Background / History
Historical reliability
The Sky Screen presents extensive accounts of Hagoromo’s family and ancient deeds, but the Sage himself rejects some of them. Most decisively, he states that he never had a younger sister named Hara, despite broadcasts depicting her as Kaguya’s daughter. Her subsequent appearance as a real person convinces him that the force behind the screen may be able to alter reality 435.
He also denies that the scenes of his travels shown in a later broadcast are his actual past. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that the screen accurately captures the fundamental ideological disagreement between Indra and Asura, even if its details are embellished 484 505.
Rebellion against Kaguya
Hagoromo identifies Kaguya Ōtsutsuki as his mother and Hamura as his brother. According to his explanation to Naruto and Sasuke, Kaguya came from beyond the world, ate the God Tree’s fruit, and established a rule maintained by overwhelming power. Her later oppression led the brothers to rebel, seal her and the Ten-Tails, and create the moon 273.
The Sky Screen expands this conflict into a training and awakening narrative. Hagoromo and Hamura study under Gamamaru, but Hagoromo remains acutely aware of the gulf between their strength and Kaguya’s. When Kaguya forces the brothers to fight, Hagoromo grievously wounds Hamura, awakens the Rinnegan, and uses Gamamaru’s Sage’s Talisman to restore his brother 330 345.
Reconciled with Hamura, he rejects Kaguya’s offer to rule beside her because the God Tree’s growth is draining the world and killing its inhabitants. Their coordinated resistance eventually turns the battle against her; Hagoromo subsequently seals the Ten-Tails within himself 346 348.
Ninshu and the distribution of chakra
After Kaguya’s defeat, Hagoromo remains in the world while Hamura departs for the moon. The broadcasts portray him repairing devastated lands, aiding war victims, mediating disputes, and establishing Ninshu. His service earns him the title “Sage of Six Paths” and widespread religious reverence 350 487.
His stated purpose for spreading chakra is to connect people’s thoughts and feelings so that they can understand one another and overcome hatred. In the Sky Screen’s account, he develops chakra seeds from his primal essence and gives them to hundreds of disciples, substantially weakening himself in the process 274 498 499 500.
Another broadcast depicts him confronting the Celestial Dragons’ political oppression. He visits their Holy Land seeking Imu and pressures the Five Elders into promising to withdraw their forces. He later forbids Ninshu from ruling the world or participating in struggles for political power, restricting it to assistance, mediation, and problems beyond local communities’ capabilities 487 508.
Succession and family conflict
Hagoromo chooses his younger son, Asura, to inherit Ninshu rather than the exceptionally gifted Indra. He explains that Asura’s compassion and ability to unite others better serve Ninshu’s purpose; he fears that Indra’s leadership would turn it into a hierarchy where the strong dominate the weak 275 534.
The choice deepens the family’s ideological rupture. Hagoromo transfers his yang power to Asura and encourages him to reach Indra, while preparing him for the possibility that they may have to fight. Viewers interpret this empowerment as establishing the opposing balance that sustains their later reincarnations’ conflict 534 535 536.
Hagoromo describes the brothers’ chakra and hatred as enduring beyond death. He identifies Madara and Hashirama as their previous reincarnations, and Sasuke and Naruto as the current reincarnations of Indra and Asura respectively 275 276.
Final acts and death
The Sky Screen’s final account shows Hagoromo withdrawing from Ninshu’s administration as Asura assumes its responsibilities. Near death, he extracts, purifies, and divides the Ten-Tails’ chakra into nine independent tailed beasts. Treating them as his children, he predicts that a destined person will one day understand them and help them protect the world 543.
After a final reunion with Hamura, he prepares a Sharingan-readable stone tablet recording Ninshu’s origins, his sons’ conflict, and his regrets. Black Zetsu discovers it and plans to replace its truths with lies after his death 544 545.
Indra visits his dying father without attacking him, but vows to continue opposing Ninshu through reincarnation. Asura promises to follow and oppose his brother until they reconcile. Hagoromo admits that he failed to bring lasting peace, entrusts the future to Asura and his descendants, and dies 546.
