compiling a hundred-herb collection for those gazing toward immortality, and begging a place for it after the Immortal Road. When the years have slipped away, and the author's days have grown weathered,
May his hand pass through the Immortal Road and reach this piece; remembering all these readers, may he smile with effortless grace. Then my heart will find comfort. As the poem says: "Speak not of the Immortal Road's long and distant course; through water and clouds, to the sky's edge, we travel hand in hand."
I now wish to gather here the names of a hundred readers of the Immortal Road. Alas, my life has its limits, my learning is shallow, and my knowledge slight. I fear I cannot encompass them all, and can only lend my fullest strength, offering this in gratitude. Some readers, too, remain silent or speak little,
And I cannot know them all. This
