Background / History
Life in the Great Ning Dynasty
Ji Mingzhu was the cherished youngest son of Marquis Kangning, a general celebrated for defending the borders and helping the emperor ascend the throne. His family held official appointments and noble titles and enjoyed exceptional imperial favor. Mingzhu was permitted to attend the Imperial Academy and study under the imperial preceptor, receiving an education intended to prepare him for marriage 1.
Despite his comfortable upbringing, his training was demanding. He practiced calligraphy from five in the morning with a pouch of water and sand hanging from his wrist, continuing even when his skin chafed and blistered. His artistic accomplishments later earned him a reputation throughout Great Ning, and he represented the dynasty in contests requested by visiting foreign envoys 2 49.
His last remembered experience before transmigration was attending a flower-viewing banquet, losing his footing, and falling into the water 1.
The Modern Ji Mingzhu’s Past
The young man whose body he inhabits was switched at birth and raised outside the wealthy Ji household. His adoptive father, an electrician with violent tendencies and a drinking problem, abused his wife and child. His adoptive mother left when Mingzhu was eight, leaving him behind 1 32.
Although he ranked among the top ten students in his middle-school year, he never attended high school. He began working young, suffered underpayment and exploitation, and lost his earnings to his adoptive father. He eventually worked at a repair shop, where his appearance attracted customers; a photograph showed him smiling while repairing a motorcycle 32.
His friends helped him find jobs, shared food, and offered him somewhere to stay during conflicts with his adoptive father. By contrast, Ji Yonglin’s investigation into his childhood produced shame rather than sympathy: he considered Mingzhu expendable and brought him home to take Ji Zhian’s place in the marriage alliance 1 33.
Before the transmigration, the modern Mingzhu resisted confinement and the forced marriage. He jumped from a third-floor window into the family swimming pool in a suicide attempt and was hospitalized 1 3.
Transmigration and Forced Engagement
Mingzhu awakens in the hospital in a body that closely resembles his own, but with signs of neglect and conspicuously dyed hair. He gradually realizes that he is no longer in Great Ning and must marry Gu Shang, the feared head of the Gu family 1.
Cao Wanhua asks him to steal confidential Gu family documents after the marriage. Mingzhu rejects the proposal as dishonest, refusing to treat marriage as permission to take his husband’s property. Ji Yonglin responds by placing him under bodyguard surveillance until the wedding 1.
Appearance
Ji Mingzhu is tall and slender, with refined features and a poised bearing repeatedly compared to a polished pearl, a figure from a painting, or a little prince 2 4 7.
- Eyes: Clear, peach-blossom-shaped eyes, described as shining like cold stars; long, fluttering lashes 1 6 9.
- Skin: Naturally fair and delicate. His initial dullness and pallor improve with regular sleep, exercise, and better care, though his complexion has not fully recovered by the family visit 4 7 38.
- Hair: Initially red with faded straw-yellow ends; later restored to a dark color, described as black or dark tea-brown 1 35 37 38.
- Hands: Smooth, with long, slender fingers, delicate knuckles, and neatly rounded nails 34.
- Smile: A sweet smile that reveals a small dimple 34.
- Clothing: Favors loose, flowing, elegant outfits. Fitted modern outerwear initially makes him self-conscious 2 37.
Personality
Mingzhu combines aristocratic pride with a firm sense of decency. He refuses the Ji family’s theft scheme and answers their condescension with restrained, cutting remarks. His courtesy does not prevent him from defending his choices, belongings, or marriage when challenged 1 2 24 38 39.
With Gu Shang, he is markedly softer: affectionate, bashful, eager to offer care, and sensitive to rejection. He interprets marriage as a genuine domestic bond rather than merely a public arrangement. Gu Shang’s neglect and suspicious looks hurt him, even when he remains composed around outsiders 14 19 21 28 31.
His strict upbringing gives him persistence and high standards. Unfamiliar modern tools can undermine his confidence, but he responds by practicing rather than abandoning the task. He is also frugal, keeping usable old clothes and worrying that extravagant shopping conflicts with a spouse’s responsibility to manage household expenses 2 3 46 49 50.
His growing attachment includes jealousy. When he encounters a revealing photograph in Gu Shang’s social-media feed, he worries about his husband’s interest in women and compares his own body unfavorably with the woman pictured 44.
Abilities & Skills
Classical Education and Arts
Mingzhu’s Great Ning education includes music, strategy games, calligraphy, painting, the six gentlemanly arts, the Four Books, and the Five Classics 1.
- His artistic reputation earns him opportunities to represent Great Ning against visiting foreign envoys 49.
- He is confident in traditional painting but unfamiliar with modern pencil sketching 49.
- His brush-based training does not immediately transfer to pencil handwriting. After extensive practice, he can write his own name acceptably, but other names still expose his difficulty 49 50.
Cooking
Emperor Ningjia praises Mingzhu’s cooking as comparable to that of the imperial chefs. The Imperial Noble Consort particularly favors his sweet pear pastries 17.
- Prepares emerald or jade tofu, golden-edged crispy pork, and clear winter melon and meatball soup for Gu Shang 27 29.
- His tofu impresses Gu Shang with its delicate flavor and the comfort it provides his stomach 29.
- Uses cooking to care for Gu Shang after learning that he neglects his health while working 23.
- In Great Ning, propriety restricted how often he could cook before marriage 17.
Embroidery and Handwork
Mingzhu is an accomplished embroiderer whose skill is described as sufficient to depict a vast landscape of rivers and mountains 7.
- Buys fabric through Chu He and completes embroidery on his wedding nightclothes 5 6 7.
- Quickly weaves a delicate camellia ring from his wedding bouquet 7.
Tea Appreciation
His familiarity with fine tea contradicts the modern Mingzhu’s reputation as uncultured 4 15.
- Brews tea in preparation for Chu He’s visit 4.
- Recognizes premium Junshan Silver Needle by taste, surprising Gu Shang because of its scarcity and high cost 15.
Recalled Jade-Carving Work
Mingzhu tells Gu Shang that he was referred to jade-carving work and therefore needed to keep his hands free of calluses. He is himself puzzled by how readily this explanation comes to mind, leaving the extent of these inherited memories unclear 34.

- Uncle Chen — Gu household butler. Helps Mingzhu learn Gu Shang’s habits and prepares his meal carrier, clothing, and study supplies 23 25 49.

Trivia
- Maintains an unusually regular routine: avoids staying up late, sleeps eight hours, and rises early to exercise 7.
- His enthusiasm for modern sweets reflects their novelty; even as a pampered noble in Great Ning, he could rarely enjoy sugar outside special gatherings 9 10.
- Finds Gu Shang’s temper comparatively manageable because he remembers an emperor who could move from merriment to ordering an execution without warning 35.
- The intimidating “Wealthy Wives’ Required Courses” label is a tease: the classes are ordinary hobby courses, not an actual program with that title 33 41.
