Background / History

Massacre Survivor and Early Revelations

Sasuke is left an orphan after the Uchiha Clan Massacre. Initially convinced that Itachi alone destroyed the clan, he dedicates himself to growing strong enough to kill his brother. The Sky Screen then reveals Danzō’s theft of the dead Uchiha’s Sharingan and orders to destroy their remains, giving Sasuke another target for revenge 1 3.

The broadcasts also reveal Uchiha Sen as another survivor. This overturns Sasuke’s presumed isolation, but the displayed future shows Sen attacking him rather than treating him as an ally. Sen’s hostility toward Sasuke is tied to his desire to hurt Itachi 4 10 12.

Injury, Recovery, and Defection

In the Sky Screen’s early Team 7 account, Sen severs Sasuke’s left arm. Konoha’s doctors save his life but cannot restore the limb. Sasuke believes the injury has destroyed his prospects of becoming a shinobi, killing Itachi, and reviving the Uchiha; Naruto and Sakura visit him daily while Kakashi commits himself to helping him 10 12 13.

Orochimaru exploits this despair during the Chunin Exams, promising a restored arm and greater strength before giving him the Cursed Seal of Heaven. Kakashi subsequently offers a more disciplined path through Sharingan instruction, Lightning Release, and swordsmanship. A month of training produces a confident Sasuke capable of piercing Gaara’s defense with one-handed Chidori, although Shukaku later overwhelms him and Naruto’s success renews his resentment 18 23 24 27.

Sasuke eventually defects to Orochimaru. At the Valley of the End, he defeats Naruto with the cursed seal’s second stage, leaves his Konoha forehead protector beside him, and walks away. Despite choosing power over Team 7, he refuses Itachi’s advice to kill loved ones for stronger eyes 33 34.

Orochimaru’s Pupil and Snake Squad Leader

Three years of dangerous training turn Sasuke into a formidable fighter. Orochimaru also challenges his understanding of clan revival: killing Itachi and becoming the strongest would not ensure that the Uchiha survive after Sasuke’s death. Sasuke accepts that descendants matter, but recognizes the threat behind Orochimaru’s interest in pairing him with Karin and exploiting his bloodline 36 37 38 39.

Sasuke has secretly investigated Living Corpse Reincarnation throughout his apprenticeship. Once ready, he exposes Orochimaru’s plan to steal his body and attacks. He reverses the possession attempt and absorbs his master, then recruits Karin, Jūgo, and Suigetsu into the Snake Squad to find Itachi 40 41 43.

His apparent victory over Orochimaru is incomplete. During the battle with Itachi, exhaustion allows Orochimaru to emerge from his body. Itachi seals Orochimaru with the Totsuka Blade, removing the hidden possession threat and Sasuke’s cursed seal 48 53.

Itachi’s Truth and Revenge Against Konoha

After Itachi’s death, Sen and Tobi explain that Konoha’s leadership coerced Itachi into massacring the clan while sparing Sasuke. They describe the brothers’ final battle as part of Itachi’s plan to remove Orochimaru, rehabilitate Sasuke’s reputation, and leave safeguards against Tobi 53 54 55.

The explanation shatters Sasuke’s identity as Itachi’s avenger. He recognizes his brother’s sacrifice but rejects the idea that Itachi had the right to arrange his entire life. His grief becomes hostility toward Konoha, and he announces his intention to destroy the village 54 55 56.

The screen shows him exhausting Danzō’s stolen Sharingan and escaping the Reverse Four Symbols Seal. A later account of the confrontation emphasizes his moral collapse: he impales Karin to strike Danzō, prepares to finish her off, and attacks Sakura and Kakashi before Naruto intervenes 58 267.

War, New Purpose, and Return

After receiving Itachi’s eyes, Sasuke gains the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan but finds revenge has left him directionless. He reunites with the reanimated Itachi against Kabuto, then seeks Orochimaru’s help in summoning the four former Hokage. He apologizes to Karin and, following a conversation with Hashirama, abandons destroying Konoha in favor of protecting and reshaping the Shinobi World 268 269.

