Background / History
Family and Sect Standing
Nalan Yanran’s engagement to Xiao Yan was arranged by their grandfathers, Nalan Jie and Xiao Lin. Their friendship had been forged through life-threatening danger: according to Xiao Long’s account of the Nalan Family records, Xiao Lin intercepted a claw strike intended for Nalan Jie and nearly died. Yanran had known about the engagement since childhood, but did not meet Xiao Yan until her visit to end it 4.
Yanran became the personal disciple of Misty Cloud Sect Master Yun Yun. Ge Ye states that Yun Yun values her highly and has devoted a large share of the sect’s efforts to nurturing her. He invokes restrictions on a future sect master’s involvement with outsiders as justification for dissolving her engagement 3.
Engagement Dispute
Yanran arrives at the Xiao Clan with Ge Ye and three male disciples. While Ge Ye prolongs the formalities, she repeatedly nudges his chair with her foot to prompt him to address their purpose. Xiao Long notices and exposes her impatience, forcing the discussion toward the engagement 2 3.
When Ge Ye announces the proposed dissolution, Xiao Long publicly accuses Yanran of heartlessness, unrighteousness, impropriety, faithlessness, and being unfilial. His objections concern both the timing—after Xiao Yan’s cultivation declined—and her use of sect representatives to overturn a family agreement before the assembled clan. Reduced to tears, Yanran denies looking down on Xiao Yan and explains that she does not want to marry someone she has never met 3 4.
Xiao Zhan agrees not to force the marriage, but asks the Nalan Family to stop calling the two families longtime friends. Yanran then abruptly declares that she will marry into the Xiao Clan after all—but chooses Xiao Long rather than Xiao Yan 4.
Proposed Change of Groom
Xiao Xun’er immediately opposes the substitution. Yanran challenges her right to interfere, then turns Xiao Long’s own arguments about honor and trustworthiness against him. Despite his rejection, she insists that she will discuss the choice of groom with her elders. Xiao Long interprets the proposal as retaliation for his public rebuke rather than genuine romantic interest 5.
Ge Ye apologizes and presents Xiao Yan with Qi Gathering Powder, which Xiao Long accepts on his brother’s behalf. Xiao Long announces that he will visit the Imperial Capital to settle the matter and declares that neither brother will marry Yanran. She answers that she intends to marry him anyway, then leaves with a smile and a sharp backward glance 5 6.
After her departure, the Xiao Clan’s First and Second Elders advocate accepting her proposal to preserve the clan’s dignity and secure influential connections; Xiao Long rejects the plan. Later, Xiao Lin anticipates that Nalan Jie will insist on honoring the old agreement. Xiao Long advises him to dismiss it as a joke if Nalan Jie raises the subject 6 17.

Personality
Yanran initially maintains a composed public manner, but becomes impatient when Ge Ye delays the engagement announcement. She openly scrutinizes Xiao Long and angrily defends her claim to act honorably when he condemns her. Although his sustained confrontation overwhelms her, she clearly states her objection to marrying an unfamiliar person 2 3 4.
Once she recovers her composure, Yanran becomes provocative and verbally resourceful. She repurposes Xiao Long’s moral arguments to place him in an uncomfortable position and persists despite his refusal. Xiao Long regards this as grudge-holding retaliation; her parting glare reinforces that the dispute remains personal and unresolved 5 6.
