Waiting for Sylvie, Odin's successor, to exhaust the trump cards Odin had left behind.

No one believed Odin had left nothing behind to protect Asgard.

Odin had died in Asgard's palace, not on the battlefield. How could he possibly have made no contingency plans during his Odinsleep?

Besides, launching wars at will consumed enormous amounts of resources, far more than these factions, exploited by Asgard for years, could readily afford.

Even if they gritted their teeth and tightened their belts to scrape together the resources for war, someone else might well swoop in and reap the rewards.

Timing, terrain, and unity.

In a war to conquer the Nine Realms, there was naturally no way to secure an advantage in terrain.

So they needed to wait for the right moment.

Clearly, that moment was the nine-star alignment!

During the nine-star alignment, the nine great star domains would form a strange, straight line. The barriers and boundaries between them would blur, or even disappear entirely!

Only under those conditions would the other realms, which lacked the Bifrost, have the confidence to wage war across the Nine Realms.

They could pass through the rifts between the Nine Realms into Midgard at the center, then occupy it as a staging ground from which to attack Asgard and the other realms.

The nine-star alignment was close, probably only a few years away.
