Background / History
Supporting the Breeding Center
Lucario is Li Wei’s starter Pokémon and already has a broad move repertoire when first appraised. Li Wei personally taught him Ice Punch and Thunder Punch, while improved breeding skills and plentiful Pokéblocks later helped him learn Extreme Speed 3 10 911.
After the family moves into its new breeding facility, Lucario recognizes the financial burden of opening it. He recruits Arcanine and Metang into a “super sleuths” team to help the business, then leads an operation targeting people in the surrounding neighborhood 12 13.
His leadership develops into a continuing household role. He helps Li Wei manage the team, looks after Shaymin and Corvisquire, and assists Farfetch’d with learning. He also introduces Zeraora to the Breeding Center’s Pokémon and staff 276 533.
Obtaining Lucarionite
Seeing Steven’s Metagross Mega Evolve makes Lucario visibly envious, but he does not pressure Li Wei to obtain a Mega Stone. Li Wei notices his wish and begins pursuing a Lucarionite, following Steven’s advice to challenge the Battle Chateau in Kalos 120 155 191.
At the Chateau, Lucario defeats Viola’s Vivillon, earning Li Wei promotion to Marquis. Siebold then arranges for the Chateau to lend them a Lucarionite before their match so both sides can fight at full strength. Li Wei and Lucario deliberately save their first Mega Evolution for that battle 200 203.
Lucario defeats Siebold’s Mega Blastoise despite accumulating injuries. Following Li Wei’s promotion to Duke, the borrowed Lucarionite becomes their chosen rank reward 205 206.
Aura Training and the Aura Guardian
During the Kalos journey, Gurkinn gives Li Wei an ancestral Lucario training record focused on meditation and aura development. Wikstrom’s Knight Breathing Method provides another discipline, and Lucario becomes even more enthusiastic about training after receiving both techniques 232 239 243.
At Cameran Palace, Lucario senses the powerful aura within the Aura Guardian’s Staff. He later helps Li Wei, Ash, Sir Aaron’s Lucario, Diancie, and Shaymin stabilize the Tree of Creation, allowing Sir Aaron’s companion to survive rather than sacrifice himself 416 427.
Sir Aaron’s Lucario subsequently treats him as a pupil and shares his knowledge. The experience also humbles Li Wei’s Lucario: even after Mega Evolution, he judges his aura to be at most two-thirds as powerful as Sir Aaron’s. He continues practicing aura perception wherever he goes 444.
Protection and Continued Growth
Following the Regigigas incident, Lucario convenes the Second Pokémon Representatives’ Conference. Having sensed Regigigas’s loneliness, he urges the team to protect his sleep and spend more time communicating with him 604.
Lucario accompanies Li Wei during the Alamos Town crisis, detecting Darkrai and later helping cover the group’s escape. Witnesses subsequently report him fighting alongside Zeraora and Mega Diancie during the incident 667 676 693.
By the Battle Tower’s operation, Lucario trains against visiting challengers rather than relying solely on team sparring. After the previous year’s loss to Blue, he and his companions spend another year training; their resources and Li Wei’s special meals eventually help them overtake Leon’s Pokémon in level 1321 1545.
Appearance
- Mega form: Becomes leaner and more athletic, with red limbs and flowing fur extending from his head and tail 203.
- Aura sensors: Extend into two long, flowing black streamers after Mega Evolution 1130.
- Spikes: Additional spikes emerge from the backs of his hands and chest in Mega form 1130.
- Visible aura: Mega Evolution produces rippling aura that can appear almost tangible; at upper Champion strength, it resembles a blazing blue shroud 203 1130.
- Wrist accessory: Wears his Lucarionite in a dedicated Mega Evolution Battle Band 203.
Personality
Lucario values elegance in both everyday life and battle. He eats with a napkin and spoon despite preferring extremely spicy food, and his composed manner remains intact during his first Mega Evolution. He is considerate enough to keep his desire for Lucarionite to himself rather than burden Li Wei 3 120 203.
He treats the team as family. Instead of keeping the Gold Bottle Cap’s stat-boosting chocolate for himself, he divides it among the household Pokémon—including Milotic—and saves a piece for Li Wei 201.
His restraint coexists with a strong appetite for challenging battles. He sometimes chooses a head-on exchange over an easier victory, acknowledges worthy opponents, and refuses to retreat merely because of a type disadvantage. His long-term ambition is to surpass Cynthia’s Lucario, whom he regards as a teacher 200 782 1201 1246.
Abilities & Skills
Aura Perception and Communication
Lucario uses aura to locate others, assess their condition, and coordinate silently with Li Wei and his companions 200 667 995.