Sasuke’s proposed peace remains authoritarian: he argues for controlling every tailed beast, concentrating power in himself, and bearing the world’s hatred as its sole ruler. Nevertheless, he accepts Six Paths Yin power and fights alongside Naruto against Madara. His Rinnegan later restrains all nine tailed beasts simultaneously 275 277 278 282.

The screen identifies him as one of the world’s two strongest fighters and a savior of the Fourth Shinobi World War, but also shows him imprisoned in Konoha. Kakashi proposes a pardon based on Team 7’s wartime achievements; Tsunade agrees while requiring Sasuke to remain a genin for life 74 76.

Later scenes show a future beyond revenge. Naruto discusses recognition owed to the Uchiha, Sasuke marries Sakura, and their daughter Youliangna inherits both his Chidori and Sakura’s strength 298 305 391.

Present-Timeline Responses

The young Sasuke initially approves of his displayed defection and pursuit of Orochimaru’s power. His certainty weakens as the broadcasts reveal Itachi’s motives and his own later brutality. Seeing his future attempts to kill Sakura leaves him shocked and guilty, although pride prevents him from apologizing 21 34 54 268.

Tsunade directly acknowledges Konoha’s wrongdoing without demanding forgiveness. Sasuke declines restoration of the Uchiha’s former privileges and home, and states that he intends to kill Danzō rather than declaring an intention to destroy Konoha. Tsunade also reveals Kakashi’s covert protection and leaves the brothers’ grievance for them to resolve 70.

After awakening his Sharingan, Sasuke learns that Itachi has been living nearby under cover as a dango-shop owner. Hurt by his brother’s silence, he searches the empty shop and storms the Hokage Office for answers 192 208.

Events subsequently diverge from the displayed revenge against Danzō: Itachi kills him and purges his faction after an assassination attempt against Sakura. Tsunade sends Jiraiya to explain privately that Itachi acted to eliminate threats to Sasuke’s future 311 315.

Adult Sasuke’s Arrival

An adult Sasuke and Boruto follow Urashiki through a space-time rift and arrive more than twenty years in the past. Sasuke instructs Boruto to conceal their identities, minimize interference with history, and protect young Naruto from having the Nine-Tails extracted 477.

Finding Itachi alive contradicts Sasuke’s understanding of the timeline. Itachi escorts the pair to the Hokage Office, where Tsunade explains how the Sky Screen’s revelations changed events, including Black Zetsu’s fate and the confrontation with Isshiki 477 479 480.

Appearance

  • Natural features: Black eyes, thin lips, and a cold expression; after three years under Orochimaru, he is described as tall and handsome 36 51.
  • Early future injury: Loses his left arm to Sen; the arm is fully restored by the end of his apprenticeship 12 36.
  • Cursed Seal Stage Two: Darkened skin, purple pupils, small bony protrusions around his back and shoulders, and black wing-shaped chakra 34.
  • Six Paths eyes: A Six-Tomoe Rinnegan in his left eye and a Sharingan in his right 74 278.
  • Moon Mark: Receives a deep-purple mark on his left palm with the Sage’s Yin power 278.

Personality

Sasuke is proud of his Uchiha heritage and deeply sensitive to humiliation. Following his amputation, classmates’ sympathy feels intolerable to him; asking Kakashi to teach his clan’s own eye technique likewise wounds his pride. He nevertheless chooses practical improvement over that pride when he asks to learn all three skills Kakashi offers 12 23.

His fixation on revenge makes him vulnerable to manipulation, but he is not consistently naïve. During his apprenticeship, he conceals his investigation of Orochimaru’s possession technique and waits until he believes he can resist it. Later, his insistence on personal autonomy leads him to reject both Orochimaru’s exploitation and Itachi’s carefully arranged future 18 40 54.

His moral boundaries change sharply across the displayed future. He initially refuses to kill cherished people for eye power, yet later sacrifices Karin and attempts to kill former teammates. His unconditional apology to Karin marks a return to accountability, while his apology to Sarada shows willingness to acknowledge harm caused by his own mistaken assumptions 34 267 269 186.

Even after turning toward protecting the world, Sasuke distrusts peace based solely on understanding. He favors overwhelming power and enforced order, directly opposing Naruto’s philosophy. He also rejects being reduced to Indra’s reincarnation, insisting on his own identity 275 277 278.
