The smell of blood mingled with gun smoke filled his nose.
They had driven a long way. Bamboo groves lined the country road, and everything was silent.
In that atmosphere, the smell of 39's cigarette was especially reassuring, but he was wounded.
Sure enough, 39 had paid no attention whatsoever to his wound. His sharp, narrow eyes gazed out the window as blood ran down his arm and dripped from his fingertips. His other hand held a slender women's cigarette, dangling outside the car door. His eyes were lowered, as though he were thinking.
Wei Yunmo said in a very quiet voice, "That was Orion, the Laboratory's ace agent. I don't know how he found us. I'm very sorry. I don't know what went wrong. I shouldn't have gone outside. I'm sorry. Do you want to treat your wound first?"
"Get out."
39 opened the car door and stepped out first, and Wei Yunmo silently followed him.
They passed through layers of bamboo groves and came to a small courtyard house standing alone among the bamboo.
39 went up and knocked on the door. A casually dressed man answered. He let them in without asking any questions, though his gaze swept over 39.
"I'll look after the kid. Go upstairs and take care of your wound first. Can you manage on your own? Want my help?"
"No need."
39 gave the man a critical once-over, then went upstairs alone.
The furnishings were unremarkable, just like any ordinary home. There were even chickens and ducks in the courtyard.
Wei Yunmo sat obediently on a stool with his head lowered. He could feel the man scrutinizing him even more brazenly after 39 left.
"Hey, Experiment Subject! What's your name? Oh, wait, I should be asking whether you have a serial number."