Appearance
Hagoromo appears to Naruto and Sasuke as an elderly, white-haired man dressed in white. The Sky Screen’s account of his final years depicts an increasingly stooped body and a face marked by age 272 543.
- Rinnegan: Deep-purple eyes patterned with concentric rings 345.
- Earlier eyes: A Three-Tomoe Sharingan before the broadcast’s direct transformation into the Rinnegan 345.
- Pure Land posture: Frequently shown sitting alone, cross-legged, amid mist and emptiness 421 482.
Personality
Hagoromo’s central conviction is that lasting peace must come through empathy rather than domination. He wants chakra to connect people, not merely strengthen them for combat, and fears a world where supernatural power allows its wielders to rule ordinary people 499 508 534.
His idealism is persistent but inflexible. He continues to regard mutual understanding as the only lasting answer to hatred, even after Indra rejects that vision and viewers condemn his succession decision. In the Pure Land, he regrets his sons’ estrangement while still attributing it chiefly to Indra’s pride and stubbornness 505 533.
He generally favors noninterference after death. Accusations that he engineered wars distress him, but he refuses to intervene merely to correct public opinion. When Hara’s appearance exposes a force beyond his understanding, caution leads him to withdraw rather than investigate 421 435.
His restraint is not absolute indifference: he considers intervening if the living world cannot withstand Isshiki and later resolves to prepare a contingency against the Ōtsutsuki threat. His faith in Naruto as the Child of Prophecy remains a major source of hope 435 482 484.
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan and Six Paths dōjutsu
The Rinnegan is identified as the Sage’s ultimate ocular technique, governing life, death, and reincarnation 74.
- In the ancient battle broadcast, he uses it to discern an attack’s trajectory, weaknesses, and approach 346.
- His control is initially imperfect and improves through combat rather than becoming complete immediately upon awakening 346.
- Black Zetsu explains that the Rinnegan requires complementary yin and yang power; Indra’s inherited yin power alone is insufficient 515.
Senjutsu
Hagoromo trains under Gamamaru at Mount Myōboku and learns to combine his chakra with natural energy 196 330.
- Senjutsu enhances techniques, physical performance, recovery, and perception 517.
- The Sky Screen depicts him using it to restore damaged nature 484.
- He recognizes that its initial enhancement is insufficient to defeat Kaguya 330.
- According to Black Zetsu, Senjutsu chakra can injure him despite defenses that make ordinary attacks largely ineffective 517.
Yin-Yang Six Paths source power
Hagoromo can divide and transfer his source power to others 278.
| Recipient | Power transferred | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Asura | Yang power | Gains the strength associated with his inheritance of Ninshu 534. |
| Naruto | Yang power | Awakens Six Paths Sage Mode and receives the Sun Mark; immediately uses the power to save Might Guy 278. |
| Sasuke | Yin power | Awakens a Six-Tomoe Rinnegan in his left eye and receives the Moon Mark 278. |
- The yang power given to Naruto sustains life and repairs bodily damage, halting Guy’s fatal deterioration after the Eighth Gate 278.
- Hagoromo warns that neither Naruto nor Sasuke can seal Kaguya alone; their complementary powers must be used together 278.
Sealing
Hagoromo and Hamura seal Kaguya and create the moon. Hagoromo also contains the Ten-Tails within his own body 273 348.
- He entrusts Naruto and Sasuke with the means to perform Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei together against Kaguya 278.
- He explains that restoring the Ten-Tails, making a Rinnegan wielder its jinchūriki, and casting Infinite Tsukuyomi can release her 273.
Chakra distribution
The Sky Screen depicts Hagoromo developing a soul-based method of giving chakra to people whose bodies cannot otherwise cultivate it 498 499.
- He condenses chakra seeds from his primal essence and places them within Ninshu’s disciples 500.
- His intended application is shared perception and emotion, enabling understanding rather than competition for strength 498 499.
- Distributing the seeds depletes the foundation of his own power 500.
- The broadcast also portrays this distributed chakra as a means of observing the living world from the Pure Land; viewers extend this into broader surveillance theories 498.
Creation of the tailed beasts
In the Sky Screen’s account, Hagoromo separates the Ten-Tails’ chakra into nine conscious, independent beings 543.