- Detects the powerful presence inside the Aura Guardian’s Staff and Darkrai’s hidden presence in Gaudí’s Courtyard 416 667.
- Tracks Vivillon through Hurricane and anticipates Cinderace’s attacks 200 1246 1247.
- Identifies Dread’s concealed position and unsettled emotional state, then shares his location with Zeraora and Darkrai 995.
- Recognizes Kukui as the Masked Royal through aura but keeps quiet to spare his feelings 1108.
- Scans large areas by spreading aura outward in ripples 1340.
- Limit: Aura perception does not reveal Palkia’s hidden presence above Alamos Town 676.
Spinning Swords Dance
Lucario reshapes Swords Dance through precise aura control, creating rotating swords that combine an Attack boost with an improvised defense 128 199.
- Forms six rotating aura swords to block Shaymin’s Air Slash 128.
- Spins the swords into a tornado that blocks and partly reflects Vivillon’s Sleep Powder 199.
- Performs Swords Dance faster after Mega Evolution 203.
- Limit: Vivillon’s Hurricane overwhelms the rotating swords and interrupts the technique. It is also described as less versatile than Counter Shield 199 200.
Mixed Offense and Martial Skill
Lucario excels at both physical and special attacks, supported by training, speed enhancers, and Li Wei’s food. Laboratory comparisons show above-average speed, stamina, strength, and special-move power for his level 128 203 342.
| Move or group | Documented applications |
|---|---|
| Aura Sphere / Flash Cannon | Homing aura attacks and ranged exchanges against Shaymin, Vivillon, and Mega Blastoise 128 200 203 204 |
| Close Combat / Sky Uppercut | Decisive close-range combinations against Sceptile, Mega Blastoise, and Heatran 205 723 863 |
| Power-Up Punch / Meteor Mash | Builds Attack during combat; both boosts contribute to his contest against Bruno’s Machamp 783 1112 |
| Bone Rush | Provides reach in melee, breaks frozen terrain, and finishes Hala’s Hariyama 205 783 1112 |
| Ice Punch / Thunder Punch | Coverage moves taught by Li Wei; a Swords Dance-boosted Ice Punch knocks out Viola’s Vivillon 3 200 |
| Extreme Speed | Rapid approaches, evasions, and breakthroughs through opposing attacks 128 200 |
| Earthquake / Rock Tomb | Disrupts aim and footing, creates cover, and supplies an improvised jumping platform 204 1246 1247 |
| Detect / Protect / Quick Guard | Defensive options; Detect and Protect are unavailable under the tournament rules against Bruno 3 204 723 782 |
Other documented moves include Calm Mind, Bullet Punch, Force Palm, and Drain Punch 3 219.
Roar of Time
Lucario can use Dialga’s signature move, Roar of Time, and carries a recognizable aura of time 745 1003.
- Releases a brilliant blue beam with Dialga’s silhouette visible within it 1003.
- Uses it after Dragapult’s Spacial Rend inspires him to change attacks; the combined strikes bring Zekrom down from the sky 1003.
- Its threat to Zekrom is substantially greater than his preceding Aura Spheres 1003.
Mega Evolution
Lucario Mega Evolves through his Lucarionite and Li Wei’s Key Stone, changing his Ability from Inner Focus to Adaptability 203.
- Adaptability strengthens moves matching his Fighting and Steel types 203.
- Li Wei and Lucario’s mutual trust allows their first transformation to proceed without loss of control 203.
- The transformation improves speed and accelerates Swords Dance setup 203.
- Limit: Maintaining Mega Evolution consumes substantial stamina from both Pokémon and Trainer 203.
Professor Sycamore’s tests record gains exceeding the researchers’ predictions for Adaptability 219.
| Measurement | Recorded change after Mega Evolution |
|---|---|
| Aura energy | Increase of 247% 219 |
| Meteor Mash power | 107.8% stronger 219 |
| Power-Up Punch power | 106.7% stronger 219 |
Meditation and Breathing
Lucario practices two complementary disciplines to strengthen aura and maintain control 239 243.
- Gurkinn’s Lucario Meditation Technique: Sitting cross-legged and sensing the aura of the earth, sky, and surroundings; focuses on aura rather than move instruction 239.
- Knight Breathing Method: A standing practice supporting composure, endurance, and resolve. Its controlled rhythm can help manage the increased aura associated with Mega Evolution 239 277.
- Continuous sensory training: Combines smell and aura perception during ordinary travel, following Sir Aaron’s Lucario’s instruction 444.
- Limit: The breathing method is a supporting tool, not a shortcut to overwhelming strength 277.
