After Island Kahuna Sofuo passed away, Hapu lived alone on a small hillside along Poni Path.
It was where Sofuo and Hapu had once lived together.
Sofuo had doted on Hapu,
and had put everything into teaching her, whether it was growing vegetables and Berries or raising Pokémon.
So Hapu had refused her parents' request and resolutely chosen to stay at her old home, with the goal of becoming an Island Kahuna.
Hapu had no rivals among her peers, so all her opponents were adults.
Combined with her competitive nature, this had allowed her strength to grow rapidly.
That was how she had come to be chosen by Li Wei and Professor Kukui as the Gym Leader of the Dignity Gym.
Hapu had originally been rather withdrawn, but she had improved considerably since becoming a Gym Leader.
Still, she would not hold the position for long, because her goal had always been to become an Island Kahuna.
Although her strength met the requirements, the Island Guardian Tapu Fini still refused to recognize Hapu as the new Island Kahuna.
As a result, Poni Island's position of Island Kahuna had remained vacant for a long time.
As she shared a Poni White Radish with Ash and the others, Hapu talked about her days as a Gym Leader.
"You came at just the right time. I was about to head to the Gym."
"What are you planning to do?"
Ash answered excitedly,
"I'm going to challenge Tapu Fini!"
Hapu shook her head.
"Tapu Fini isn't that easy to find."
Of the four Island Guardians, Tapu Fini was the most elusive.
"I came here to find Poni White Radishes. Now that I've found them, it's time to cook with them."
Hapu perked up.
"How are you planning to cook them?"