- Creates Shukaku, Matatabi, Isobu, Son Gokū, Kokuō, Saiken, Chōmei, Gyūki, and Kurama 543.
- Gives them different forms and chakra attributes while emphasizing their shared origin 543.
- Sends them to different regions of the world, hoping their power will eventually serve its protection 543.
Postmortem existence and departed souls
Hagoromo survives bodily death as a will composed of chakra and observes the world from the Pure Land 272 482.
- Sasuke recalls him summoning departed Kage and drawing on the power of the dead during the Fourth Shinobi World War 419.
- The Uzumaki Elder fears that the Pure Land’s dominant presence could erase his identity, but admits he has never seen that entity’s true form 420.
- Hagoromo rejects the allegation that he engineered wars to harvest souls, explaining that the Pure Land naturally collects souls and chakra 421.
- Hara’s concealment defeats his perception, and he cannot explain the force responsible for making her real 432 435.

- Asura — Younger son and chosen successor. Receives his yang power and responsibility for preserving Ninshu’s compassionate mission 534 543.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Asura’s chakra reincarnation and recipient of his yang source power. Hagoromo believes Naruto is the Child of Prophecy who can end hatred 276 278 484.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Indra’s chakra reincarnation and recipient of his yin source power. Challenges his inaction and ideals; Hagoromo nevertheless entrusts him with protecting the world alongside Naruto 272 275 278.
- Nine tailed beasts — Creations treated as children in the Sky Screen’s account. Hagoromo gives them hope of a future person who will understand them 543.
- Black Zetsu — Manipulator working toward Kaguya’s revival. Hagoromo grows wary of its possible Six Paths-level potential; the broadcast depicts it targeting his tablet for alteration 517 545.
- Hara Ōtsutsuki — Presented by the screen as his sister, but Hagoromo explicitly denies ever having one. Her real appearance shakes his confidence in the world’s history 435.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Fourth Shinobi World War revelation
The Sky Screen depicts Hagoromo meeting the gravely wounded Naruto and Sasuke at the boundary between life and death. His admission that he has watched the world for a thousand years provokes Sasuke’s condemnation and public anger over his failure to prevent generations of suffering 272.
After explaining Kaguya’s seal and his sons’ reincarnations, he accepts that Naruto and Sasuke’s opposing philosophies both seek to save the world. He grants them complementary powers and warns that Kaguya—not Madara—is the ultimate threat they must confront together 273 276 278.
Suspicions of a hidden mastermind
Naruto first questions why Hagoromo omitted the Celestial Dragons from his historical explanation. Later broadcasts lead viewers to interpret Hashirama and Madara’s closely matched growth as deliberate management of the reincarnation cycle 292 365.
The Uzumaki Elder’s testimony about the Pure Land intensifies these suspicions. Sasuke proposes that Hagoromo has accumulated the souls and chakra of the dead for a thousand years, while observers speculate that recurring wars exist to feed his power. These remain allegations: Hagoromo denies orchestrating the wars and attributes them to human greed 419 420 421.
Impersonation and withdrawal
An enormous image of Hagoromo’s face appears over the Shinobi World during Hara’s confrontation with Konoha. Witnesses believe the Sage has manifested to intervene 432.
The later account establishes that Hagoromo did not create the apparition. Someone has appropriated his image and authority. Combined with Hara’s supposedly impossible existence and her killing of Isshiki, this convinces him that an unknown force is manipulating events beyond his comprehension; he abandons his intended investigation and leaves the crisis to the living 435.
Renewed planning and reassessment of his legacy
Hagoromo later decides that uncertainty about the screen is no reason to remain entirely passive and begins considering a contingency against the Ōtsutsuki threat. The resumed broadcast turns instead to his own life, making him anxious that it will expose—or fabricate—failures involving his sons 482.
The ensuing accounts trace chakra’s distribution, Ninshu’s political restrictions, the succession dispute, and his death. They divide public opinion between admiration for his sacrifices and criticism of his stubbornness, favoritism, and failure to reconcile his family 500 508 533 544 545 546.
